    I studied in RMCC (Royal Military College of Canada) in the early 2010-s. We had a mess that served beer and wine to all cadets, regardless of what year you were in. It was a big shock when I went on a 3-day exchange to West Point realizing that there were several different messes segregated by the year in West Point. The other disappointing moment came when my host (3-rd year West Point cadet) said that if you are caught by another cadet drinking while on leave, he must report you. If he does not, you can report him for not obeying his duties. This concept to us, as Canadians seems very wild. None of my squadronmates at RMC reported each other to the CoC, and even if someone did, they would a black sheep for the rest of their career.

      A psychiatrist wrote a book about the psychology (psychopathology?) of West Point. I think it was titled "The Ivory Fortress". The administration of WP is fully aware of the effect of their system on the vulnerable psyches of young people. I was once told, "It;s the sacrifice the country makes."

      @PrinceAnt722 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @user-vq5hb5cp4n If the graduate is still active, their letter can carry some weight in the selection process. I remember seeing West Point cadets working side by side with my Drill Sargeants when I was in Basic Training. One of the cadets was prior enlisted as an MP before enrolling at the Academy. She received her letter from her battalion commander, also a graduate from the Point.

      @@PrinceAnt722 Your confusing recommendation letters and nominations. Recommendation letters are just references to help the admissions committee get insight into the candidate. A nomination is the legal ability to compete for an appointment. When you receive an appointment, the appointment will be charged under one of your nominations. Other than that, you are correct that a rec letter from an academy grad does carry weight.
      The prior enlisted MP your referring to was nominated by the battalion commander. He may have also written a rec letter. The nominations from CO's is only available to prior enlisted soldiers. Not just any academy grad can do it. The CO doesn't actually have to be an academy grad. Being an academy grad has nothing to do with it. It has to be a CO of a unit. Further that CO can only nominate their own soldiers.

    What is the medal ribbon Cadet English wears?

    • @jscotty349
      @jscotty349 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      national defense service ribbon - basically a free-lunch award because everyone that joins the army or navy or any u.s. military branch automatically gets one, as long as he joins during a time of war - which is why he has one, since he said he is in year two which means he joined about 2 years ago, when they were still showering these things out, as anyone that joined after 2001 (9/11) was considered serving during the "war on terrorism", which lasted until the u.s. pulled out of afghanistan in 2021, and given how slow things go in the pentagon at times, they finally decided they would stop awarding these starting in 2023, therefore this had been the first ribbon for anyone who signed up over the past 20 years or so, and he was among the last to get it (until the u.s. gets into another active war, that is)
      the interesting thing is he also has the parachutist badge on top of that ribbon, which is arguably much more meaningful - in the usual army it would be the other way around, you need to first prove yourself by earning tons of awards (ribbons) and demonstrate that you are the pride of the unit, before your unit would even consider sending you to airborne school to get that parachutist badge, because every training you go to the unit has to fight for the slot and budget and navigate all that hassles in the bureaucratic machine, so they generally only send the most decorated and best deserving ones to trainings like airborne, air assaults, etc. unless of course there are mission requirements, such as the unit being an airborne unit like the 82nd, then they would just send you no matter what. but normally a guy with a lone ribbon that everybody else has would hardly be looked at to go to any specialty trainings at all. I suppose just getting accepted to west point is considered an achievement, plus west point has all the budgets in the world, so they could just send their students to whatever trainings they wanted.
