Best scented houseplants for indoor fragrance: Jasminum sambac, the Sambac Jasmine / Arabian Jasmine

  • Jasminum sambac, the Sambac Jasmine, also called Arabian Jasmine, is one of the best scented houseplants for indoor fragrance if you live in cold climates: ideal for conservatories and greenhouses, can also be grown near a sunny window as long as you prune it frequently, because this shrub is a very vigorous plant and can grow up to 3 metres tall; however it is absolutely stunning if you can grow it outdoors (USDA 9 and up). Unlike the common name suggests, Jasminum sambac is not native to Arabia (that as many of us know, it is almost totally covered by desert), but it is and it was cultivated in several gardens in Arabia, where it was imported from the real area of origin, that is tropical Southern and South-Eastern Asia. It is widely cultivated not only in Asia, but in many tropical and subtropical countries as garden plant, or as conservatory and greenhouse plant in temperate and cold climate countries. This plant is frost tender and can be cultivated outdoors only from USDA zone 9 and up, while in most of the UK and other temperate and cold climate zones, from USDA 8 and below, needs to be cultivated indoors, but can be brought outside e.g. on a patio in summer, or even spring and autumn if the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius. The best soil for this plant is acidic and the best exposure is full sun, even if can adapt to neutral or slightly alkaline soil, and partial shade. Jasminum sambac is evergreen and has ovate leaves, bright green, but the reason that this plant is so widely cultivated around the world is not the foliage, but its beautiful and very fragrant flowers.
There are several varieties of Jasminum sambac, with different sizes and shapes of the flower: in this video I show you the nominal species, with single flowers about 2-2.5 cm across, however there are varieties with double or even triple flowers, bigger in size, such as the beautiful "Grand Duke of Tuscany". The scent is gorgeous, one of my favourite fragrances among all my plants, very citrusy with sweet notes; the intensity is very powerful in the evening, but even in the morning can be clearly detected at a metre far from the plant (I have only two flowers in bloom today, and mine is a pretty small plant, but obviously the more the flowers, the stronger the scent around the plant will be). The Sambac Jasmine can bloom throughout the year, so this is one of the best reasons to cultivate this species in your house, if you have enough space, because its fragrance can create a magical atmosphere at home. The scent is so widely appreciated that not only it had been cultivated so widely, but its flowers are used for the extraction of essential oils to be used as ingredients in perfumes, as well as to flavour tea, making the famous jasmine tea.
It is not a very easy plant to find in the UK; I bought a small plant from Hayloft ( hayloft.co.uk ) two years ago but I bought this bigger one featured and blooming in this video from an Italian specialist in Jasmines and Pelargoniums, Vivai Malvarosa ( www.malvarosa.it/en/categoria-prodotto/jasminum-en/ ) .

I love this variety of Jasmine so much, i’ve had mine for six years now and it’s huge! I keep it in the garage during the winter and it pulls through beautifully. It’s one of my favorite scents.

I completely agree, it is one of my favourite scents too. You should try also Jasminum grandiflorum and Jasminum azoricum, they smell absolutely great!!!

I have also this plant on my terrace. It's my favorite flower . The perfume is soo rich and floral and mysterious more greener than the jasminum grandiflorum.

My friend your videos are fantastic. No other reviewers in the U.K or for that matter, any english speaking countries give such fantastic reviews about scented plants. Please make a video about Jasminum azoricum. And if you could point us to where we can buy it from. It is not available anywhere is the U.K.
I am in the hunt for the best scented jasmines/flowers in the U.K. and so far you are the best source of information for this. Please don’t stop

Thanks very much again for the very nice comments. I saw once a plant of Jasminum azoricum for sale at B & Q in the UK, maybe if you contact them they can check with their supplier if there is any in stock. I will make a video about Jasminum azoricum as soon as it blooms

i have bought most of the scented flowering plants you have reviewed so far and I haven’tbeen disappointed . I think i share the same taste as you when it comes to flower scents. I can’t wait for the next video about jasmines lol. All the best my friend. A piece of advice. If you can improve your video editing just a little bit, you would be the biggest plant reviewer worldwide. And let’s see your face, people love the person behind the product. It is the biggest selling point of any successful product. Be the steve jobs of plants. Don’t sell yourself short. You are a tasteful individual and people will appreciate that.
    Peace, all the best

Thanks very much also for the idea about improving my videos, unfortunately I shoot my videos alone so it is difficult to get me and my plants in the same frame as I am always worried the plants and flowers are out of focus, but I agree with a good program of video editing I can shoot different videos and then combine them together in one video. I will make my best for improving the next videos, cheers

thanks very much... there are a few sellers on eBay that sell young plants. Alternatively, you can buy from Paramount Plants, they sell very big specimens, so they are quite expensive www.paramountplants.co.uk/plant/jsaj/jasminum-sambac-arabian-jasmine.html

Hello, I bought the plant that is now in bloom from Vivai Malvarosa, as mentioned in the description of the video (I put also the link in the de scription) , it is a nursery in Italy specialising in Jasmines and Pelargoniums. However I bought another sambac jasmine two years ago from a nursery in the UK, Hayloft.co.uk, the plant from Hayloft is a lot smaller, but being a British nursery, the shipping will be a lot quicker, because after Brexit the paperwork checks is very time consuming (can take up to several weeks and the plants in the box risk to die). However if you love jasmines in particular, I think that Vivai Malvarosa has the widest range of species and varieties you can find throughout Europe
