    Really enjoy your content on the U.P. My wife and I have an off-grid house near the Falls; on a lake that has access into Lake Superior. You’re right about the cell service and internet. Best of luck.

    Hello Marie. I was a caregiver for my Mom for 17 years. She passed this year from Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She was 92. I had to give up my job at the American embassy in Budapest and return to SWFL. This coming May, I am moving to Delta County/Escanaba area in the U.P. (I never liked FL). I need to live in the quiet and gentle beauty and spirit of the U.P. I admire your perseverance, work ethic and can do attitude. I also admire your love for your parents. Many people do not realize how taking care of elderly parents can be very challenging at times. I applaud you! I wish you and your loved ones good health, peace of mind, prosperity and genuine happiness for the coming New Year. Please take the very best of care.

      @@spudnikkx1112 There is a saying in Florida. Florida has two seasons, hot and hotter! I have spent over a month travelling through out the U.P. I also lived in in SE Michigan for years. I relish the difference between Florida and the U.P. I plan to live off grid. My biggest concerns at this point are the price of propane and DNR management of the natural resources. Your points are valid and much appreciated! Happy New Year!

      hi, I am sorry to hear about your mom passing, that must have been a journey where you cared for her for 17 years, she was lucky to have your help and love. Its hard to make career and other changes for our families but worth it, your job in Budapest must have been amazing! I love living overseas. congrats on your move to the UP, Escanaba is a wonderful area, the lake views are great! thank you for your message, it helps me to connect with other caregivers, its no easy thing thats for sure. happy new year to you!! keep me posted on your move, very excited for you!

      @@marieintheUP Marie, thank you for the kind words and good wishes. I do look so very much forward to moving to the U.P. in May! I had over 10 years in Germany and Hungary. So glad to be able to retire to the U.P. though! Hopefully, I will be able to purchase 20 or more acres and be an hour or so out of Escanaba. Also, I want to be living off the grid as much as possible. I see a great deal of wood processing in my future. Wishing you, your parents, Scruffy and Violet all the best for the 2025!

    Hi Marie! I have been up here for 18 years now. Around the Trenary area. I also retired early and have had the best years of my life up here. Have had my property about 38 years now. I'm on a river which is pretty nice. Lot of hiking area. I had all those roof problems when I got up here also. Up on the roof shoveling and roof raking. Got a metal roof now and it made quite a difference. I wouldn't ever have asphalt shingles again. I really like your videos. Keep them coming. You have a nice place. Take care.

    Good for you we all have an expiration date and it's important to take time for ourselves. Unfortunately in adulthood most of us get into debt whether it be a large mortgage, car payments and even credit card debt and it keeps us tied to jobs we're often unhappy with. We end up working longer than we should, we all hear the stories of he or she passed a few years after finally retiring. I believe we should all strive for better (I certainly realize easier said than done, especially without a high income/pension). Wishing you the best on caring for your parents, I realize that is a job in itself dealing with care issues, insurance companies and trying to safeguard what they worked their whole lives for. They're lucky to have you.

    Hi Marie! Welcome to Michigan! I live in Northern MI too, but south of the bridge. Regarding all of the plowing...we ended up just recently getting a UTV with a plow attached to plow our driveway. It is heated and is AWESOME!! So something to think about getting if you plan to stay here. I still have to shovel our deck, porch, and trails in the yard for our small dogs. I saw one person mention bringing dog treats with you when you are walking and that is actually a good idea. People up here let their dogs run free (even though there are leash laws in MI) and multiple times I have come upon dogs running at me and barking. One farm near me has 2 German Shepards and they are very scary...one time we got past them when on a walk and then they came in the road and would not let us pass their house to go home, so I had to call my husband to come and pick us up. So for sure I recommend walking with dog bones, mace and a knife. I also carry bear spray if I am walking my dogs with their stroller, I just keep it in the pocket of the stroller and it works on dogs/people too. Anyway, looks like you are conquering the winters up here and are doing a great job!

    After having lived 'in the bush' for more than 45 years, encountering any sort of wildlife can be disconcerting, and dangerous. I have found that carry a pocket full of dog treats is the best way to avoid confrontation with wildlife. If the wildlife is small it will retreat, but if the wildlife is large, a handful of dog treats thrown on the ground or the snow will change an animal's focus, from you to the dog treats, giving you time to 'move away'. Stay safe.

    It’s nice of you to open up about your life. My wife and I visited Sedona once and loved it. I do a lot of cooking but it’s very basic, I’m a very picky eater. A meat and potatoes kinda guy. I love to grill and cook with charcoal. Thankfully my wife is a fantastic cook. I have just a very basic trailcam, it’s a Trail Hawk by Stealth Cam I believe ? It’s a lower end thing, battery operated but it works. We get deer, coyotes and other wildlife. Plus if any nefarious individuals were going to sneak onto my property the wooded area provides the best cover. Also ring doorbells. Ok now I feel comfortable asking you a question. So far has your TH-cam experience been what you imagined ? Happy New Year 🎊

