Apparently it was a big ole Snapping Turtle. Actually never caught one before. I'd remember a tail like that. It was pretty heavy so I lowered it down and it crawled away on its own. It is a freshwater turtle so that may answer some questions. That second place was pretty crowded but twice as noisy as it should have been. Already busy looking for next weekends spot. Heading south again I think.
I like the Kimbuc landfill off in the distance most toxic back in the day...and for Keyport , at the beginning of the summer lead chunks were found at low tide in the bay...and where do crabs hang out..maybe on the bottom..and people eat these crabs...good luck
Living on the edge! Lol. Thankfully I don't crab northern areas much considering all the feedback, but I thought I should give some love to the viewers up there. Even though Edison was the closest spot I found from me I still prefer south areas.
@@ItAintMeBabe99 I gathered that while I was there. I didn’t have a plan C unfortunately, lol. But, these videos feature places more than my crabbing skills. Almost all the places I go I have no idea what they are like. So most of us are finding out at the same time. I’m sort of doing the “had I’ve know I never would have gone there” part as well as the “I’m 5 minutes from there and never knew it existed” part. 😁
Looks like crabbing is slowing down now. But what a big snapping turtle! Must be heavy lifting the trap. The crabbing and fishing dock at Keyport used to have more crabs at the end. But they only limit 4 traps per person. So nice to see the place again.😊
That turtle must have weighed at least 15 lbs, probably a lot more. I barely got it up when I thought this thing will Crack like an egg if it drops from here. so I gently lowered it down. it took a lot of coaxing but I eventually got it to walk away. That was a really cool catch. It looked so prehistoric with its spiky tail. But, that proved the place I was trying to crab was probably mostly freshwater. Oh well. Never know until you try and I left my SG gauge at home, lol. I don't remember it slowing down this early last year. I was still catching them in October if I remember correctly. Then again I guess it depends on water temperature. Does it pick up again for a short time before it completely dies out?
We chatted a couple weeks ago about me taking my girls to Avalon. We caught 1 keeper and by some miracle my 18 yr old pulled up a 19" keeper flounder. We went to the 80th and 81st bulkhead. No bathroom around fyi
I recently went to this spot two times. A lot of crabbing action, unfortunately they are all small. Caught 4 keepers in 4 hours. Looking for a different spot. Thank you for the video.
My guess is it's overcrabbed. Still a nice place but I prefer more shade and more quiet. So it's not for me but some people like places full of activity. Just watch some of those Florida pier fishing videos. That's just insane anarchy. Lol
Think you crab bad timing or bad area of Edison. But I heard from an area that I went 1 mile inland, from that area/water, that there's blue crabs. So I don't think it's the freshwater. As for Keyport, I caught 39 keeper male, like 8 yrs ago; all on my large kayak. I just kayak to the wood poles to the right and left, of where you were crabbing. I use my long wood stick with crab net, at the end. But this only possible if the water is near high tides and heading to low tides. If I decides to keep large females too, I would probably have like 60 crabs. Female tend to be smaller and softshell when you catch them bundle with male(while mating). Keyport is crowded as usual, so I tend to crab early morning. But now a days, I only fish for striper and fluke. BTW, recent news of slag used at Old Bridge inlet, have surface at Keyport beach. These slags are lead and toxic metal, I am sure lots of people question eating anything they catch. But Raritan Bay will always be my fishing ground.
Probably not a place I would usually go, even though it's the closest place to where I live. Not sure why but I prefer south Jersey. That being said I tasked myself with finding someplace further north that week and that's what I managed to find. I've been suggested a few places to go but I've only been to a couple and I think I'll avoid going to any more. I give out every place I go and there are people that like to keep their spots secret. I don't agree with keeping spots secret so now I only go to spots I found myself on Google maps.
Hey buddy now your in my old town keyport union Beach is where I'm from find the place called natko lake off Hwy 36 good crabing there keep up the great work your friend Mike from nj 👍
Nice footage Shot! That first location is usually in the news, due to high bacteria levels in the water. The 2nd spot Keyport gets allot of crabbing pressure. It's crabbing out! I Really like your traps. Can you include the link in your future vids. Thanks
Yea, that’s what I was thinking too about the docks. As for eating anything out of the river all I could find was a document on the Nj website that basically said it’s ok if you clean the crabs first and remove the “green gland”. Also it’s not recommended to eat it more than once a week or pregnant, nursing, etc. Same stuff as mercury in fish. So, eat at your own risk I guess. I wouldn’t recommend it. It also said it was from elevated PCB’s.

Billions of people crab Keyport, day and night. It’s a wonder that you caught even 2 keepers.

@@slingshotcrabbing Yes, we’ve experienced catching lots of crabs late in September, but by that time it’s mostly females.
There's a spot in near Edison that has a ton of crabs and big ones too. I caught a 7" there last week.
Thanks for the video. I went to Belmar Bay Harbor and caught 7 keepers thanks for sharing the locations
No problem 👍

Nice! Flounder fishing is pretty tough lately from what people have been saying. I still plan to to Avalon eventually.

Nice video, thanks. BTW, it’s Raritan, not Raritan. Just fyi.
that ramp in Edison is poorly maintained so I doubt they even care if you fish off the dock. Besides I wouldn't eat anything out of that water anyway.
