So we did just that! It takes on the new to the channel Makita GDT01Z impact driver and Milwaukee Gen 3 2853-20 to see how they stack up. Is the 850B stoo small to make a dent? is the GDT01Z just an XDT16Z in different clothing. Boy do we find out!

      could you have accidentally left the makita in speed three and not speed 4? i admit the control panel is a bit confusing, and if i remember the speed three is like 32 hundred rpm with top end being 36-37 hundred.

    You should market yourself as an independent third party testing facility and become a national standard for this type of testing! Would be great to see a TTC (Torque Test Channel) sticker on the side of an impact driver someday. I'd actually trust the numbers on the box at that point.

    • @TorqueTestChannel

      We've actually done some testing now for a small number of manufacturers/factories who wanted our feedback under the premise they realize we're never going to show it on the channel per our rules about free samples, and that they take the tool back when done. Haven't quite figured out if these requests are due to the graphs and power over a run we can generate here or because we've tested every major impact wrench out there right now and they can see that performance comparison instead of buying the $20k worth of tools themselves.

    Upgraded from an older 18v kit. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

    By the way, I have my impact driver as a multi purpose do-all tool for things from carpentry to appliance repair to driving lag bolts, but I probably use it the most doing automotive work. I mostly like these little tools because they can get in there and turn off those long winded bolts really quickly. Even if I have to break the fasteners loose with a breaker bar, then hit them with this the rest of the way out, it really saves me a ton of time. I never was interested in the 1/2 or 3/8 cordless impacts I had used years ago because they weren't putting out any more torque than these little guys, and they couldn't do anything else. My interest in them wasn't piqued until I saw your videos on the newer ones that are rivaling some of the best air impacts out there. Since I've already got the batteries, you've really got me thinking about one of these cordless Makita impacts, because I really do hate having to wrestle with the air line, and with the socket going directly on that tool mandrel, a lot more compact than even my cordless impact driver. I think one of these things is in my near future.

    The Makita was in its highest setting 5:18, we usually test the top few options to make sure. In wood where these are usually employed, impacts-per-min would close a lot of the gap here until they are up against something one driver can move and the other cant, like the tight bolt here. This one tool by no means makes XGT tools "trash", on the contrary it's the 1st one we've seen that isn't a massive standout. Stay tuned to see more. Mode 4 screen grab: i.imgur.com/nPHMxzj.png

    I bought the Makita 40v a year ago and I absolutely love it. I’m in construction and I’ve used it for everything from drywall screws to large grk and lag bolts. The trigger is so soft that you can feel everything and use it for very delicate work such as mounting hinges on doors as it only impacts when it meets heavy resistance. To me an impact driver doesn’t need to be crazy powerful, if you want torque for large lags then buy a small impact wrench🤷🏼‍♂️ I’ve used both dewalt and Milwaukee and they don’t come close when doing delicate finishing. Also the new batteries get you over twice the battery life.

      @UClF12X2oBJ-ay6gAZxum2vA I don’t think you understand what makes a good impact driver, it’s not all about power, they don’t need to be anymore powerful. There are impact wrenches for a reason. Once you try all 3 and have to use one all day everyday, the little details become much more important.

    Surprising results. I have owned all of those impact drivers except the Dewalt, Flex and TD172 (own multiple XDT16’s). Milwaukee punches harder than any Makita, so much so it often backfires with insta camouts. But I have not at all had the experience that the XGT is less powerful than the 18v counterparts (TD172 is very close to TD171). In fact, the reverse: the motor is larger, the gears are larger and the hammer is larger on the XGT and 10” long GRK’s notice the difference. XGT wasn’t here when I still owned the old and new “Freak” models, but the XDT16’s ran circles around the new one while a toothpick bundled up with masking tape was a more competent impact driver than the original. You showed the control panel in the video and it was set to maximum torque. Knowing Makita’s consistent QC (and, really, only smaller niche companies ship QC inconsistencies) with their products from the inside out, I really doubt they shipped one any different than the one I own. So, my question is, why are my experiences not lined up with the test results? Makita has the least amount of runout by a large margin and with the XGT being at the top. That has something to do with it I suppose. But what else? Would love some input.

  • @pilotdog68
    @pilotdog68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    A few times now you've asked about "if the spring and hammer/anvil are unchanged, can 40v make a difference?" and the answer is that it certainly could. The power of the impact is determined by 1. Mass of hammer/anvil, 2. Leverage/diameter of the same, and 3. Speed of the motor.
    Every time the hammer smacks the anvil, the load on the motor spikes and the RPM decreases, then it has a tiny amount of time to speed back up for the next impact. Higher voltage could theoretically help the motor power through that load spike without losing so much RPM. It could also give them the overhead to put in a heavier spring for longer sustained blows.
    That said, the performance here of the Makita is strange. They possibly could be electronically limiting it, or perhaps the performance was already being limited by something other than loaded RPM so extra voltage changed nothing.

    • @TorqueTestChannel
      @TorqueTestChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yup, solid points. We wonder though on a motor and hammers the size of this impact driver if that RPM was already even a limiting factor. On bigger tools, it must be fore sure. Although using a heavier diameter spring or different hammer to pair with it would be ideal, and for the +$100 premium XGT gets you'd hope so.

    • @lwilton
      @lwilton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TorqueTestChannel Did you use the same adapter type on all the tools? I was idly wondering if maybe the adapter on the Makita had some extra spring in it that was absorbing some of the impact. Something certainly looked like some sort of hard limit. If you didn't use the same adapter type, I'd for the heck of it give it a run with the Dewalt adapter just to see if anything changed.

    • @Doktoreq
      @Doktoreq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would argue that most limiting factor is socket adapter (basically a torsion beam). Increasing moment of inertia on one end of the torsion beam leads to torsion beam twisting more. Speaking simply: if you put a big ass socket on a thin (and long) adapter, the adapter will twist robbing you of your precious torque at the bolt. It hurts more when you have low torque / high rpm tool like impact driver.

    Can you guys compare brushed vs brushless from the same company? Like the milwaukee 18v brushed impact driver vs brushless impact driver. I assume brushless is quite a bit better, and I suspect the M12 brushless may be close to the M18 brushed? And of course do the other major brands as well.

    • @Patrick-857
      @Patrick-857 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no comparison. For one, these companies haven't developed any brushed tools for years, so brushed tools are out of date models, the other thing is that brushless will destroy brushed every time.
      Brushed tools won't be around much longer. The dirty secret of brushless is that it's cheaper to produce. Economy of scale has kicked in with brushless, but it is waning with the brushed tools. They still make the brushed models, but only because the biggest investment is in R&D and setting up the tooling to manufacture them. Once in production, there's no sense ending production unless they stop selling. But to make a new brushed model? Why on earth would any company do that? It's old technology, and it's dying rather quickly.
