My son who’s a senior in high school (Connecticut) just got an appointment offer on his 18th birthday (what are the odds) and accepted it 2 1/2 days later!!!!! We’re so incredibly proud of him and all the hard work he has put in his academics, sports, leadership etc

Hello, who has been to West Point ? Do they have training there for 3rd Mates ? ( for working on a Ship as a 3rd officier )

With prior service I think you'll have a good start. It's always better to know what military life is really like before you go to the academy.

John Steelman pretty much everything is paid for if you go to West Point
There is not tuition at attend West Point. You will however be required to serve in the Army for a minimum of 5 years.

John Steelman must be 17-22 at the time you start your first year

It is not a campus, it is a Army Instalation / Post.
Exactly. Trying to present USMA as just another college or university Isn playing with fire. All of the Academies-USMA, USNA, USCGA and USMMA- have one purpose and that is to train officers. Dumbing down standards in attempts to make the Academies more attractive runs the real risk of questioning whether these institutions are worth the cost. Civilian universities and colleges with ROTC programs annually turn out thousands more officers at much cheaper cost. There has got to be a distinct difference in the “product” if these government funded institutions are to survive. Tradition alone is not enough when it comes to a Congress with certain social agendas! Enough said!
They carry books anymore? The worse thing was walking through a sally port during February with your 10 pounds physic book and 8 pound history book, hitting a patch of ice and going flying. All while smelling the rotten food smell of the mess hall.
What the hell is going on in that cadet’s room? What an embarrassment.
And what is with the lock on the door. Back in the day a cadet’s room was subject to a”no notice” inspection by the officer and cadet leadership at any time. Basically there was no privacy and that was part of the training and the process!
Only the start of the journey. Outside, the world becomes real, although one of the biggest challenges is discerning that. You are played by the opposition (the Palestinian cause is an issue right now), and by your own political leaders, whose insistence on their own dogmas may pose issues with your probity.
