Hey guys! Max didn't mention, after unlocking your bootloader and the device restarts, *Don't set up any security*. TWRP will encrypt all the files and you won't be able to flash the correct files.
Nice to see you're still rooting devices unlike other channels! When I get my Pixel 2 XL (replacing my Nexus 6P), I'm following you're guide and rooting it!
Great video! Two things I would like to point out that I ran into that wasn't covered in the video: 1. For me, in order to get my gaming PC to recognize the Pixel 2 XL as a storage device, I had to go back to device manager, and uninstall the "Android Bootloader Interface", hit the "Scan for hardware changes", then MY PC was able to see the Pixel. 2. Because I have a PIN set up, I needed to use that same PIN when in TWRP or else all the files will be encrypted. Everything else was exactly shown in the video
KillerZero259 haven't yet. I'm remembering back to the s4 and G3 days where if you took a particular update, certain root methods wouldn't work. I know a Google phone is different, but I'd rather make sure I'm not going to screw anything up before I start
thanks bro, tried few weeks back with linux, gave me a lil issue.had to install the fast boot and twrp boot loader seperately. but at first i got pissed and gave it a break. tried again with the seperat install and i got it. thanks bro. also i think you the only totorial that has the setup for the linux. two thumbs up bro
Thank you so much! I ran into some problems but it worked for me at the end. The problem I ran into is that I didn't need to use the USB drivers. Apparently, I had the drivers already. Weird. The other problem was when I booted TWRP. It asked for a password. At first I click cancel, but all of my files were decrypted. When this happens just restart that step (Power Off, Hold Power Button + Down Volume, enter command, etc) and just type in the pin you use to unlock your phone. If you don't have a pin then this shouldn't be a problem for you. Anyway, thanks again.
Love these Root videos because of Max I rooted my HTC One M7 long ago. still watch these videos even if I don't have the device hopefully I'll get a Pixel 2 XL one day 😁
Thank you soooo much for your tutorials! They are the best and always helpful! Update: I keep getting a "Android System There's an internal problem with your device. Contact your manufacturer for details." How do I get rid of this and how can i restore my pixel to stock? Can you please make a video for this? I was Mac btw. Thanks!
I'm surprised you did not mention the critical unlock. It's a new feature specifically for the Pixel 2 and Google says: "For Pixel 2 XL only with loader version prior to TMZ20a: the critical partitions may also need to be unlocked before flashing. The unlock can be performed with this command, and should NOT be done on other devices/" Link: developers.google.com/android/images It should be: 1. fastboot oem unlock then 2. fastboot flashing unlock_critical XDA Forums discussion: forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/fastboot-unlcok-vs-fastboot-unlock-t3704406
Thanks for this video! Your method worked flawlessly. I saw you had some older videos about spoofing in pokemon go and was wondering if those methods still work?
Seems like an extremely well presented video - thanks! I have not yet done the deed but I most likely will. I have a question or two if you get the chance to answer: Why root without any custom roms being available yet? Id the TWRP image file the same as the stock image file? What backup method would you recommend? Thanks again.
You ABSOLUTELY have to use command fastboot flashing unlock_critical or you will not be able to flash a new boot image when reverting back to stock Android. I found out the hard way.
Rooting is similar to jailbreaking in that it gives you a level of control that the manufacturer never intended. Rooting allows you to make changes to the most critical parts of the system. You can block ads at the system level (not just web browser ads but also ads inside of games and other apps), makes UI changes beyond color and themes, fine tune the audio output, and gain more control over privacy. Rooting is not for everyone because you can easily fubar your device if you are not careful. But if you are the type who likes to have full control over every aspect of your phone, then root is the way to go.
Hey, I can't boot in twrp, it just won't work on the cmd screen. Every time I try using the command "fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-beta2-taimen.img" it fails.
Thanks for help. Question, what does it mean right after booting up. It says "There's an internal problem with your device. Contact your manufacturer for details."
krtek you're a brain-dead troll aren't you LOL. I didn't say anything about rooting being a bad thing. Just for some of us it's refreshing to have a phone that works almost flawless out of the box if it has all the features we need
If, when the phone is rooted, you change something in the system (which is usually one of the reasons to root), updating, OTA or any other way, could brick the phone. Which is why the uploader checks for root before doing anything, and "fails" (actually just refuses to run) if the phone HAS EVER BEEN rooted. (You can root, make changed to some system file, then unroot - and the phone will brick from an update.)
the main one people usually change is the recovery which is now custom one instead of the stock, you might still be able to receive and dload ota, but cant install it due to my first sentence.
