      Do you have or can you make a video on purchasing plants from overseas.
      .
      I would like to purchase some "under the sea" Coleus.
      .
      It was developed in Canada but very hard to buy it because the rights were given to US growers. Anyone know where I can buy from a Canadian retailer so there is no customs and border hassle bringing a Canadian developed plant back into Canada?

    I proplift coleus from garden beds outside office buildings and malls. Little did I know that my forgetful nature was what made it all possible. Never have I ever remembered to put them in water right away, instead always waking up in the middle of the night a day later to grab the forgotten wilted stalk from my work bag to put it in water.

    A tip for other coleus strippers: This year, I fell in love with some of the beautiful coleus leaves I was stripping. They are like works of art. I dried them, scored some silver thrifted frames, and framed them against origami paper in complementary colors. I've hung them on a dimly lit wall, and the colors are still amazing.

    Omg thank you for making this video! I wish people would just understand that a plant is a plant and if you fulfill it's cultural needs, it'll live anywhere. (even shrubs)
    I have a Horticulture degree (btw you're like the only houseplant TH-camr that I don't cringe at) and did an internship at a big name production nursery. No kidding we would throw away thousands of Coleus a day and I may or may not have procured about 20 varieties from a trash can.
    The reason I'm commenting though is plant patents.
    It's either 10 or 20 years after a variety has been granted a patent it ""expires"". I mention this bc Coleus boomed in the 70s so a lot of varieties (especially the ones found in planters in your parks or downtown 👀) are likely no longer TM varieties.
    Proven Winners and Terra Nova are pretty much the only ones who keep pumping out patented ones yearly and they all look *a lot* like one variety or another that's no longer protected so you can just tell the plant police your Gucci is just a knock off.
    Honestly the genetics are what's patented anyway and they aren't going to DNA test your annual. Its more a warning for nursery owners who are trying to save a buck by propping without a contract with Ball or PanAm or whoever. As long as you don't sell them you're good.
    Btw your unnamed friend looks like ""but probably isnt"" a Kong® Rose.

    Amazing and applicable alliteration as always!
    I'll be growing my coleus from seed next season. Love the house/garden plant crossover - I have 'strawberry begonia' that is happily in the ground (NC Piedmont, 7b) and a customer from Charlotte showed me her thaumatophyllum that comes back every year like the rest of her elephant ears.

      @phytosexual  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, I knew that thaumatophyllum was pretty hardy but not 7b!

      @@phytosexual my guess is that she has a little microclimate, being in an old neighborhood in the middle of the city, maybe effectively like 8b. Plus mulching and it is densely planted with lots of native palms and other more tropical things.

    Awesome! Won't post here without permission but there is an active International Coleus Society with a database of 1600 cultivars form 1852 to present. By the way, most patented Coleus have about 1-6 other names under which they are sold to avoid legal entanglements. That happens in many genera but Coleus in a bigger way than most. Stealing patented Coleus is not a victim-less crime. The University of Florida who raised WASABI, BIG RED JUDY, and ELECTRIC LIME among many others, uses their royalties to fund scholarships for horticulture students and internships that go into breeding more cultivars.

      I imagine with the sheer numbers of coleus and ease/speed of propagation this would happen.

      Is the International Coleus Society still going strong? The website seems somewhat unkept.

    Love this! I cut down my outdoor coleus every year and prop indoors, replanting in the summer. Free plants every year! They’re not rare by any means but there’s so many varieties, and like you mentioned even within the same plant you get different variegation. And yes, growing all them was worth it for the thumbnail 😅

    totally laughed out loud "with a coconut".
    You are so kinda wierdly different and I love you.
    My problem with Coleus is that the plant is at its zenith for a few months and then you slowly watch it die.
    Your collection is breath taking.

    • @phytosexual
      @phytosexual  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the one stipulation is that they need a bit of sun in the winter to maintain their shape. We love coconuts falling on people.

    um, amazing video. I love coleus because I basically throw them out on my balcony in the summer, they grow huge and flower, and then I prop a few stems in the fall, replant and let them sit under my fancy grow lights with the philodendrons in the winter, and by spring they're full plants ready to go back outside again. I won't lie, they take a bit of abuse from me (all of my energy goes towards my tiny variegated monstera I've been trying to grow for 1.5 years, or my warocqueanum with 1 leaf left), but they are troopers. and honestly, more attractive than either of those ~*~rare*~* plants. Thanks to your video they will be slightly less neglected from here on out.

    I use extremely small cuttings so no bag needed. Top two levels are left on and strip the rest. No long cuttings. Leave it on the plant for future branches to grow. No bag and roots in 3-14 days

    I'm excited! I love coleus, and try to save as many as I can each fall . I always try to get as many colors and varieties as I can. Sadly, very few of these live longer than a couple of months. To me it seems that the fancier the variety, the more delicate it is. It is a good idea to close them up in a baggie, however. I don't know why I didn't think of that. I let my succulents callus over. Anyway, thanks for the tip.
