  • Experts list amantadine as one of the third tier medication options for treating ADHD - behind the stimulants and FDA approved treatments like Strattera (atomoxetine) and Intuniv (guanfacine). Amantadine is most commonly used as a dopamine boosting agent used to treat Parkinson’s disease.
A handful of studies have shown that amantadine can help impulsivity, aggression, and attention in ADHD. All of the subjects have been children or adolescents. Side effects from amantadine tend to be mild (headache, decreased appetite). The medication is inexpensive because its a generic. Amantadine can be used alone to treat ADHD, or can be combined with stimulants. It appears to help some individuals who did not benefit from, or could not tolerate first and second tier agents.
Amantadine interacts with a number of different brain receptors, and its mechanism of action is unclear. It was actually first used as an antiviral agent to combat influenza A.

I'm a 53 yr old woman with late diagnosed AuDHD and CPTSD. Stuck in a functional freeze state for the better part of a year. I have developed agoraphobia. I struggle with fatigue, as well as the distractability of the adhd. I started on this med today. I am on Adderall for adhd. Propranolol and prazosin for CPTSD. Effexor xr. And omeprazole for acid reflux that seems to be so common amongst us neurodivergent people. I am extremely hopeful for good results.

Doctor, what do you think about the combination of amantadine and atomoxetine?
I have been searching online for a long time but have not found any research on the combination of these two drugs. I am currently taking atomoxetine, which is very effective for my concentration, but I still have no motivation to do anything. I am considering adding amantadine to increase my dopamine. There are almost no mainstream ADHD treatment drugs in my country, and stimulants are also strictly prohibited, so I am considering amantadine. And it's very cheap

To me it sounds like a reasonable option to pursue, but without knowing your precise individual history, I can't make specific medical recommendations.

@@DrJohnKruseyeah oddly enough some drugs seem to put you in a state lower than baseline if you take it long enough aswell.

doc, why do you think it's said that Clonidine needs to build up in the system to have an effect on Adhd while it's effects on anxiety and insomnia is immediate?

Drugs can have different time courses for different actions. You might have had fever or felt lousy a day after taking the COVID vaccine, but your antibody levels and ability to fight off the virus didn't rise appreciably for a week or more. With SSRI, nausea and sexual side effects tend to appear quickly, within a day or two, but improvement in mood or anxiety can take weeks. So it is possible that clonidine has immediate effects and delayed effects.
But another dimension is how we study these medications. If we only look at time points a week or two apart, it is impossible to know whether the drug has immediate effects.

Thank you for this very helpful and informative vid Dr. Kruse. I was just put on Amantadine, Effexor and Topomax for my health issues. I am sensitive to many meds, but am hoping and praying this combination helps me. Your vid gives me hope. Thanks again. Take care, God bless.

If my son is already taking 1mg of Intuniv (guanfacine) and was prescribed Amantadine are they ok to take together? Interactions?

I can't make specific medical recommendations without knowing someone's full history and presentation, but in terms of general information, the two are not likely to have any dangerous interactions.

Would combining a low dose of Amantadine with Memantine be ok?

They do seem to be working primarily on different brain systems, so there is certainly a logic to trying this. I think the biggest challenges would be getting an insurance company to cover both of them, and finding a doctor to prescribe both of them.

They compete for brain uptake as they use the same transporter
