I'm fortunate to have a metal roof with a pretty steep pitch. It just slides off. If you need to get a new roof and you choose to go with metal, the colored panels will eventually fade from UV rays. Mine was originally brown, but now it's a dull tan. I recommend a lighter color like gray or silver. Reflects heat in the summer and doesn't fade as bad. My two cents. As a fellow Yooper, I love to watch your enthusiasm. Proud of ya. Keep them coming.
hi, happy to see you back and hear from you, I appreciate your kind words and that information about the metal roofs, I will def go with a lighter color, good info on the fading and the reflecting heat. I like the silver color, it would match my little log cabin roof. thanks for your two cents! hope you are doing well
@newtotheUPMarie silver sounds perfect. 👌 Oh, another thing. I enjoy when you chat away on your videos. Don't be afraid to leave that in. I know you probably think that no one wants to hear it, but I enjoy it. Makes it more personable, I think. You inspired me to post a short "snow plowing" video the other day on my channel. My brother in Nevada may have watched it. 😆
@@Yooperglide I just watched your short on your awesome plow! that looks like a lot more fun that what im doing with the snow blower haha. im jealous. you know you are right, I take out my ramblings a lot because I feel like no one want to hear that chit chat all the time but I will start leaving it in more. thank you for the feedback and for letting me know about your short you posted, you did a good job
I see someone else commented on this but you only need to shovel a roof where the snow weight is a concern. Ice dams form in the valley's and roof edge overhangs. So with a roof rake you can safely clean the snow off the roof perimeter (about 3 to 4 ft up from the eaves) without going up on the roof. This is really all that's needed so the ice don't dam up in these areas. Keep an eye out where the icicles are forming as those are the areas for concern. It is important tho to rake the edges before the icicles form, unfortunately after every storm...ugh. Be safe and keep warm. You'll be a pro in no time! 😊
Hi, its nice to talk to you again. I understand, but I have ice dams and they are causing leaks into my home. So I have to get the snow off the roof and I am having a company come out to remove the ice dams. I have a roof rake but it wasn't getting any of the snow off because the snow was an icy crust so it couldn't grab it. Im waiting on my minnesnowta Razor, I think that will be helpful this winter and you are right, i have to make sure to rake after every storm, it's so much work lol. thank you so much!
More comments from a 70 year old. You do a good job with your videos and I enjoy your enthusiasm. If you can tolerate latex, use latex gloves as a first layer. Then put on your regular gloves or mitts. The latex will prevent your sweat from soaking the insulating gloves. Your hands will stay much warmer. This won’t keep your gloves dry from snow, but they will still be warmer. If you can’t tolerate latex there are other materials. You can do something similar for your feet. Someone probably sells waterproof socks but a cheap alternative is bread bags or food storage bags in a gallon size. Put them on your bare feet and slide your socks over them. Although the roof seems strong, cold shingles are very brittle Don’t sit or walk on the peak. The shingles might crack. It looks like fun to slide off the roof, but this puts strain on the edge. You can probably get away with it now, but don’t do it once you have a new roof. Learn about the dangers and symptoms of frostbite. Wear a face mask or other covering that will protect your face. Before you have a new roof put on, make sure the insulation is sufficient. Ice dams form when warm air escapes from the house through the attic and melts the snow on the roof. The melted snow runs down the roof until it hits the overhang which is colder and it freezes into ice dams.
hi Ron, happy to hear from you again and wow! yes I have latex gloves and that is an easy fix, thank you so much, I never would have thought of that! I am only doing the sliding and stuff because im going to get a new roof next spring, i want a metal roof, and where the heat tape is, there is a lot of shingle damage already. otherwise I wouldn't have gotten up on the roof, I know just walking on it in the wrong shoes can cause a lot of damage. I got so wind burnt that I wont forget a face covering again in that cold of weather, my face is not happy. im going to have insulation/ventilation and all that looked into thanks to all the great advice ive been getting from you all- I hope you have a wonderful day
Young lady, you invested in a roof rake; USE IT!!! For those ice dams, look for a product called Calcium Chloride. It's less corrosive than rock sale and you can toss it up on the roof from the ground. Treat the first four to five feet from the lower edge. We're living vicariously through you, please keep the vids coming.

You are learning as you go and you have a great outlook and attitude. Just don’t overdo yourself. I am the same way, i hate paying people to do things i feel like I should be able to do. but wow am I thankful for some help because this snow is no joke. 1:04 In 1977 there was a Blizzard in Jefferson County NY. It shut the City down for 4 days. We walked to the grocery store with a tobogan to transport the groceries. During that storm there was so much snow that we could jump off the porch roof into the snow and climb back up the snow pile and do it repeatedly. Another childhood memory in the snow.
