Hi Claire, I really love your floral fabric and I have seen zips put in far worse than you did! You just went off a bit at the top. I admire your determination and I think you are an inspiration. Also appreciate your theme! I hope you are doing well health wise.
I am so proud of you, and impressed! I've sewn for decades and the closest I've ever come is sewing elastic waist pants! I've never even done a proper zipped skirt! Amazing how many things one can make without having done those! 😆 I love your accepting attitude, both toward body size and sewing! I get so wrapped up in trying to sew things perfectly that I'm often paralyzed! Thank you for the sweet, honest review and the encouragement! You should be very pleased with your results! 💕
So glad I found your videos! I enjoy your dry sense of humor. Thank you for your honesty and you inspire me to try more things for plus size wear, too.
Love your video as it's so honest. I always put zips in before I put waistbands on and have an overlap with button and button hole. Try applying a soft interfacing to your waistband. That would stop most of the twisting.
Hi Rosyclaire, thank you. I have done waistbands that way but prefer these ones. I forgot to mention but it did add a light interfacing. Thanks for your support xx
Congrats on your first pair. It is the start of your journey. Many years ago did a college course on trousers. drafted a pair looked good front and back , teacher was impressed even though I complained I could not walk or sit down, got the top grade, never completed year 2. Drafted a pair almost 2 decade later and many mockups for a blueprint, Burda offers a good point to start from, for plus size trousers patterns, quite close to my blueprint lots of depth in the crotch for your bum. Good luck.
Thanks Audrey. I've definitely tipped my toes in and no going back now ha ha! Yours is an interesting story! Thanks for the heads up burda I will bear that in mind! Thanks again x
Yay!! Well done you. I know you said that you don't feel confident in them but they looked really good on you, quite flattering in your twirl. Thank you for being you and providing a truly honest recap of your sewing adventure with these. You have inspired me to try the pattern out :)
They look great on you! I have not made trousers yet. I have been sewing for only 2 years and I too have heard from so many that fitting them is a challenge. I’m short 5 ft 2”. Pear shape. So I know I will have to make fitting adjustments.
Thank you Christine. Maybe start with something simple like leggings or palazzo pants? Or even pyjamas as it wont matter if they dont fit perfectly as no one sees them...
Thanks Sue! I think it's so important to be honest so viewers dont get a false sense of my experience. Thanks re hair.. I caved and straightened it. I feel so much more put together and confident when I do! X
Hi Claire - well done on cracking through the trouser wall! I love the fabric you have used! I am just about to give trousers a go. I am going to start with the Derwent trousers from the Wendy Ward Knits book made from a ponti - they look a bit easier as they are glorified leggings lol! After that I am going to make the Sew House Seven Free Range Slacks in linen. From the sublime to the ridiculous I knowHahaha! Got both cut out but thought I would start with the knit one first to get a bit of confidence 😁😁👍❤️
I’ve sewn clothing since I was in high school (1972-1977). I’ve never really been “put off” sewing trousers (we call them pants), I just got lazy and wanted to branch out a bit! I have the Helen’s Closet pattern and am looking forward to getting to it! I’ve recently ruined a Rebecca Page dress (I still can’t talk about it) so I’ve shifted to quilt making for a little while. I’ve read over the “hacks” on Helen’s website and want to make some changes to the pattern. I want an elastic waist and no zipper and slash pockets. There is a TH-camr named Thuy and she has several different pages where she shows different ways to sew things. She’s very talented! She has a video on how to make your own patterns! I realize I haven’t said anything helpful but I’m excited that you were brave enough to branch out and stretch your seamstress wings! You go girl!
Love this hair color on you, it shows your eye color much more than the black. Probably more dificult to style with clothes, but looks amazing on you🥰 Just Saw it goes well with all kinds of green 😅
Congratulations, they look lovely on you! I’ve made lots and lots of pants and shorts for me and my kids over the years and my mom most recently. Really though, not for myself in the last few years, (since I developed a belly) but just last week I bought a new pattern. So that’s my new project.
I've made Pj bottoms for my kid, husband, and I've made the Harlow pjs from Gertie, and it was easy. I made a jumpsuit from Fibre mood, the first one I made was farrrr too small...so Yes about the sizing, I understand! The second one I made I couldn't sit down cos then the neck line came up so high, I just slashed into the neckline and made it a v, but I've not had the courage to wear if yet as I made it from a bedsheet and I think the fabric is too thin for my lunps and bumps. I've just bought the culottes and looking forward to making them. Helen seems so approachable on social media that I think you are right when you talk about her helping understand your body and she cares that you really understand the instructions
Your pant look great n you look great wearing them... congratulations you did it n helped me to feel brave enough to start looking to make my own... fabric n pattern here I come... lol... Thank You for all your time n efforts to give us watching confidence to follow in your footsteps...
