    I LOVE Zenyatta, Seattle Slew, Ruffian, Affirmed, Allydar- all of them!! That 1973 Belmont will never be beaten- it is, without any doubt, THE greatest athletic performance, by man or beast, in the history of the planet- the greatest athletic achievement bar none and will stand for eternity- to think differently is to be a f-0-0-l!

      Absolutely! I watched that race live with my Dad because of all the hooplah surrounding the media as otherwise we never woulda watched it because we weren't into horses or racing. Tell you what I teared up. Anderson was right that record will NEVER BE BEATEN. there are a few others that will PROBABLY never be beaten as well... Roses all time hit record and Bonds walk AND HR records. Although they do play more games now. Ty Cobbs lifetime BA is another one. But Secretariat's 2:24 in the Belmont? NO WAY! No horse has come within 16 LENGTHS of that record in 50 YEARS! And some of the wins since he would have beaten the winner by 50 LENGTHS! Some other tidbits about that race. Every 1/4 mile was FASTER than the previous one meaning he was still ACCELERATING when he crossed the finish line! And Turcotte never touched him with the whip. Absolutely UNREAL! Another thing that blew me away was Secretariats incredible acceleration in the Preakness on that first term. I noticed it before Anderson did because I was only watching Secretariat. When I saw that I could not believe it. They'll NEVER be another Secretariat, folks.

      I always thought that Tiger Woods’s 2000 US Open was the most dominant performance I had ever seen by man or beast. But after gaining the knowledge of Secretariat’s performance and watching it for myself, I think I have to tip the hat to Secretariat. It may be because I’m an animal lover, but no matter the reason I still feel how I feel. Tiger Woods didn’t just make the golf world look like fools, he revolutionized the game itself in just one tournament, but that was nearly expected at some point in his career. What Secretariat did on that day and how he and his rider did it, were earth shattering and mind blowing to EVERY single person in the world of horse racing. It wasn’t supposed to happen, so it gets the little nudge it needs to top Tiger’s 2000 US Open.

      Gotta agree with the crowd: Secretariat by a country mile.
      Zenyatta was good--as were Citation, Cigar, Forego, and numerous others. But Ruffian was extraordinary--she equaled or broke the track or stakes record every time out except one; well, and the one she didn't finish. And in almost all of those races she was under restraint--Jacinto was under orders NOT to let her run as fast as she could.
      Ruffian was more like 16.3hh, by the way--she was huge. Her girth as a two-year-old was bigger than Secretariat's.
      No secret, I love all great fillies--I'm a girl, lol! But Secretariat stands alone. He was a stone-cold freak of nature, and no horse will ever best him, not in a million years.

Not only did she win the Breeder's Cup Classic, but she went undefeated for 19 races and placed for her last and only loss. She ran 2nd. She was beat mearly by a head. She went out there and beat the boys in the Super Bowl of racing. She's a star!

      Arianne Winkler: Zenyatta is definitely, IMHO, the second-best filly/mare ever. Ruffian, though, is THE best by far. She was poetry in motion, and she was almost always under restraint when she ran--her trainer was afraid to let her run wide open. Who knows what she could have accomplished had she not destroyed her leg in the match?

    Secretariat.
    HE WAS AMAZING.
    Sure, Zenyatta is cool. She only broke one record. Secretariat broke lots.
    He sired over 900 foals, and only a few of them were successful (this includes American Pharaoh). He ran at a speed of 48mph and won the Triple Crown. His heart weighed 10kg. He retired when he was only 3 years old.
    His owners had to hand graze him as they were afraid he would run again. To be honest, I feel sorry for all the racehorses who went up against Big Red... especially Sham. He would've made a great racing legend (well, he is one) and would've set many records but he went against Big Red and lost 🤷‍♀️.
    In conclusion, Secretariat would've crushed Zenyatta if they raced against each other.

      @johnhebert3986 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ Gerry Thompson Is there something in my comments, that would lead you to believe that I thought Sham, was a better, or faster horse than Secretariat.? Once again, IMO Sham would have been the Triple Crown Winner in 73 if not for Secretariat, which obviously makes Secretariat the better horse. IMO the reason Sham finished last in the Belmont, was because he just had 2 very tough races, against and opponent, he couldn't beat. He then went head to head with Secretariat, in the Belmont, running a 1/2 mile in 46 1/5th, before he hit a brick wall. It was discovered afterwords, that Sham had suffered, a hairline fracture in his cannon bone. Now one can speculate, as to the reason why this happened, but IMO there is a good possibility, it could have been caused, by trying and failing, to keep up with a once in a generation horse. So I would ask myself a couple of questions. Had Secretariat, not been involved, in the 73 Triple Crown, would Sham have had to run as hard, to beat the the rest of the competition.? Also, is there the possibility, he wouldn't have broken down, if he didn't have to go throat to throat, in blazing fractions, against the best of all times.?

