Secretariat did not race past the age of three. Handicap races don't start in the USA untiil the horses are four years old. 126 is the standard weight for three year olds. Phar Lap carried heavier and heavier weights the more he won. It's a damn shame that the closest Phar Lap got to racing in the USA was at Agua Caliente in Mexico. The Phar Lap story reminds me of the Seabiscuit story, except that Phar Lap was murdered. Phar Lap was a much larger racehorse, too.

No disrespect to the other great horses mentioned here. They WERE true greats. But Phar Lap wouldn't have eaten ANY of their dust, and would most certainly have beaten them ALL. He was truly one of a kind. He was described as a "freak". Well that freak was one hell of a runner, and he loved doing it.....

It’s amusing to read comments about Phar Lap, claiming he was the greatest horse of all time. What actual evidence do you present 1flaunt to make that statement? None. Well here's some: Secretariat never ran a 3200 metre race (the length of the Melbourne Cup, which Phar Lap won in 3:27 in 1930), but if he had, he would have bested that 1930 time by AT LEAST 8 seconds. The track record for the Melbourne is 3:16:30 set by Kingston Rule who was Secretariat’s son!! When Secretariat won the Belmont, he ran each furlong faster than the previous one. In other words, he was accelerating throughout the entire race! He won the Canadian International in 2:41, which is 2615 metres. To win the Melbourne, Secretariat would have to run 600 metres farther. Even if Secretariat had tired slightly and run this last 600 metres at 16 metres per second, his time would have been in the 3:17-3:18 range. Not as good as Kingston Rule, but close. In a hypothetical matchup at 3200 metres, Phar Lap would have lost to Secretariat by 25-30 lengths, no question. Sec would have DESTROYED Phar Lap at any distance.

@manikato75 Quote from Steve Haskins from Bloodhorse:
You have to remember, this is a horse who worked a mile for the Whitney in the mud in 1:34 4/5 after splits of :57 2/5, 1:09 1/5, and 1:21 3/5. His mile time was a track record at Saratoga, as was his 1 1/8-mile gallop-out in 1:47 4/5. The gallop-out time was a full second and two-fifths faster than the final time of the Whitney.
Now you tell me if there wasn't something wrong with him in the Whitney race?? Cont.

@schardy80 I will check out Black Caviar. Thanks so much for the tip Mate. A lot of horses can sprint mighty fast but most fall apart after the 1 mile pole or less. Secretariat ran a 3/8 workout just before he was a 3 yr. old in 32 3/5 seconds. For a big hoirse that is a little slow out of the gate that is damm fast. Ran 5 panels in a blow out running the 4th panel in 10 1/5 seconds. Those blow outs were not at his maxium speed.

@manikato75 , As Secretariat raced through the Belmont stretch, running as fast as a horse can run, making the back of Turcotte's jacket billow. Snapping the watch as the horse crossed the wire, Lucien cried, "Oh, my god! He went 33 and three fifths!" Horses rarely break 34 seconds going three eighths. Laurin looked ashen. Moments later he was telephoning the clocker, Jules Watson, in his aerie high above the track.Cont.

@RuffianQueenOfRacing I will educate you some more on Secretariat in which you have no idea how fast this horse was. On March 17, 1973 he ran a 3/8 mile workout in 33 3/5 seconds a WR at the time. One of those quarters was done in 21 1/5 seconds only 2/5ths off the record. July 28th, 1973 ran a workout in "MUD'. Fractions were 45 2/5, 1:09 1/5, 1:21 3/5 and 1:34 flat for the mile. Phar Lap never could approach that mile time on grass. Secretariat just did it in a workout in 'MUD'. Grasp that.

Nack said if Secretariat didn't take the long route his time would have been 1:59 flat. He covered more ground. That would have been a 1:58 flat 1/5 slower than The Bid But Big Red was clocked in 1:57 4/5 'Pulling Up' in his M.C. race and that track was not so fast according to SI Whitney Tower who was there & explain the track conditions.