    Caregiving is a very important and necessary job. My niece was a caregiver for my parents until they passed. We have an older trail cam (2019) which needs to be updated. I don’t remember the name brand but it was about $80. We do see some cool wildlife for sure. Haven’t seen a cougar yet but I’m sure one day we will. We live in the woods too a ways out of town. We didn’t have hardly any internet until we purchased Starlink. Now that is some fast internet. ♥️

    Great job taking care of family while still being able to semi retire in such a beautiful area of our state Marie! As our older family members age we all should try and look out for them and help as much as we can. I am the youngest of a large family that is slowly getting smaller, so I understand where you are coming from. You helping more than some people are able is something to be proud of and I am sure is greatly appreciated by your family. It always great to see deer out the window. In winter they like to hang out in cedar tree thickets for the browse and to keep warm. This will also bring in predators which are definitely something to watch out for. Especially small pets. Game cameras are great and even the cheap ones are very good these days. A friend bought a security camera that is not cloud linked. (I like that!) It records HD video for 30 days to a laptop and everything over 30 days gets automatically deleted. I don't remember the brand but i think it was a Scandinavian compay and was a couple hundred dollars. I like to cook simple thingsand fish or chicken is a favorite. I make a dry mix of Progresso Italian bread crumbs and parmesan cheese with maybe a bit of pancake flour or corn meal in a 1 gallon zip lock bag. Soak the meat in milk or egg first if you want or you can do without. Put fish chunks in dry mix bag, zip and shake. This works well for oil frying, baking or air fryer. Just tilt the pan in the oven a bit so the water that comes out can drain from the meat. Have a Happy New Year all!

I bet that is hard being the youngest (I am the youngest too). good to know about the deer, I was thinking, hmmm is that what the cougar is eating and why it is around right now? I am going to have to try that progresso Italian bread/cheese recipe, I think the fish would be awesome in fish tacos, thanks for your comment, I appreciate you! cheers to the new year!

    Great life story, though I am from the Midwest, "Go Blue" (though I went to Notre Dame), work and life provided many great opportunities. I've resided in "Cali", Portland and Seattle, Florida as examples, but Michigan has been home. I rehomed a cat, which was a first. I Maine Coon, "Max", he was 35 pds., followed by rehoming a dog, a Miniature Shar Pei, she's the most incredible dog (it took me app. 5 years to do so following the passing of my beloved pet), chili needs a "dash" of sour creme on top, nice garage, just needs heat, and yes, just takes time. Not only is it against the code, but the insurance co. would frown, so I installed a furnace. I sleep good at night. This is state wide, not by county or city/town. I just looked it up for Michigan, and it's the same. State wide.... no wood stoves in a garage. (NFPA 211) I know some states they are allowed if raised 18" or above, but Michigan is not one of them. I was wondering if security cameras would be a better idea, we don't get much sun in the winter here but maybe I could find one with a good rechargeable battery, i just think the cold temps will drain it. are you in a sunny area?

    • @erwinaddison2030
      @erwinaddison2030 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I live in the northeast and my solar cameras stay charged ok. I don't have cell service at my house and rely on Wi-Fi calling also. I recommend getting the battery backup for router and modem in case the power goes out you will have cell service. Do you take a vitamin D supplement? Up here in the north we don't get nuff sun! Sorry if I'm being nosey..sometimes I go into grandpa mode😃

    IF you have AC power, you can install a wifi extender between your router and camera. Or put your router near the window and see how far your smart phone can reach it using a Google browser. If you run an extension cord out to an extender that far, you can probably have wifi connectivity twice that distance.

    I make a very spicy chili, so you can use the cheese to tone down the spice some. Also I make a thinker chili, and I get Frito s scoops and eat the chili like a dip.
    The most important thing is that you take care of yourself, and your family. As long as everyone is healthy and happy, that is what matters. As far as the trail camera is concerned, I am of no help with that. I would just suggest that you don't buy anything real expensive, because I don't think it is necessary.

    Hello they are a cellular camera along with not needing to use the cellular part. I know you said that cellular is an issue in your area!…….. you can use AT&T or Verizon and the lowest monthly payment I believe is $5.00 a month if you choose to go cellular. I hope this all helps? Pictures are able to go to your phone

      HI, If I understand what you are saying, I can use a trail cam that has a cellular plan, because all I need to get the pictures from it, is to have a att cell phone? if so that is awesome, thanks!

    • @gregbehrens7559
      @gregbehrens7559 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The reveal Tactacam cameras are cellular able and you can choose AT&T or Verizon which ever gets a better signal in your area but you don’t need to have your cell provider to be either of those companies. You wouldn’t need to use the cellular part it’s there if you choose to purchase a monthly plan to have the camera pictures sent to your phone without going to the camera all the time to see what the pictures are. But if you prefer to go to the camera to remove the SD card then you don’t need to use the cellular capability. I hope I explained this better for you? Have a Great day😊

    I 'retired' after graduating highschool; meaning I only worked enough to take time off. I supported three kids and their stay-at-home mom. The trick is to live below your means and not spend money on unnecessary things. If I did buy something, it had to have value and durability. Now I am nearly 70, and have personally owned 200 various vehicles, have a bank account, live on city acreage, own a 3 year old car, and still feel retired. I will start collecting pensions in 2025. More money! yippee.