      @elainepowell4654 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Secretariat eventually sired a number of major stakes winners, including:
      General Assembly, winner of the 1979 Travers Stakes, setting a track record of 2:00 flat that stood for 37 years.[103] [104]
      Lady's Secret, 1986 Horse of the Year.[105]
      Risen Star, 1988 Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner.[106]
      Kingston Rule, 1990 Melbourne Cup winner, breaking the course record.[107]
      Tinners Way, born in 1990 to Secretariat's last crop, winner of the 1994 and 1995 Pacific Classic.[108]
      Ultimately, Secretariat officially sired 663 named foals, including 341 winners (51.4%) and 54 stakes winners (8.1%).[109] There has been some criticism of Secretariat as a stallion, mainly because he did not produce male offspring of his own ability and did not leave a leading sire son behind, but his legacy is assured through the quality of his daughters, several of whom were excellent racers and even more of whom were excellent producers. In 1992, Secretariat was the leading broodmare sire in North America. Overall, Secretariat's daughters produced 24 Grade/Group 1 winners. As a broodmare sire, Secretariat's most notable progeny were:
      Weekend Surprise, a stakes winner and the 1992 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. Her sons include 1990 Preakness winner Summer Squall and 1992 Horse of the Year A.P. Indy.[110]
      Terlingua, a stakes winner and dam of leading sire Storm Cat.[111]
      Secrettame, a stakes winner and dam of important sire Gone West, whose descendants include Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones.[112]
      Six Crowns, dam of champion two-year-old and sire Chief's Crown.[113]
      Sister Dot, dam of champion two-year-old and sire Dehere.[114]
      Celtic Assembly, dam of Volksraad, leading sire in New Zealand.[115]
      Betty's Secret, dam of Secreto, winner of The Derby, and Istabraq, three-time winner of the Champion Hurdle.[116]
      Through Weekend Surprise and Terlingua alone, Secretariat appears in the pedigree of numerous champions. Weekend Surprises's son A.P. Indy was the leading sire in North America in 2003 and 2006, and is the sire of 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft and 2007 Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches. He has also established a successful sire-line that leads to Kentucky Derby winners Orb and California Chrome.[117] A.P. Indy's leading sire-line descendant is Tapit, who led the sire list in 2014-2015 and is the sire of Belmont Stakes winners Tonalist and Creator.[118] Terlingua's son Storm Cat is also a two time leading sire, whose offspring include Giant's Causeway, three-time leading sire in North America.[119] Storm Cat also sired Yankee Gentleman, who is the broodmare sire of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.[120] Both Storm Cat and A.P. Indy appear in the pedigree of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify.[121]
      Inbreeding to Secretariat has also proven successful, as exemplified by numerous graded stakes winners, including two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan, as well as sprint champion Speightstown.[122]
      Secretariat's paddock at Claiborne Farm bordered three other stallions: Drone, Sir Ivor, and Hall of Fame inductee Spectacular Bid. Secretariat did not pay much attention to Drone or Sir Ivor, but he and Spectacular Bid became friendly and occasionally raced each other along the fence line between their paddocks.[123] [124]

      A tad harsh, don't you think.? Its true Secretariat, didn't live up to expectations as a sire, but those expectations, were set way high. He did turn out, to be a decent broodmare sire. Also, it isn't just one race, the Belmont, that made Secretariat the greatest, race horse. He also ran the fastest Derby, which still stands today, and broke the track record in the Preakness. He also set the world record for 1 1/8 miles, in the Marlboro Cup, against older horses, 3 of which were, eclipse award winners. He also broke the track record, for his 1st start on the turf, in the Man O' War Stakes. running the 1 1/2 mile distance in 2:24 4/5ths. So while the 73 Belmont, may have been the most sensational performance, ever run by a race horse, it is more of Secretariats body of work, on the track that made him the greatest, IMO.