@@newtotheUPMarie I can relate to much of the work you are doing. It is interesting to see how you tackle the challenges. Plus no one around hear listens to my suggestions. LOL
We have a picture somewhere of me, my brother and my sister all under 10 years old simultaneously jumping off the roof into the snow which was about 4 feet deep.

Ventilation in the attic/roof is the key. Heat that escapes the house through roof is why ice damns happen. Maybe metal roof with 2x4 as purlins between existing shingles and metal roof is the answer
hi Bob, you are right, I need to address both those things and I really want a metal roof, im hoping I can have one installed in the spring, thank youf or the information about the purlins, I wasn't aware of that. hope you are having a good day!
On my mom's house, I used a small snowblower to blow the snow off the roof tide a rope on it and thou it onto the other side so if it slipped out of my hands I could grab the rope so it fall of the roof. MARIE,your doing a great job!!
your snowblower fell off the roof? did it make it, or did it break? I almost brought up the electric snow shovel and I just felt like I wouldn't be able to be safe with it. thank you for the encouragement, it means a lot
Like the famous line in ‘The Graduate” invest in a metal roof next time -(not plastic). Also, when I lived in Petoskey for about 10 years, we had heating cables on the roof in a v patten that we plugged in and they melted paths through the ice dams in the gutters. If they are not band by the EPA or some other group maybe invest in something like them. Good luck stay safe, and yes I did fall off the roof a couple of times but into 8 foot snow drifts. LOL.
I am for sure getting a metal roof, the previous home owner put the shingle roof on. they use the heat tape here too, its a good thing your falls were into 8 foot drifts, thank you!

I got a lot of water damage one year and had roof heat coils installed during the summer in preparation for the coming winter. It has been a life saver. Not having to worry about ice dams again. I think it is definitely worth looking into and safer than getting up on a roof in winter
that is a bummer you had water damage, but its awesome you found a solution that works for you! for next winter I will be prepared, thanks for watching!
Hey there, cute videos! I recommend a snow float! They can move a lot of snow with very little effort. I’m in Sault Ste. Marie on the Canadian side! It’s a beautiful place to live! Enjoy
hi in the Soo on the Canadian side! I have never heard of a snow float but im going to look it up right now, thank you for the information and you are right, the UP and Ontario are amazing
Your best bet, I think, is to fill stockings with ice melt or rock salt and place them on the roof. BTW, any way you can shovel snow off a roof without breaking any bones is a good way to do it. You are doing great.
I agree thank you! I have heard about the salt in the stocking, I am having a company come take care of the ice dams because there is now a water leak, water damage happening
@@newtotheUPMarie I made the comment before I finished the video LOL. I was also going to tell you. Insulation is a big job but you can do it yourself just by buying one package at a time and just slowly cover your attic crawl space saves hiring someone and you learn a lot along the way. Insulation generally comes in bats about 6 feet long just wear protective clothing because it is not fun if it gets into your skin or eyes.
@@chipsdad5861 no worries at all, yeah, insulation is something I have considered tackling but im not sure yet haha, I wanted to test out my insulation skills in my garage first but thats a project for another time.
@@newtotheUPMarie Don't leave it until hot weather. Working with insulation in summer heat, in an attic it just as brutal as working in the cold. Winter is actually the best time to put insulation in the attic. Just and FYI, I know you have alot going on just keeping your head above water.
You’re ok, don’t let anyone tell you different. The farther along this journey you get you may find your vocabulary gradually changing over from the citified to the more rural one, an example would be, instead of saying I feel empowered after spending all day clearing snow off your roof, you may stand on top of it and yell, Hell yeah, I’m one bad ass motor scooter. Bravo.....neighbor! Well sort of. I wouldn't venture up there to my place in that weather. But kudos to you on your new channel (that I just discovered) and the move up to the UP. Best of luck on your new venture. Stay safe and Happy Holidays. Oh, and if you keep shoveling that snow off the roof, you won't have any views out your windows shortly. When I used to go up to my place this time of year, I would use a battery powered 'snow shovel', but once it sets into ice, not much can help.
hi sort of neighbor : ) I am happy you recently discovered my channel, I am really enjoying living in the UP. I realized that a bit too late about the no view out the windows, now I know I need to shovel the snow off the roof, then shovel/plow/snow blow the snow from the roof else where, it only took one week for it to get out of control. I love my electric snow shovel, it does work well, but like you said not when its ice. Happy Holiday's to you as well!
