    You got two Arabian nights? Man I couldn't decide between thst one and canterbury collectors edition. Got the canterbury but I'm still very envious of all the illustrations in the B&N one.

    Sorry, what's the difference between Grimms Fairy Tales and Grimms Complete Fairy Tales?

    • @readernat
      @readernat  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think that the grimms fairy tales has some but not all of their tales but then the complete edition has every story!

      I'd also recommend that, book design aside, if you want an accurate translation of Grimms' Fairy Tales, don't buy the Barnes and Noble edition. The translation is hit and miss in multiple places, as the translation wasn't done by one person. It's compiled from different public domain translations of the stories, some taken from Margaret Hunt (most accurate public domain translation), Lucy Crane (very close translation, and flows better than Margaret Hunt's), and Edgar Taylor (who was notorious for removing many of the less child-friendly details from the stories), anong others. And the stories aren't even in the right order, which might seem like a minor point, but if you're a Grimm Fairy Tales fan, you know that it's a big deal. If you want an accurate translation, I recommend either the complete Margaret Hunt version or the Ralph Manheim version. It might also be worthwhile to check out Jack Zipes' recent version, which is actually a translation of an earlier draft of the collection that had numerous differences.

    Sadly, this collection is a sad testament to our made-in-china era. The leather they use is actually bonded, meaning it's an amalgam of glue (80%) and unusable pieces of leather (20%), ie. as far from the real thing as Chicken McNuggets are from a chicken. The ribbon is plastic, not silk, and I have my doubts about the smythe method they use. So sad, because owning, for instance, the complete works of Shakespeare, is a one time family purchase and cheating on the materials is just a sin.

      Frank Ellis firstly, I have to say that I'm not immune to the allure of these B&N volumes, having just ordered the "flexibound" edition of Dracula. A friend showed me her copy about a year ago and I thought how nice it would be to have something other than my fourth or fifth paperback edition on my bookshelf. Despite the eye-catching (and, honestly, sometimes eye-assaulting) designs and graphics, I'm aware that these aren't truly quality editions of some very beloved books. What really bothers me about these volumes is how many videos I've watched on YT where the reviewers not only seem more concerned with the presentation, rather than the content---the only real reason to even purchase a book---but they also haven't really actually READ any of them, nor do they seem eager to do so any time soon. There are many books I would love to have beautiful, lasting editions of, but I have paperback or Kindle versions of most of them, and that's the most important thing: access to the actual works and a desire to consume them.
