Life as a Juvenile Inside Prison | Behind Bars Documentary - Jacob's Story

  • From our archive: During a day filming inside Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility, our crew was in the prison yard filming when a "Signal 10" was issued throughout the facility. A Signal 10 meant an emergency was in effect somewhere in the prison and officers were called to immediately run to the situation.
As our cameras ran alongside the officers to the cell unit where the emergency was confined, we followed the officers inside where we saw teenager Jacob under duress inside a time out cell. Jacob was pacing inside the cell and pulling his hair, angry and upset that a unit officer had earlier told him to go back into his room. An argument ensued, and Jacob was put in the time out cell which caused him to become even more upset.
Staff at the prison knew Jacob well. He had a tendency to lash out when he felt things were unfair inside the prison. In this video, viewers get an unprecedented look at how officers handled the tense situation, what Jacob told our cameras as we followed him to the nurses station to be checked out following the meltdown in his time out cell, and what things really look like inside a maximum-security juvenile prison when emergency situations arise.
Update: We have been unable to find any updated information on how Jacob has done following his release from prison.

Not necessarily wrong. By saying that, it gives a hot headed person who is about to commit violent act a guidance to redirect his thoughts.

As a kid in the foster system, mostly homeless and on the streets, I was in and out of the juvenile system. I caught my first charge at the age of 9 years old and it was downhill from there. I was lucky enough that none of my charges carried over as an adult. But as soon as I was about to turn 18, I did everything I could to get my act together. Finally turned 18, got a job, my own place, and kept my head down and kept trucking. Haven’t been in trouble since. I feel bad for a lot of these kids…I hope they are able to find inner peace and realize that things can be better. Good luck youngens.

@Animal Lover I couldn't agree with you more! Which is why I am dead set AGAINST trying kids as adults and throwing them in prisons! Their brains, specifically the frontal cortex which gives us reasoning, logic and following things through to a conclusion is nowhere near formed yet. Thank God the Supreme Court ruled that kids can't be given life sentences as it violates the 8th Amendment for this very reason. Kids need either mental hospitals if they suffer from some kind of mental illness which led to or was a factor in the crime and juvenile facilities where they can receive school as well as therapy to help them as most kids CAN be rehabilitated as their brain is still growing.
My comment was strictly an opposing view to the OP's comment that no one cared about him. If he fathered a child, someone had to care about him at SOME point, right?

My heart is for broken teenager. I worked in a high school for 6 years, I loved every minute of it. One student told in that he looked forward to coming to lunch because there was no pressure. And we could joke around together. Yes I was the lunch lady manager. I alway treated them with respect. Because you never knew what they were going through at home, with a girlfriend or boyfriend or even a step parent. I loved all my students. We started out with about 50 to 75 students & when I left we were up to 300 to 350.

It kinda broke my heart when he said he is a grown man. He is only 19… 🤦🏻‍♀️ like if he had the proper role models in life and people helping him maybe he would be mature like a “grow man” but he didn’t he is still a kid… 🤦🏻‍♀️

I remember being in the juvenile system. It hurts you a lot more than helping you. Many of the kids including myself didn’t realize what I was doing and how I was acting wasn’t right, while many of us didn’t have home lives that made us care whether we were in jail or not while the probation and juvie system wouldn’t help and only try to keep you locked up and mad af

    • @freeflyer151
      @freeflyer151 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes it absolutely does!!! It sets kids up for failure or prison. Institutionalizing kids is torture. Locking them in cells should not even happen, it literally helps nobody and makes them worse. Their brewing can not cope with being in a cell like that. I know I couldn’t. It’s physically torturous too. Not to mention how freezing cold it is w only a nasty wool blanket to try to stay warm and sleep w lights blaring in your eyes 24/7.

So sad to hear your sadness and truth about the system 😨😭most of all it's so sad to hear a child say that their parents who are supposed to be taking care of them are the ones that drove them to the juvenile system.
I am also a product of such parents, my thought, on the matter they shouldn't have kids. My mother had 6 boys 4 girls all different fathers just to give you an example. None of my stepsisters speaks to me, because they all turned out to be like our mother promiscuous. There is a saying "you can choose your friends but not your family." There is also a say in life one can change their destiny the choice is there success is a battle between you and yourself.
Don't allow ppl to take away from you the opportunity or choice to change your destiny.
I did you can do it also.
I wish you all the best and if you need a friend to write to or talk to feel free. Wishing you 12 months of happiness in the 2022 walk-in faith. Stay safe and blessed

