A good way to prevent ice dams on your roof is to string De-Icer wires. They heat up and cut valleys through the ice to allow the melting water to drain off your roof. Although they should be installed in the summer. Of course it also depends on your roof and where the ice is forming? The first few weeks if this winter in Michigan was hit pretty hard with lake affect snow. I'm kinda glad it melted.
I agree! The lake effect snow was intense! I have the heat tape up, we were able to install it because we had the snow melt, I was happy too, its like a redo. my roof needs so much work, insulation and ventilation - in the spring it is the first thing!
Nice vid Marie. I feel like I'm hanging out with you when watching. A tip for you while living up here is to get a remote starter for your car if you dont already have one. Leave yor heater on medium and it will be nice and warm for you when you leave.
hi James, awe thank you! that is a really good idea, It's really cold already and it hasnt been fun starting the cars haha. Thank you for watching and I hope you have a wonderful evening
You got me into snowshoeing. Wanted to try last year but got lazy. Looking into picking up soon. Im just south of Buffalo NY and the snow here is measured in feet not inches so ill see how it goes. Great vids. Al
hi Tom, I don't go tent camping alone here because of the bears and moose and the cougars so I get what you are saying! I like to do car camping in bear country
HI MARIE, my name is tom and i am born and raised in Calumet mi. in the U.P. and you have really nice place there . OK u do not have to be afraid of the woods, the bears can smell u and hear u from a 1/4 mile away and they will go in the opposite direction of u., there not like a grizzly bear. One nice thing about winter is u can"t get lost in the woods because u can follow your tracks that u made back to the house.😁😁😁
hi Tom! so happy to connect with another person in the UP! wow, you are born and raised here, thats amazing, I am very impressed with Yoopers, this life is not easy in the winter. good to know about the black bears, that does make me feel better. and you are so right haha about the woods and winter, it is good to be able to follow my tracks back!
Yes , they will come near you but they tend to avoid you which sometimes when you're both avoiding each other you end up joining each other again. You can smell the bear if they are near you as they smell like a garbage can. You can go to Oswald's Bear farm North of Newberry to see the gang. You may see more wolves than bear Never been attacked by either in the woods when meeting them.
@@UPdan each time I see the black bears they are running away and they aren't close (which i guess is a good thing) but I haven't been close enough to smell them, good to know
Ask most anyone. If they've been out walking around and a black bear, sees them what the bear did? They always go the other direction. Usually pretty fast too. unless it's a sow with Cubs, you have nothing to worry about. On ice daming you'd be best off to install heating cables to melt the snow in the bottom 3 ft of your roof. Should you ever need a new roof, consider getting a steel roof as that eliminates ice damning all together. Welcome to the north @@marieintheUP
When the snow melts in the spring, before the grass starts growing would be a better time to clean up the broken glass. Just be very careful with the edges, using rubber coated gloves really helps.
yeah I think I have to wait, I realized I would be digging around in the snow for glass, so going to wait and good idea on the rubber coated gloves when picking up the glass!

@marieintheup In 1995, I lived through 5’ of snow in 2 days. My mom didn’t go grocery shopping, so we were living off corn beef hash in cans. Good stories. Our fun was to shovel the roof. You should buy TrailHeads Women’s Convertible Zip Mitts. I love mine. I’m just down in Illinois, so it’s cold, but sans snow. Have fun!
hi Frankie, i checked out your youtube channel and i am going to watch some of your videos, I like that you are taking things you already have and fixing them, some cool info on snow blowers too. Thanks for watching!
Hi. We have those hand warmers rechargeable they work great. Ocoopa from amazon. Three years ago we went with a metal roof (it needed to be done) it was well worth the extra cost the snow slides off of it after every storm once the sun comes out. Live in N.H. so we don't have as much snowfall as you .
hi in NH, Ive been to Nashua and its a charming little place. yes, thats the brand- from amazon! I really want a metal roof, i am going to have to make a change for the next winter season, dealing with the snow and ice on the roof is not what I want to do. i do have metal roofs on the log cabin and my garage and the snow isn't sliding off (I think because of the daily temp changes where its melting and then refreezing) and i'm hoping the snow will start to slide off those roofs soon as it stays below freezing.