Hey man, weird issue. When I enabled the bootloader I somehow lost the ability to connect to my PC without having USB debugging active. With USB debugging active I can connect and move the correct files to the pixel 2 8.1.0. When running the cmd line to root the phone when connected to my pc, however, the phone screen turns black and becomes unresponsive unless I hold the power button for a while. It boots normally and runs fine after that, but I don't have root running, just an unlocked bootloader. Did I miss a step?
Hi Max, I got to min 8.22 This is when you boot Twrp for the first time, everything was going very smooth, I have a pixel 2 xl, the devise showed unlocked status. Now, I know you said something about disabling the finger print, but I forgot and now I think that it is causing problems. When I did the setup after the first flashing/unlock, I recovered my data from the cloud, and it was quite a lot of data, and during this setup I entered my finger print and the phone enabled the feature. So when I did the second boot operation for Twrp it got frozzen on the twrp startup screen, as if waiting to be unlocked. It is a grey blackgroung with a blue arrow logo on the top center, and says Teamwin, Recovery Project 3.2.0-0 What can I do?? I have pixel 2 XL. This is my main phone. I'm freaking out right now. If I press the power button nothing happens. It has been 10 min since this and the screen is still frozzen. I need some help PLZ
is Magisk 16.4 compatible with android 8.1 or do i need to just upgrade my phone to android 9.0 before continuing? Currently I can only find Magisk 16.4
I cant install TWRP permanently. Everytime I install the zip file after booting into TWRP from fastboot, I get the "no command" window and the stock recovery. Even though TWRP installs properly from fastboot booting into TWRP.
My 'OEM unlocking' option is grey and says "Connect to the internet or contact your carrier". Stock Pixel 2 on Android 8.1.0. I ordered my Pixel 2 straight from Google. Any advice? Thanks!
Thanks for the video, everything worked great until the end. I flashed the command to get my phone into twrp, and my phone froze. I can't get it to turn on, and the screen is still frozen with the charging icon. Any help?
there is a user below that mentioned something about "command fastboot flashing unlock_critical" that will help with reverting back to stock. What does he mean by this?
+Max Lee Awesome!!! My kind of video."Backup everything before you unlock the bootloader,or else you'll cry😭 I don't want you to cry" lol good one Max👍😂
Max lee sir I recently flashed a custom rom on my pixel2 device and the rom is sum bug then I flashed android 10 factory image and relocked my bootloader after sum time I tried to factory reset my device I don't know what goes worng my device is now stuck on bootloader how I flashing the pixel 2 on bootloader locked state how?? Plz plz help me sir
Pixel 2: I can get up to the actual root part when i run the command Fastboot boot t********* etc, but the loader on the phone promps for a password, I bypass it and keep going but the files are not anywhere on the device according to the phone however when I look on the PC it is there (when connected ofcourse)
Guys I have an issue with cmd , it's doesn't find fast boot but I did download it and extract it it says "he system cannot find the path specified" please help
Ugh, I love my pixel but this phone is so frustrating in this regard. Literally first thing he says is "make sure you backup everything, as booting will erase everything". Welll the entire reason I even came here is because I wanna backup with Titanium, since Google/android's backup systems are woefully lacking on their own. Oh well, guess I'll just lose all my app data 😭😭😭
hey guys can anyone help mangaed to unlock the bootloader no problem, but now trying to run the fastboot boot twrp command and it keeps failing, any ideas?
I’ve been stuck on the teamwin page for about an hour and no change anyone have any help? I saw a forum that said it doesn’t like passwords and stuff so I’ve removed everything and all my accounts and it’s still sat in the same bit?
Will this work on an original Pixel Verizon branded with OEM unlock greyed out?! OR is there another way to root, or bypass network provisioning check?! Thanks all :-)
If you setup the phone with security after the wipe that occurs after unlocking the bootloader, when booting into TWRP, it will ask for the passcode. Use that passcode that you've created to unlock TWRP. From there follow the instructions and it should work
Can you help me .? I have a pixel XL the first one. Last update the volume changed. I am not able to fix from system developer. It doesn’t keep the new valúes. Do you know another way or how to save the new valúes. I increased them but still don’t work. Thanks
Been rooting with you since S3 days Max.... You make it easy to understand with your walkthroughs. Thanks always!!
Hey guys! Max didn't mention, after unlocking your bootloader and the device restarts, *Don't set up any security*. TWRP will encrypt all the files and you won't be able to flash the correct files.
great tip
If you type in your pin when TWRP first opens, your files will be unencrypted
Nice to see you're still rooting devices unlike other channels! When I get my Pixel 2 XL (replacing my Nexus 6P), I'm following you're guide and rooting it!
Good video man. I felt more confident watching through this than I did reading through the XDA guided. Thanks!