In '89 I was placed in juvie because I kept running away. I first ran from my abusive family, 3 times they tried to make me go home and after the 3rd time I stopped trusting the system to help. Nobody believed my dad raped me, starved, and beat me.
When I ended up in juvie I was broken, and I kept acting up to express my pain. I feel sorry for the staff now. I was horrible, but I hurt so bad I couldn't help it.
It took tons of therapy and medication to get me where I am 30 years later.
Some of these kids are broken, they need love even when they don't want it. They need somebody to believe them, and believe in them. The pain is real.
Today though it's been 30 years I still wake in a cold sweat, afraid. And I see red everytime a kid dies, or is irrevocably damaged because the system ignores them.

I have been able to find a slight update on Jacob, for those who are interested.
He was incarcerated sometime in 2017 for a charge related to traffic, as well as a charge relating to meth. He also had another for public intimidation. I am assuming he got out because he had posted some stuff on Facebook around 2018.
Unfortunately, in 2021, he was caught trying to meet a 15 year old for sex. He would’ve been around 31 at this time. It is unclear whether he got incarcerated for this or not. He was caught by a TH-cam group and not law enforcement officials, so it is very much possible he could have gotten away with it. Since he was not pursued by law enforcement, i can neither confirm or deny the credibility of this accusation.
The most recent activity I have found from him was from February 2022. It seems he is no longer in jail, but still struggling with drugs. I hope he is able to get some help.
I am in no means defending his actions, especially the one regarding the 15 year old, but it is incredibly sad to see where he is now. He had absolutely no support in life from the very beginning. It seems it is still that way. He needs help; he needs support, and he needs someone that can lead him down the right path. Jacob is a troubled man, he was troubled as a kid thanks to his shitty parents, and he will remain troubled unless there is someone who is willing to help him. I wish I could go back to 2007 and help this young man. He needed someone to give him confidence and help him get his life together yet no one showed. I don’t want to hear ‘he could have done this himself’ or ‘he makes his own decisions’... he doesn’t KNOW HOW to make those decisions, because no one was present to help him learn good vs bad. This man needs someone. Immediately.

So Sad to see young kid's like this with the issues they have . The help he needs should have started a long time ago. Had he have got the help younger and positive role models in his life he may not be where he is now. I hope he get's the help he needs and don't end up in prison He is young and you can tell there is a good guy in there . Like the nurse said One on One time he needs that Bless that nurse that she understands that .Jacob is blessed to have Alana the nurse where he is at

@Keith Martz -- you are very right. Help earlier vs. later can make all the difference. Untreated trauma can lead to more trauma later in life. Some kids are able to emerge and live happy lives, while others continue to struggle. It's all very individual. Thank you for commenting.

I just cry when I see this. Those children must have had some hard times to get the way they are and do the things they do. I had a life like theirs only I was saved by a police man and nuns who raised me from the age of 9 to 16. I worked with children to try to make a difference in their lives on several occasions. 50 years ago the children we had were runaways, thefts, and prostitution. Very few were heavy drug users. I see a big difference from then to now. They commit more serious crimes now. God please save the children.

I just wonder what has happened to Jacob now. He would be 32. He is a handsome, kind, funny and intelligent boy who with the right parenting I think could we have been outstanding. Imagine his father trying to kill him at 3. His whole life was just being shuffled from place to place. Loved the nurse too.

I can imagine his father trying to kill him at 3. I can even imagine his mother stabbing her next hubbie 40 some odd times in the back. What I'm trying to imagine is him boofing at age 14 and having a daughter! One thing is for sure. He stopped being 'shuffled' long enough for THAT and someone sure did care about the handsome, funny and intelligent boy at SOME point. By the by, just HOW intelligent is it to be boofing and having kids when you're only 14?

The women responsible for calming down the patient by telling him to calm down and not hurt himself, through a closed door, is anything but protocol. By the looks of their lack of physical well-being I don't think much good can happen. The young man was in crisis and should have been properly attended. Unfortunately he was left to deal with problem alone. My heart breaks for those young children The staff needing somewhere to go did to that young man what everyone in his life has done...left him when he needed them the most. This is unacceptable.. One does not stand outside the door and think that everything will be alright saying "don't hurt yourself. That young man is in dire straights at that facility. By looking at the faculty, with the amount of extremely over weight people protocol seems to be thrown out the door. Having said that, I honestly believe their hearts are in the right place. But remember. the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