Keep the snow dug away from the heat pump so it can work at maximum efficiency. If your propane furnace is sidewall vented keep the vent pipes clear of ice and snow. Fine blowing snow will ice up the air inlet.
Living in the woods is great but people need to be prepared for everything you need to have a good 4x4 locked up food water candles firewood extra clothing blankets, I play in mountains really deep snow I do for fun and experience been doing that for 45 years
If you’re like my wife and I, the Amazon snowshoes will last about 2 years and get you hooked! Then buy yourself a set of Tubbs. For the clothes, I really like my duofold base layer, under Eastern Mountain Sports soft shell pants. I got a pair of Merrell boots that have a bump where the snowshoe strap rides, and some great over the calf socks. We do a couple miles of field hiking, or snowshoeing, with our dog each day. Haven’t found the right gloves yet though. Enjoy!!
Your roof should be built strong enough to hold the extra weight of the snow load, so there shouldn't be any worries about that. Look into a metal roof if yours is asphalt A metal roof the snow slides off
hi Jason, yeah I think it needs to be cleared after there is 3 feet of snow, but it can hold a lot, the issue with the snow is that I have ice dams and a little water leaking already from an ice dam (I will make a video soon about it). I am working with some roofing companies to have a new metal roof installed in the spring. I have shingle currently and its only a few years old but has issues from ice dam damange. thank you for watching!
It looks like you could use more insulation in your attic, I think the heat loss in the attic is causing the snow melting on the roof and the ice dams as it runs down the roof, but I am far from an expert. Good luck, you defiantly are not afraid of work.
thanks! yes, i think i am going to have a whole slew of spring tasks, I am going to have my insulation looked at to see if i need more and I am looking into metal roofs, and heated gutters and maybe heat tape (not if I get a metal roof) only if I opt to keep my new shingle roof.
After I snow rake the roof, I take the snowblower and remove the snow rake off from the ground. You have to create room for more snow rake off. There's nothing worse than those mounds of snow going through a few thaw and freeze cycles turning them into hard pack ice.
Read "walking with bears" by Terry DeBruyn to learn best about Michigan black bears. Nothing to fear. Respect Mother with cubs by giving them space if seen. Otherwise they'll steer clear of you and you'll rarely see them even though they are abundant and know where you are well before you you come up on them.
I'm glad you bought this book Marie, you will enjoy it. It is on the dry side as it's a scientist that thinks like one but he incorporates enough entertaining memories that it's good. It truly was my most eye opening read on the subject, plus you'll learn a lot about other things in your backyard from the book too. ... Good job with your videos and dealing with the snow 👍
If you look around in every room, if there was damage from leaks in previous years, you'll see discoloration in the ceiling sheetrock, or whatever, and at the top of the walls. If there's none of that, then you could worry about it quite a bit less. The log cabin is so steeply sloped that I wouldn't even roof rake it at all.
I chekced and no damage and the roof is pretty new on house, the ice dams are over the overhangs and thankfully not on the part of my roof that is over my house rooms if that makes sense- so I think I need gutters and some heat tape on the edge of the roof around the house. thank you for the information, it does help me worry less!
I have to know, what do you see? I do carry a weapon just in case. I havent seen many animals in my yard but my cameras pick up bear and deer and little critters but i feel like there has to be so much more.
@@marieintheUP Your yard is YOUR yard and most predators respect that...to a point. However when you enter their yards you are fair game to them. Wolves, coyotes, bears (mainly black), the typical. They will see you before you see them, cougars are known to stalk, wolves will surround you. Having a dog or two is also a great deterrent plus their keen sense of smell will be better than yours. Talk to a local game warden for your concerns, they have tons of info.
The heat loss should be done before you do anything with the roof! Adequate insulation and proper venting and you should be set....aside from raking your roof as needed.
Don't waste your time cleaning the snow off the cabin because the pitch of the gambrel roof is safer and has less chance of the snow caving in the roof like your house would. Be safe