KillerZero259 just out of curiosity, did you take the 8.1 update before rooting?
Sam, no, I didn't
KillerZero259 Thanks for getting back to me
Sam, are you trying to do this on 8.1?
KillerZero259 haven't yet. I'm remembering back to the s4 and G3 days where if you took a particular update, certain root methods wouldn't work. I know a Google phone is different, but I'd rather make sure I'm not going to screw anything up before I start

its not work on 8.1. then the phone tell me that: There's an internal problem with your device. what can i do ...
IF YOUT TWRP SHOWS A BUNCH OF RANDOM FILE NAMES, MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF ANY SCREEN LOCKING PIN/PASSWORD/ECT.!!! Great Video by the way
1 year already so i will root my Pixel 2 XL.. thank for ur help.
"And.. BOOM SHAKALAKA!" 😂😂😂😂
thanks man! Helped a ton! Still works on new 8.1.0 by the way
Kk thx will update!

Rod Just Yes
Thanks Max, I was able to root my Pixel 2xl with no problem by following your instructions.

Yes you need it for flashing firmware but not a required step for root.
Thanks for this video! Your method worked flawlessly. I saw you had some older videos about spoofing in pokemon go and was wondering if those methods still work?
unlocked bootloader, install twrp, and it freezes on the teamwin recovery project screen. tried several times now. need help
Thanks for making that easy to understand!!
woks very well! successfully rooted, thanks!

working on Pixel as well. Thanks!

Yes!
bro u might've just saved my phone bless ur soul
so what do i do now that i didnt use that command and just did what the video said
jas1088 you can run the command as long as you haven't changed anything.
thanks for the heads up
What are the benefits of rooting? I’m new to the android ecosystem

If others are having an issue with the command "fastboot flashing unlock" NOT working, try "fastboot oem unlock"
Thanks for help. Question, what does it mean right after booting up. It says "There's an internal problem with your device. Contact your manufacturer for details."
i cannot decrypt data and my phone doesnt accept my screen password to decrypt.. can you help me please?
So, the OEM thing is greyed out and I can't use it
This is my first Android phone that I've had no ambition to root
Mark W dude we don't care. It's needed.
krtek you're a brain-dead troll aren't you LOL. I didn't say anything about rooting being a bad thing. Just for some of us it's refreshing to have a phone that works almost flawless out of the box if it has all the features we need

You seem off a little bit, take some anti stress pills, it'll even you out buddy :)
Can you miracast a pixel 2 xl with this root??
Could you show how to do an OTA after rooted. Thanks.
it doesnt owrk

done everything according to the video. magisk app keeps crashing. really annoying

Max. I'm fairly new at this. When you say "create a backup" can you show me how that's done please?!
What will happen if i factory reset my phone while ive root ????
hi Max, can we downgrade android 8.1 to 8.0 on pixel 2xl? if yes, is there any difference in doing it compared to downgrading on nexus 5? cheers! 🍻
When im in cmd and i type cd fastboot it gives me this message, "The system cannot find the path specified".
Verizon pixel 2 bootunlock method is super easy and should allow this root method right???
at 8:21 mins of the video... Im stuck at the teamwin Logo what do i DO?
same did you ever find a fix?

I’ve been stuck on the teamwin page for about an hour and no change anyone have any help? I saw a forum that said it doesn’t like passwords and stuff so I’ve removed everything and all my accounts and it’s still sat in the same bit?

Jacob Dupuy hope your warranty is good.
guess who cant unlock the OEM
Ok, I figure out my problem from last night. However, when I run TWRP, it doesn't find magisk or taimen etc... Is there a trick I am missing?
If you setup the phone with security after the wipe that occurs after unlocking the bootloader, when booting into TWRP, it will ask for the passcode. Use that passcode that you've created to unlock TWRP. From there follow the instructions and it should work
will there be any way to root google pixel 3 android 9.0?
Does this method work for Android P (9.0)?
Can you help me .? I have a pixel XL the first one. Last update the volume changed. I am not able to fix from system developer. It doesn’t keep the new valúes. Do you know another way or how to save the new valúes. I increased them but still don’t work. Thanks