Was one race so compelling? Phar Lap set a track record, but Caliente was only two years old. His time stood for only one year, eclipsed by a long-forgotten successor. His competition was middling. Ever heard of his runner-up, Reveille Boy? Neither has anyone else. Phar Lap was never tested in American racing.

Almost 30 years later I can still see Laurin on that early morning of March 14 at Belmont Park, when he hoisted jockey Ron Turcotte aboard Secretariat for the colt's final three-eighths-of-a-mile workout leading up to his first race in that magical Triple Crown season. "Let him roll, Ronnie," Laurin said. A few minutes later there was Laurin, draped on the rail with stopwatch in hand.

Secretariat was the only horse probably in history that set records 'Pulling Up' & some were done in his workouts which were not all out except his 3/8 mile workout when Laurin told Ronnie to let him roll. A week before the Whitney race he ran a 1 mile workout in 'MUD' in 1:34 4/5 which was a record & 'Gallop Out' another furlong in 1:47 4/5. And that was a record.

In the Dwyer race he had to run flat out to win -- but, he won. JPG wasn't a scrub, he was the consensus runner up for horse of the year behind MOW. But that was the only race he was ever extended.

There also is some question to some of the Beyers for Easy Goer. For instance, in Ray Paulick's book, he has Easy Goer's Belmont at 126. He also has Easy Goer's Whitney at 122, Travers at 124, Suburban at 122,Classic at 124, even his SLOW Jockey Club Gold Cup at 122 because the track was extremely slow. Sounds to me like EG beyered these amazing beyers on SLOW tracks and fast tracks. "While the tracks were fast, they were NOT freaky, souped up.Easy Goer ran faster than Slew,Aff,Bid at 2,3."

@schardy80 That 1:47 4/5 was over a second faster than the race itself. It is well known he had a fever plus Whitney Tower quoted he ran the rail which was 'Doubly' deep.Steve Haskins said he was 'Totally' not prepared for the Woodward. Did not train for that race. Had a 'Abcess' in the Wood. If you seen his maiden race its easy to see why he lost & then there was the disquailfication. You can call them exuses, explanaions or whatever. I guess its up to you to believe it or not. Cont.

@PoulnabroneModesty There was also a movie made about Phar Lap (I think it was late 1970's or so). Get a copy if you can....his story is also incredible.

@rscarbro100 I am having fun too! Where are you from??...Well consistent, I think he was? Why you ask? In his "bad races",EG got beat by two lengths&a little over a length, both over a peanut buttery Churchill track(I think his trainer said he hated one track,Churchill Downs only),&his one other "bad race" was in the Met Mile where Ray Paulick wrote in his book that EG was "lame for the Met Mile race". Easy Goer ran the other 17 of his 20 races brilliantly,14 brilliant wins, losses by nose, neck

@rscarbro100 Also even if Bill Finley said the track was also very fast, he also wrote, "In an effort so BRILLIANT, it will never be forgotten by any who witnessed it,Easy Goer WENT BEYOND MERE BRILLIANCE, one fifth of a second off Dr. Fager's world record. Easy Goer did it SO EFFORTLESSLY that he appeared capable of running FAR FASTER(which he did), a startling thought considering he is in his second start as a three year old& well away from his prime." Ran 9f gallop out in 1:45.4 also

@schardy80 I don't know how you can come to the conclusion Phar Lap was the 5th best horse Australian /NZ produced. To say he didn't beat much shows what little research you have done. I'm from a 3rd generation racing family and can say without doubt he was not only a true champion but the greatest horse this country has ever seen. Why? Because he beat very good horses. Horses that if he wasn't around they would've been champions. Amounis & Nightmarch just to name a few. He was a freak!

@EASYGOER4LIFE My mistake my good man but he was hit 8 times in the Belmont not six. Blow the screen up full size & look real close. Besides I believe it was Steve Haskins that said a jockey need not to hit his horse more than 7 times to get him to his Max. speed. and will try to find that article.

@rscarbro100 You yourself have called some of Day's rides(plural) on Easy Goer very bad, mainly in the Preakness and Classic by a nostril and desperate neck. No doubt that S.S deserves A LOT of credit for being another great horse who could take full advantage, even if the margins were by a nostril in 1:53.4 and neck in Classic. There were many experts who stated the obvious about Day's riding-Joe Drape's book,Edwin Pope,Bill Christine,Paul Moran,Crist, etc.