It's always good to try and sew up something just for the experience of it lol. I always have struggles w the zip, 1 time I sewed a sec backwards idk how 😂. I cut a waistband on the bias and had a feeling it was going to warp so I cheated and added interfacing & 🤞, it worked lol
I’m pretty new to sewing my dream pair of pants is the Ginger jeans but that’s way above my skill level right now. I do think I could if not now at least eventually figure these out. I’ve got a coupon I really should just buy these. The rest of her patterns can kind of wait I think until I’ve figured my style out a little more. The low crotch is something. I haven’t thought of cause the thigh rub is an issue and is my main reason for not wearing skirts and dresses more. It’s why I love my jeans so much. ❤️🌻
Oh that satin crepe is gorgeous!! Congrats on your new pants - a hard won victory and now the fear factor is banished!! I thought your invisible zip in the black pair looked so good. I am STILL avoiding invisible zips, I constantly default to conventional. But I said 2019 would be my year - so I have to conquer this. It’s interesting that sewing truly can intimidate us in ways, but the key is facing the issue and plunging forth. Great job, Claire!!👏👏(Hi Fred!😺)
Wise wise words Viv! I've always done invisible zips so can install with my eyes closed but normal zips gaah! Like you say we have to combat them! Thanks for watching and Fred says hi back! X
Congratulations! I still haven’t attempted trousers. I really want to make the Winslow’s but I’m so scared. The zip doesn’t worry me but the fit issues do. I do love Helens Closet patterns. Thanks for sharing!
Hi ya! Oh do give them a go! They are a good pattern. I think perhaps I should have left the pattern alone and made up out of the packet. A few have said the waist comes up big and that was my case. If you do a toile then that'll help. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised x
Penguin and Pear Dressmaking I think I may give it a go. I have a 4 day weekend coming up... I appreciate the waist info - that’s a problem I have. I go with the measurements so it won’t be tight and then it turns up an inch too big! So I may toile them - which I never do - just to make sure the fit. Especially since they look to be an easy make.
The good thing is if the waist comes up a little big you could increase the pleats a little to get the perfect fit good luck not that you need it do let me know how you get on x
Well done hon! I’ve got my Winslow’s cut out. My first trousers too. I’m a bit nervous too because my waist is about the same size as my hips and I need a size 18 for hips and 26 for waist. I’m worried that if I make them to fit my waist I’ll have huge amounts of excess fabric around my hips and I can’t see a way of avoiding that. Love your fabric choice! I love your videos! 🌟
Hi ya. Dont use hips to decide on size. The pattern is designed to have lots of fabric at the hips. It will work out fine. The only measurements to worry about is the waist. You'll do just fine!!! Xx
Hi Jayne. Thank you appreciate that. I love the ultimate trousers the look of them is exactly my thing (I have the pattern) but I'd need quite a bit of work go the pattern due to my size. The sabrina slims by love notions are similar and come in my size so I think I'll try those next. X
You are an inspiration! :) I have been trying to make trousers during this past summer.I measured over and over before I cut, and they came out about 2 sizes too big. I will have to re-cut them (later!). Then a second pair, that looked like clown pants, and were also way too big, but I wear them at home when it is really hot out. After that culottes, similar to yours and they looked much better, but still way too big. Taking a break but will try again, perseverance wins every time. And I wrote to you that I had the Ashton top cut out and was looking forward to making mine after seeing your video. I made that way too big also. I need to learn about ease for woven fabrics, as I make knit tops all the time, and they are great. Love your culottes, and such gorgeous fabric! 🇨🇦
Thanks Nancy very kind of you to say so! I find with woven garments it does take time to get them right compared to Jersey. Jersey is so easy because it fits itself but you'll get there. The effort is worth it.
Woven fabrics don't stretch as much as knits do. Patterns for knit fabrics usually run on the small side to be sure they fit to the body, rather than over it. No idea why a woven substitute would come out bigger. Whatever you make. Know your own measurements and work with those, not the suggested sizes on pattern envelopes. So measuring bust/waist/hip pieces at the seamlines and multipling by four. At age 61 after 3 babies my half hip measures the same as my full hip but most of it is across the.fullness of my belly. I've learnt to make pattern allowances for that. Normal back, size up at front often works. Just remember to check the waistband before cutting it short. Yeah. Made that mistake.
Lovely vlog/review. Beautiful fabric, nice make. I've only made trousers for my 2yr old grandson, which actually came together really well considering it was a burda pattern !!! :)
Good for you! Your trousers look great. I’ve been sewing for years and have always been intimidated. I know it’s hard to get a good fit so shame on me I’ve never even tried to make trousers.
Im just at the waistband stage of the shorts version of my winslow culottes. Apart from elastic waistbands this is my first proper pair of bottoms. I have a fear of zips!!!!