      What your missing is that things changed after the Ruffian disaster! Throw out ANY race time record before Ruffian! When she broke down in a match race in NY on national TV in 1975 there was a HUGE outcry in the country!! Why? Because U.S. racetracks were groomed to be lighting fast by reducing the cushion or depth of the surfaces!! The number of injuries and deaths was deemed to be a cruel treatment of the horses. Even veteran writers had to agree that the emphasis on times was manufactured by altering the surfaces! (Also note the contested race time of Red's Preakness win!!) Owners and trainers were in agreement! Much of this was kept out of the press to maintain the image and high interest in the sport!! There were also concerns about racing on frozen tracks (many track records were set on frozen surfaces)and at the time many race cards were cancelled in the northeast for years! So your comment about "faster tracks now" is TOTALLY inaccurate, in fact it's just the opposite!! In 21 starts W-16 P-3 S-1 career winnings $1,316, 900!! He was sent to stud where he turned out to be a failure and even the owners regretted not continuing with racing! IF you want to see one of the real champions of all time then google KELSO 63 starts(3 times the number of starts by Red and over twice the number of wins (39) W-39 P-12 S-2 and $1,977, 900 from purses, a full 10 years before Big Red!!!! Raced until 9 years of age!! Won 6 of 8 races at age 8!! 5 time horse of the year the next closest is 3 and Red is 2!! Carried weights of 136 pounds and spotted rivals as much as 18 pounds! Red never carried more than 126! Kelly set 9 track records. STILL owns the record for 2 miles on dirt!! Set an american record for 1.5 miles on the TURF!! Red was maybe the best 3 year old of all time maybe even of the seventies but NOT the best "RACE" horse of ALL time NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!! ALL distances, ALL tracks, ALL weights, ALL earnings, ALL wins, ALL surfaces Kelso was at the top of ALL TIME!!!!

He brought the whole nation together in those very difficult times.He was a true hero back then and still is.Most famous quote in history of horseracing...So long,Charley by Red Pollard 😄😄

    @balerick48, Secretariat was not on steroids! I have done extensive reading on anabolic steroids or long acting, and short acting steroids. There is no scientific proof that steroids make a horse go faster! In fact, the short term steroid will make a horse go nuts and try to kill a human! After the Belmont, Secretariat looked pretty docile to me, which was his normal personality! Seriously people, before you accuse, read! He was beautiful, smart, well bred, fast and durable!

      Well I train athletes for a living and I can say none of what u said makes any sense. Ok for starters the combination which was favored heavily in the 70s was winstrol v and equipose. Equipose was longer acting "5 days" between administrations. Equipose would increase protein synthesis building muscle much faster, allowing recovery from training in hours not days. Winstrol was short acting given everyday to every other day. Winstrol helped with explosive strength and performance. Both steroids are favored in the racing industry for 1 critical reason. They cause no water retention and will actually reduce any subcutaneous water issues the horse may have. Steroids don't just make humans and horse's go faster lol. Steroids will have that effect on any lifeforms there administered to.

    • @chrissuponcic5181
      @chrissuponcic5181 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You said short term steroids would make a horse go nuts. I'm not sure where your getting this information. There are two types of steroids androgenic and anabolic. Androgenic mimics all the strong male characteristics of the testosterone naturally produced by a man. Characteristics like aggression, strength, virility etc..
      Anabolic steroids were designed to have the muscle building and performance enhancing effects of testosterone without the side effects (mood swings, aggression, hair loss, acne etc). Horses are given strictly anabolic steroids to aid in their performance. Androgenic steroids are used mostly by human athletes who want to gain size and don't mind the water retention associated with heavy androgenic compounds

      @@bruno_dias I am not discrediting Secretariat's accomplishments. the discussion was who was the greatest horse of all time. Most people are unaware that Secretariat lost 2 of his next 4 races after the Belmont. Also, he was retired at the age of 3, and never took on a campaign or a season against older horses. The Triple Crown is limited to 3 year olds. I do believe he ran the best race of all time in the Belmont, but that does not mean he proved to be the best horse of all time. i think that distinction belongs to a horse that raced for a few years, and was a consistent Grade 1 winner on turf and on dirt, won at different distances, and won at different tracks. A durable horse that stood the test of time. Frankly, I am not sure we will ever know who that is, and in my opinion Secretariat's resume falls a bit short in that regard. i appreciate the conversation.

    In the mile 1/2 Belmont he ran the first 6 furlongs in 109 and 2, ( fastest 2/3 of a mile) and the race in 2.40. Opening down the stretch. I saw it live. It was breathtaking. When witnesses say ," people were crying," as he finished the race, it was hundreds and maybe thousands. Overwhelmed!
    When my kids said they were going to see the movie I told them," no matter the film craft, direction or special effects, and music, it could only fail to recapture the moment.