@rscarbro100 Here is the quote posted by Christine sounds of silence. "Pat and I agree that he made riding mistakes in the Preakness," McGaughey said. "But in the other races, there were circumstances that contributed to what happened."
There were two points in the Classic that hurt Easy Goer, McGaughey said. The horse tried to lug in shortly after the start and had trouble negotiating the far turn, when Easy Goer was trying to cut into Sunday Silence's lead. End of quote

@RuffianQueenOfRacing The 82-page notebook, which belonged to Phar Lap's trainer Harry Telford, provides the first written proof of the tonics and ointments he used on racehorses.
Twenty-eight of the homeopathic recipes in the notebook were written in Telford's hand, with two others added by his track-work jockey, Ernie Fellows, auctioneer Charles Leski of Charles Leski Auctions in Melbourne said. Cont.

@SvendBosanvovski ] Wikipedia: A horse’s skeletal system adapts to the exercise they are receiving. Because the skeletal system does not reach full maturity until the horse is at least four years of age, young racehorses often suffer multiple injuries. A horse at 5 is at his peak not a aged horse. Some horses reach maturity at 4 and some 5 yrs. of age. So Phar Lap was not a aged horse when he ran at Agua. Larger fields you run slower times. Smaller fields you run faster times. Cont.

@rscarbro100 LOL! You yourself have called Day's riding awful. Baby hands is specifically this: Read Joe Drape's book,"Race for the Triple Crown", and he describes Day's riding as "deliberate, passive," Day calls his own riding on Easy Goer "absolute rider error".Day also used his start and stop, start and stop, start and stop,"I gave him breathers around the far turn in both races."Funny, Crist also said EG had legitamite excuse in the Derby(a track he spun his wheels over) and Preakness(bad ride)

@manikato75 I know all about Phar Lap. He ran many races carring scale weight & never came close to running the times Secretariat ran nor MOW. He was only carring 129 lbs. when he set a record in Mexico in his last race. The very next year a unheard of horse broke that record easy. The cracked hoof did not hurt hm a bit. When he did not have a cracked hoof his times were slower. It just don't add up. Most experts have him 22nd best. I believe.

@schardy80 All the experts say the Belmont was the most out of this world performace by any race horse in history. The record was broken by 2 3/5 seconds. The Dr. broke his by only 2/5 of a second. The Dr. was truly a 'Super' horse himself & would be more than a challenge for Secretariat in a mile race But my money is on Big Red. He ran a 3/8 mile workout before he was 3 yrs. old in 32 3/5 seconds. The experts would just shake their heads in disbelief.

And here is the quote by Eddie as he told Ron Turcotte when he wrote a letter to his fans at why he thought Secretariat deserves to be chosen as Horse of the Century, Quote:
He would always say: "That Big Red "so and so" you rode was the
best no ifs or buts about it!"

@RuffianQueenOfRacing Daily Racing Forum private clockers clocked Secretariat. Sure some of them are unoffical but just bercasue that was not the distance of the race. But we know he did run that fast. DRF has proof beyond a doubt that no one can deny. I know of the slow times Phar Lap ran on grass carrying 138 lbs in 3:27 4/5 time, Kelso carried 136 lbs and ran in 2:23 4/5 on grass for the 1 1/2 mile. Give him 15 seconds for each furlong and his time would have been 3:23 4/5 for 2 miles.

  • @rscarbro100
    @rscarbro100 13 ปีที่แล้ว

@RuffianQueenOfRacing In the Marlboro Cup Secretariat carried 124 lbs. Riva Ridge carried 126. Daily Racing Forum said Secretariat was 7 lbs better. Ran a time in 1:57 4/5 pulling up at the 1 1/4 post. 9 lbs is the correct weight for age difference. It is easy to see Secretariat could have carried 136 lbs and beat Phar Lap at any distance with Phar Lap carrying only 129 lbs.
