    A subscriber of mine, Big Scott, moved to Thailand almost 2 years ago. He sold everything in the US and made this huge move. We did an interview and soon became friends. It cost him a fortune. for an abundance of reasons which he will explain he is moving back to the US. Moving around the world is not for everyone. Scott's cautionary tale will be good info for someone who is on the fence and is only hearing positive aspects about Thailand and moving abroad in general. No where is perfect.

The safest way before embarking on that big plan to move to a foreign country to live permanently is to go there and rent a house to live for 3-4 years to learn the good and bad before deciding. Australian here. Born and bred in a town called Darwin.
    I have been visiting asian countries since the 80s. The roads are crazy, biggest vehicles have the right of way, its a madhouse. As for the heat and humidity, Darwin is in the tropics of Australia so the weather is about the same. But it grinds away at you. I'm retiring in a couple of years and moving to Perth. Great place, pretty much my second home already. Its descibed as having a Mediterranean climate, hot summers, mild, wet winters, but low humidity. And that's the killer in the tropics. When you retire, you definitely want to find that place you're comfortable in.

      My favorite vehicle is a 1970 Plymouth Fury. It was called a boat as well as a muscle car. I had one and regret ever selling it, but the roads in Thailand are not big enough for it. Plus the import tax to bring a vehicle in is horrendous.

    Overall good video. Sayed in Thailand 5 months a year 2000 - 2015, great times 😊 for sure. Had a simple appartment in Bangkok never brought anything more than a suitcase. Took a few language classes. Would stay a month or two then leave for a few months. In and out keeps your sanity. Bringing a dog, buying a new vehicle, renting a big house amateur moves. Stay light, always be prepared to move on in a place like Thailand. Bringing a Thai girl back to the US super amateur move, know the game. The tax discussion is a non issue for US residents. Include The Philippines in your program, more options always better.

      Traveling light is great if you aren't 100% sure you are going to stay there. I visited Thailand about a dozen times when I was in the military and gave Thailand some serious thought after I got out. I would have definitely waited 2-3 years living in country before ever making any big purchases. A house would have been something I purchased after getting married and had plans on having children. I think Big Scott had too much of the good life in the states and wanted to duplicate that life in Thailand. I think that was his biggest amateur mistake. You can't take America with you.

    Scott is so clueless about the proposed tax law in Thailand! Taxes will be imposed on "taxable Thai residents" on money EARNED overseas. His savings funds are monies that have already been taxed so it's not subject to double taxation by the Thai government. In order to be taxed on earned income overseas, you must have lived in Thailand for a number of consecutive months in Thailand per year. This proposed tax law was created to tax Thai nationals who are keeping earned funds in off-shore accounts and transferring them directly into their Thai bank accounts without paying any taxes.

    Things worked out well for me. I carefully planned my retirement. I came over in 1991 for a job in a joint venture factory. I was concerned regarding my retirement. There is no Social Security here. I was saving quite a bit of money working here because the company furnished a vehicle and housing including utitities. The Thai economy crashed around 1997 so that turned out to be the kick I needed to go back to the US for a good paying job. I worked and lived frugally in Southern California for five long miserable years. During that five years I was able to top up my social security account and build another pension. When I was financially able to retire at age 59, I cashed out the factory pension and at age 60 I started receiving a private small pension. I bought a decent condo for cash and at that time still got 51 baht for a dollar. My financial situation allowed me to wait for Social Security until I would receive the ful benefit. Now with Social Security and the small private pension I have a healthy surplus every month. I'm not wealthy by any means but I am able to live exactly as I want and don't need to live on a budget.

    One of the biggest problems i have with communication in Thailand is the literacy rate. You might have a translation app or whatever, but only about half the Thai people here can read their own language so it's still a big problem communicating here. Also is the question of people's intentions. Had a girlfriend that seemed great and not a gold digger. Long story short she ended up borrowing 80k baht and never paid anything back. The saving face thing is a mess because people will lie to you about anything if it makes them look innocent no matter how completely obvious it is they are lying.

    Im Asian Am from the PI. came to the US 45 years ago to work marry and raise two grown boys. We visit the home country occasionally because of my parents properties and to enjoy the tropical weather and culture. The reasons you stated for leaving are reasonable and understandable. Foreigners going the the PI probably have the same sort of challenges except for the language issue since English is a second language in my birth country. Maybe you can make Thailand a frequent place for vacation between your work schedules this time around but not a permanent address.
    I can relate to the extreme heat as well having not lived in Asia for a long time. But to me the most salient reason for me to stay in the US as a senior citizen is that as one gets older one should expect the possibility of health issues that will start to happen and Medicare will not cover except fpr emergencies. That means that once a year you must still come back here for physical check ups as well as stay if your health issues need monitoring. In my country every health care expense is paid in cash and sometimes before a doctor or hospital can treat you. thats a deal breaker to me. All it takes is one serious illness and your cash is completely wiped out.
    All in all this video is a great information hub for others who are planning to go to anywhere in the developing countries in Asia. Its always pragmatic to do your homework first, and be honest in knowing and accepting the good the bad and the ugly about the place you want to set up your next address. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, as the saying goes.

    Interesting reasons. None of them have been a deal-killer for me but others feel differently. My deal-killing problem is the absolute UNaffordability of health insurance here. I am 73 years old with quite a few preexisting conditions that make affordable health insurance impossible. The ever-changing visa situation is another minus for Thailand. They are obsessed with driving out all the foreigners who are not millionaires. Cambodia is looking like my best option.

      Health insurance can start to become expensive after 65. It really depends on your financial situation. I pay most of the medical bills out of pocket because they are usually, but not always, 1/5 to 1/10 the cost in the states. If you have some money then you may look for a high deductible policy that kicks in for a very serious medical emergency. That should bring the cost down, but pre-existing conditions are usually excluded. Right now medicare part b costs around 2k per year if you sign up at 65 and it pays 80 percent of allowed costs after the deductible. The copay cost in many cases is higher than the cost for treatment in se asia. It is 10 percent more each year you delay signing up for part b. Part A pays allowed hospital costs for 60 days after the deductible. Nothing is perfect and no best answer. if you have very bad health then look first a place that has good medical care at a low price. I doubt America will give you the best deal. Most se asian policies exclude the usa for a reason.

He isn't in any kind of shape and of course he probably breaths hard and sweets alot too. Odd are he isnt drinking water and staying hydrated and to stay cool well hello he is on an Island and plenty of ocean to swim and swimming pools to. Then after all that he says he has to go back to work. So why say anything else? Just say you have to go back to work.

    • @dlewis9760
      @dlewis9760 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That's the same anywhere. I've known a lot of people that retired in New England and immediately moved to Florida and sold it all. Then came back in a year or 2. They based their experiences on 2 weeks in February in a condo every year. Vacation living is not 24/7 and 365 living. Going from 20 degrees in the winter to 70 for a couple of weeks seems like you went to heaven. Which gets reenforced when you go back to 20. Then you find out what August is like. The guy mentioned the weather there in the video. I'd suggest multiple month long stays at different times of a year to see if something clicks. And possibly try different locations. For most, it clicks just fine.