The immortal Ruffian won every race she ran in with the exception of her match race against Foolish Pleasure where she broke down. Personal Ensign was also an undefeated filly who beat the boys and what about Rachel Alexander who won the Oaks, Preakness, Haskell and Woodward. The Beyer Speed Figure is a system for rating the performance of thoroughbred racehorses in North America designed in the early 1970s by Andrew Beyer, the syndicated horse racing columnist for The Washington Post. Beyer retrospectively rated Secretariat's 1973 Belmont performance at 139, the highest rating he ever awarded. In comparison, the last two Triple Crown winners recorded Beyers of 105 (American Pharoah) and 101 (Justify) in their Belmont wins. Secretariat was simply jaw-dropping fast, the best ever.

      great comments one and all, but the great thing about these races is that they are all timed. While I understand that not all of these horses run in the same countries, let alone the same races, there is only one horse who has run the Kentucky Derby in under 2 minutes, and it is the same horse that set the record in the Preakness and the Belmont. The Belmont record is a full 2 seconds faster than the next fastest horse. Secretariat did lose some races, once he clearly was sick, the others were probably due to poor handling. But in terms of the fastest horse that has ever been clocked at these races, secretariat is without a doubt the fastest racehorse. If you think otherwise, look it up. The final thing I will add is that there is good evidence, when looking at Kentucky Derby times, that breeding has gradually, but almost certainly, resulted in a limit to the speed a thoroughbred can run. Secretariat's success was probably due to a genetic mutation passed to him through his maternal line with variable penetrance. His offspring did not have it. Steroids and drugs did not give him his cardiovascular changes. But they died with him. The subsequent winners' times are all close but not below 2 minutes.

    How could Secretariat be sterile if he sired some 600 horses? It is said that great racehorses rarely duplicate themselves. A breeder said he was not a disappointment as a stud. He was also a virgin until age 3, when he was retired from racing and became a stud. 🏇

      @@meritz59 "He [Secretariat] sired some very good, though not great horses."
      *Secretariat sired one unquestionably great horse, Hall of Famer and 1986 Horse of the Year Lady's Secret.* She's not in the running for greatest U.S. mare of all time; not in a class with Zenyatta, Busher, Ruffian, Gallorette or Personal Ensign, for example. But Lady's Secret (45:25-9-3, with 22 stakes wins) was a slam dunk Hall of Famer who was elected in her first year of eligibility. A panel of seven experts ranked her #76 in Blood Horse's 1999 (mistitled) "Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century," and I think she deserved to be a bit higher. (The Blood Horse book is misnamed, it's really a list of Thoroughbreds who ran on the flat in the 20th C. with at least one start in North America.)
      It's possible Secretariat son Risen Star (11:8-2-1), champion 3-yr-old male in 1988 and winner of the Preakness and Belmont, would have turned out to be a great horse if he had not been injured in the Belmont and subsequently retired. And as you allude to, Secretariat sired some other very good racers.

      @johnhebert3986 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ Johnathan Hunt. I think it is possible to know for sure. You are correct, about both times. Secretariat's time was just about 5 seconds faster, than Man O' Wars. Also, what most Fan's don't realize is, Secretariat, carried 126 lbs, as opposed to Man O' Wars 118 lbs. Also, Man O' Wars time for 1 1/2 miles, came in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, not the Belmont. The Belmont was run @ 1 3/8 miles in 1920. As I have mentioned in previous comments, if 1 second equals 5 lengths, on a flat dirt oval racing service, given both horses times, that means that Secretariat, would have beaten Man O' War by about 25 lengths. Sounds ridiculous right.? But the clock, doesn't lie. Give Man O' War 3 seconds, for steel shoes, and a lesser race track, and that's being generous, Secretariat, still wins by 10 lengths.

      @ Lain Iwakura I don't think anyone, can question, how fast Dr. Fager was. I believe, he still holds the world record, for 1 mile 1:32 1/5th, set in 1968. And, for whatever reason, he was faster @ 1/1/4 miles, than he was @ 1/1/8 miles, when you compare the times, for both distances. I will say this, Dr Fager, was the faster horse up to 1 1/16th. I will take Secretariat, @ 1 1/8th and beyond. But 3 of Dr Fager's, 1 1/4 mile times, are right there with Secretariat. Here are his times: 1:59 4/5ths, 1:59 3/5ths, and 1:59 1/5th, a race he finished 1st in, but was disqualified, and placed 4th. Secretariat: @ 1:1/4. 1:59: 2/5ths, Derby. 1:59 flat, in the Belmont Stakes. 1:57 4/5ths, clocked, while galloping out the extra furlong distance, after setting a world record for 1 1/8th, 1:45 2/5ths. Dr Fager was ranked as the 6th greatest U.S. racehorse, of the 20th Century, by Blood Horse magazine.

    I have been watching racing for more than fifty years and usually the locals pick their favorite horse as the all time best , for me all you can reasonably do is declare your favorite "one of the Greats " and leave it at that . Otherwise you just kid yourself because we will never know and in any case a horses performance is dependent on many things such as distance and going and can vary greatly from one race to the next . Therefore I declare that Mr. Ed was probably the greatest .