Well done Claire 👏 I love the fabric too 🤗 I have made some Palazzo trousers very early on, but they are a little big now, but like you they are not really my style but I do intend making more when I feel a little more confident 🤗😊💖 xx
Ah glad it's been helpful Nancy. I feel much the same. I do want some regular trousers so will give those love notions ones another go. Thanks for your support xx
@@Penguinandpear I don't think so. Yoga pants are usually looser fitting with a very wide elastic waistband. They are made from stretch fabrics that skim the body rather than fit so tightly.
Well done! congrats! The flowery ones look so lovely! the fabric is really really pretty! keep it up! I also made my first pair of VERY similar trousers! Elastic band, pattern from an old Burda (may or june 1996) and i actually really like them. I first used the pattern to make lining for some linen trousers -they were SO sheer! and then i used the linen trousers to make a pajama trousers/bottoms. I only started sewing in january this year :) I'm really pleased with how my trousers and lining turned out. The only bummer part is that they were TOO big at the waist, so i made pleats that are actually hidden by the elastic band. the crotch is also very low - so i think the sizing was/is off or i didn't measure myself well enough o.o
Wow you are doing so well - making trousers in your first year sewing! I am impressed! The crotch *is* very low but when I bought it up it didnt work as the crotch is needed for the drape.
@@Penguinandpear Thank you for the kind words! I actually needed some trousers that are made of a thin fabric - all i had was jeans and a pair of wool? shorts that i don't really like. I also thought that if i am to be serious about making clothes, I will need to make some trousers at some point, so I might as well start now ;p
ooohh i like these! good job! pants are very scary to me but i started out with Ninni Culottes by named clothing and it was pretty seamless... my jeans making is a whole other horrible story haha. i can never get the waist right. i have to keep trying. i think you look great in these pants though! i love the fabric as well
Gorgeous culottes! I have made the Colette Junipers which are wide leg pants but I was not keen on the finished pair and made me look like a clown! Since then have not made trousers 🤪
Thank you! Oh that's such a shame! Perhaps you might have a better experience with slimmer trousers? Dont let your experience put you off.. I kind of feel like a clown in these even though lots of said how nice they are x
My first pair of trousers were just elasticated. they were ok but a little tight across the bum. so then I tried a proper pair with a zip at the side but went up a size from the norm. they were huge! so then I had to take them in which was a bit of a nightmare to do well. I got there in the end but it has put me off a bit. I am now considering making another pair but maybe a drawstring pair. I think I need to extend the crutch on the back pattern. ???? Wish me luck! xx
Wow Sandra you've had quite the journey! I did consider making mine elasticated but decided against it. Increasing the crotch seam length is super easy. I'll put that on my list to show! Thanks for your comment x
I have made trousers but it was when I was about 4 stone lighter. 😯 It so tricky to find trousers that look with my large tummy. 😔 Nevertheless I enjoyed your detailed review of these culottes, thank you.
Hi Mary. It's so hard as a plus size isnt it. I tend to think slimmer trousers look better on bigger people and although these were not right for me it has encouraged me to try others. I think trousers where your shirt can cover your tummy are good for our body confidence and that's hard in loose trousers. I appreciate your support x
Thank you, a lot of great information. Appreciate your complete honesty. Keep at it, we learn with experience. Love your kitty, so pretty/handsome. Is it a boy?
I have made pants and they are tricky to fit. Your flower pants look nice on you. Try it again this time no fiddling with the pattern and I think you will have better success.
Hilarious about the Margot trousers, I think I prefer the zip in the waist idea the thought of having a zip at the back doesn’t appeal to me. The fabric is beautiful and I thought you looked great in them I did not realise the crotch is meant to be lower in culottes so there you go you learn some new every day! 🤗
Hi ya! Yeah I much prefer the zip in the side too. Much easier to access. Thank you for your kind words! Yeah the crotch situ is probably the thing I dont like about palazzo pants too used to leggings!! X
Love the culottes Claire you look great in them. I’ve had many fitting issues with trousers and haven’t cracked it yet. The best so far have been the Emerson by true bias made straight out of the packet in the largest size. A little tight on the crotch seam. Love your pattern reviews so down to earth 😊🥰love B 🐝
Thank you Bridget!!! Ah yes true bias! They will be extending their sizes later this year I believe and I cannot wait! Its super easy to add a bit of extra to the crotch seam. This has come up a few times so I will see if I can put together a tutorial. Glad you are enjoying the channel x
Brilliant job! Can I encourage you to look at the named clothing Alexandra peg trousers. They are elasticated but they are really nice and have interesting pockets. I made them in a crepe and whilst I don’t really like the fabric, I’m super pleased with them. X Also don’t bother with drawstring unless you want to. Mine don’t need it
Thanks Jan! I do loved named clothing but sadly I dont fit in their size range :-( I really want their book but I know itd be unused. Thanks for your support x
Yay for you! Trousers are so daunting, but you did a great job. I could really relate to your comments about measurements. I gave up sewing for myself (40 years ago) because I couldn't face my size being even bigger on patterns than RTW. I wonder why they don't use letters or something without all the baggage!
