lovely fella.. met him the day after the skids had played liverpool rotters, 1980 ( he'd stayed over to catch the ramones play the same club the next day) very approachable and chatty... we ended sharing a jazz cigarette and ended up talking, at great length, about hawkwind! much to his girlfriend (or wife's) disdain that once on the subject of them he'd never shut up (which was true!).. haha... anyways.. a couple of years later big country played the warehouse in liverpool (first uk tour and an incredible gig)... so anyways, after the gig as i walked past the dressing room (next to the stage) the door was open and a shout of hey! hawkwind!!! roared from out of the room.. i was beckoned inside, met the band etc.. still to this day i can't get over how he'd remembered our initial encounter.. as i said before a lovely fella

I live in PA. I am 58. I was there watching MTV from their second video( I think)..Pat Benatar... on Aug 1981.
I saw Big Country one rainy day in the early 80s on MTV. Wow! The singing, the bass, the fun....the drums. I would become an instant fan. I still am.
Rock music that I still hold dear and that touches my soul like no other include Big Country, Simple Minds, Marillion(w/Fish), Fish, Yes, Nick Drake, Rush, The Smithereens....
    I am sorry Stuart.

Living and studying in Edinburgh at the time I was fortunate enough to see Big Country live through the mid 80s and early 90s. As a band they were a force of nature - to this day I can't really think of a live act that has topped them - they could turn a venue into a heaving, bouncing, joyous mob as soo as they started playing. At the heart of it all was Stuart such a great front man and musician who always seemed grounded and humble. Sadly missed by many people.

Like many on here, I first learned of Big Country from their appearances on MTV. . .back when MTV actually played MUSIC videos. I was immediately enamored of their sound.
Being one half Scot, hearing those guitars sounding like bagpipes on "In a Big Country" was indeed special. The song just stuck with you. Of course, the accompanying video got as much air play as the song on radio., I went out and bought The Crossing on vinyl which i still have to this day. Great songs on that album. One of the most underrated was/is "Poorohman" which features the dueling guitars of Stuart and Bruce at the intro. That band was so tight. With Tony on bass and "Bree zee" on the riser, they had a unique sound. I was able to see them at the Excelsior Mill in Atlanta.
i expected to see a comment here on a song I really like -- "Fragile Thing". A deeply emotional song that served as a harbinger of future tragedy for Stuart. In the video he's sitting alone in a restaurant lamenting a lost relationship which is doubly ironic due to Stuart's life at the time. The song's message wasn't lost on those who knew him. Somehow he wound up in a Hawaii motel alone with too much alcohol and his personal demons. They got the best of his willpower. Still, I was a bit shocked and saddened to learn of Stuart Adamson's passing especially the way he took himself out. Depression is a emotional roller coaster. I still enjoy listening to Big Country. Stuart Adamson lost his life but he left his mark.

I met a great guy from Dunfermline around 2008 in Langkawi.
An island of the coast of Malaysia. I couldn't believe it when he told me about Stuarts drinking.
It was really really sad to hear about such a talented guy who wrote and played amazing guitar.
The Skids 'Into the Valley' what a tune . I remember him telling me what that song was about being a local lad. Great tune and fantastic lyrics.

Amazing comments below to reflect the genius that was Stuart and his passion. That Big Country blossomed in the eighties when punk had been displaced by a genre that was more about presentation than music is telling. The sound was so distinctive and perhaps that was their undoing after 5 or 6 big years. They were almost the only band I listened to of this era. They kept rock music alive in a difficult time. Nothing lasts forever and it underlies the fact that even the most talented folk need help in moving their careers forward in new ways. I was at the memorial event at Barrowlands, quite something, the musicians that played, the atmosphere, but still a sad occasion. Stuart Adamson, perhaps Scotland's finest musical son!! Time for a reunion but not simply trying to recreate that unique sound and presence?

The thunderous intro of Into The Valley, remains one of the 'most compelling of all time'!! The Skids were a glorious hybrid of machismo and intellectualism. In addition i met Stuart and his politeness was inspiring! He really was the embodiment of professionalism!!

I was lucky enough to catch Big Country at the Hultsfreds rock festival, Sweden in 1988 and it was an incredible gig for sure. Joe Strummer also performed at the same festival and it was great to catch so many musical heroes at the same time!

Flew to England in 1998 to see them play at a small community center in the northern lake district region. Met the boys backstage after the show. So glad I did!

Big Country could’ve been like U2, if it wasn’t for the passing of Stuart so soon! Great Band! They were among my favorite bands growing up, U2, Big Country, The Alarm, Simple Minds, The Smiths, the Water boys , Joy Division, Depeche Mode etc..