Thank you! It was a horrible feeling wasnt it! I think some companies do use letters such as xxl in some ways I think however they label it we will attach meaning I guess we have to get away from putting our own judgement on our sizes. Not an easy task when were bombarded with negative messages about being bigger. Xx
Pants always require learning fitting skills. Have a look at Sure Fit Designs to gain the flexibility you need to understand how to achieve better fitting for any body size and shape. You'll be able to adjust your patterns before you cut your beautiful fabrics. Otherwise following bought patterns for standard bodies can more often than not , just leads to disappointing results.
Thanks. I'm aware of Sure Fit Designs I've been watching Glenda for years. This is only my first pair so I think I can be forgiven for not having them perfect. I'm at the beginning of my fitting journey with trousers. The problem actually came from trying to change the pattern to fit my body whereas had I left the pattern as intended they'd have been fine.
Thank you so much for all of your lovely comments - every video your comments make my day so I am sending you a big THANK YOU!!!
Hi Claire, I really love your floral fabric and I have seen zips put in far worse than you did! You just went off a bit at the top. I admire your determination and I think you are an inspiration. Also appreciate your theme! I hope you are doing well health wise.

What a lovely heart felt comment, thank you so much!
I love these, I suit knee length skirts so this is a great way to have shorter trousers that suit me.
This video made my day, you are so sweet! Thank you for sharing your experience :)
They look great and I'm so grateful that you share your mistakes so we can learn along with you. I'm very much tempted to try this pattern.
This is quite an old video now. If I made them again I wouldn’t alter the crotch this time. That was my mistake. It’s a good pattern.
So glad I found your videos! I enjoy your dry sense of humor. Thank you for your honesty and you inspire me to try more things for plus size wear, too.
Thanks Maria, so glad you like my channel. Merry Christmas
Looks so beautiful, now I want floral Motiv trousers, too!!

I love that you are happy with the trousers Claire, the only person you have to please is you, well done, I too love your honesty
Thanks. The trousers themselves I'm not too happy with but the fact I made them and got over that hurdle is great! Thanks for your support Dot x
Fantastic job!! I’ve made slacks several times, but it still intimidates me.
Thank you. I guess it's one of those things isnt it!

Well done. The Nagoya pants by Papercut Patterns are really good with easy to follow instructions.

I have made lots of yoga pants! I would think that these would be a great transition toward form fitting pants-plus they are great to wear.
Are yoga pants the same as leggings? If so I've made those too. Great tip! X
@@sapphirecamui6447 its actually a great thing because you'll be fearless in your sewing journey!
ooohh i like these! good job! pants are very scary to me but i started out with Ninni Culottes by named clothing and it was pretty seamless... my jeans making is a whole other horrible story haha. i can never get the waist right. i have to keep trying. i think you look great in these pants though! i love the fabric as well
Ah thank you, you are very kind. Check out lifting pins and needles I'm sure she has some videos about Jean's x
Even when I was 55kg I had chub rub! Sometimes it's just the way we are built :)
I think you have a point there Georgiana!
Claire i do love your videos, the floral culottes are beautiful are beautiful and suit u really well, stay well and keep sewing
And good luck buy you dont need it um sure!! X
Thank you for the reply Penguin and Pear Dressmaking. I’ll keep searching. 😊
Thank you, a lot of great information. Appreciate your complete honesty. Keep at it, we learn with experience. Love your kitty, so pretty/handsome. Is it a boy?
Thanks Claudia. I appreciate your kind words. Kitty is a boy called Fred.
I have made pants and they are tricky to fit. Your flower pants look nice on you. Try it again this time no fiddling with the pattern and I think you will have better success.
Thanks Jan x
Thanks Claire I’d love to see that 😊B🐝
Brilliant job! Can I encourage you to look at the named clothing Alexandra peg trousers. They are elasticated but they are really nice and have interesting pockets. I made them in a crepe and whilst I don’t really like the fabric, I’m super pleased with them. X
Also don’t bother with drawstring unless you want to. Mine don’t need it
Thanks Jan! I do loved named clothing but sadly I dont fit in their size range :-( I really want their book but I know itd be unused. Thanks for your support x
Also don’t bother with drawstring unless you want to. Mine don’t need it
I may revisit the love notions ones I mentioned in the vlog x
Trousers are easy to sew and horrible to fit 🙂 Well done on the culottes x
Thank you Alex x
Sigh, trousers my arch nemesis. One day, one day.
I know how you feel with that Hayley!!!! We just gotta dive in is my feeling now I think!
Claire I just sent you message on Instagram.
I've replied x