A tried-and-true method that's pretty much inexpensive is the old calcium chloride ice-melter filled socks, long socks, like knee-socks are recommended. Fill the sock up with ice-melter until you have a relatively large sausage-looking filled sock, then tie off the end of the sock and place the filled socks lengthwise with the pitch of the roof in the area where the ice dam forms. The obvious best time to do this is before the ice dam forms but this is effective on existing ice dams. The working theory is that the ice-melter in the sock will, over time, dissolve and prevent an ice dam from forming or, worse case, it will melt a channel through the existing ice dam to let the water drain off of the roof before it finds a way inside the house. Calcium chloride ice-melter is safer to use than rock salt and it works down to a lower temp, it can be found next to the rock salt at Walmart. There's enough knowledge out there on the web to safely say that ice dams form because of 2 conditions, insufficient air flow from the eves to the rest of the underside of the roof and insufficient insulation at the eves allowing the snow to melt and form that dam and the water behind it. Just an FYI to keep in mind just in case a contractor decides to take you for a ride, financially. FWIW, I'm a fellow Yooper that winters downstate ;-)
hi, thank you for all that information and hi fellow Yooper! I'm starting to understand why so many leave the UP in the winter, its so much work with all this snow lol. I do need more insulation and I think a metal roof. I have heard about using the calcium chloride and I know a lot of people use it up here but i am very hesitant to use because it can still be damaging. I'm not sure what the best route is but im working on a solution
@@newtotheUPMarie You bring up a good point! For those with metal roofs DO NOT use the calcium chloride sock method, calcium chloride is corrosive to metal. Asphalt shingle roofs with NO exposed nails is pretty safe from the sock method, and rubber membrane roofs are pretty much immune. I would worry about gutters if you have them, even though they are aluminum, they still can corrode. If I was to become a full-time Yooper, I'd be addressing the same problems you're facing, good luck with your endeavors'.
You have so much snow its fun to slide off. About 4 years ago I was shoveling my roof above my front deck that I had just cleaned. Slid off the roof. Luckily it was near the edge of my roof so I came down on the outside railing and then down onto the ground that had a couple feet of snow on it. It was about a 12 ft drop. Just a little bruising.
oh no! I am glad you are okay! I was worried that may happen to me but thankfully the only sliding off was intentional on my part. thank you for sharing!
I alternate working inside and outside. I get very hot with the fire inside so when I go outside to shovel or cut wood or take the dogs out the cold feels good.
hi! what kinds of dogs do you have? dogs are awesome. that is a great idea, I need to force myself to take more breaks, I actually got pretty cold up on the roof but didn't realize it until i stopped working and went inside, then I was like oh no. oh too long outside not good. I ended up getting a yooper scooper from Ace Hardware the plastic one. It moves more snow and you really do not lift it you just push it. I really dislike clearing when the snow has formed a crust. I was lucky that it warmed enough to remove most of it this round but it is metal and no ice dams. Ha Haaaa that cold sure put the rosie on your cheeks Marie
its hard right when its all icy on top, no fun. I do need to get a yooper scooper, I think it will make my life a bit easier. im glad you aren't having to deal with ice dams, I can't wait to have a metal roof. I know, my face got wind burnt or something, it hurts so im going to start wearing a balaclava but you are right about my cheeks getting rosy in the cold, thank you for watching!
You really don't need to clear a roof off unless it has about 3 feet or more of snow on it or it is a very old house with a poor truss system. Most of the more modern homes in the UP has very strong trusses designed for heavy snow load. Maybe yours is an old house. Also, avoid using a snow shovel to clear a roof, especially if you are going right down to the shingles. It can damage the shingles and that will shorten the life of the roof and roofs are very expensive to replace. A roof rake is better and you do not have to scrape it down to the shingles. If you are getting ice dams, that is due to the attic insulation - usually not enough of it - that causes too much heat getting to the roof. Its not just from snow load.
hi, im not sure you have watched my other videos or this video in its entirety based on your comment. I do appreciate your feedback and the information you provided. thanks for watching!
Hello marie. Be careful on that roof. One slip up you mite brake a leg or arm. If you have to pull snow off the roof use that roof rake with that long pole. Its alot safer. Play it safe. If you ever need help i be glad to help you. Well take care and merry christmas to you. Joe.
hi, the roof rake wasn't getting the ice down (the snow was all icy on top). I have a leak coming into the house down the wall from the ice dam. I removed the snow to keep additional snow melt from sitting on my roof leaking into my house. I am always safe! Merry Christmas to you as well

hi John, from what i have researched about those pucks is that they are very damaging and don't actually clear the ice dam. low pressure steam is the best way
Hi Marie, would you be able to carefully use your electric shovel on the roof to clear the snow? To me your roof doesn't look like it has much of a pitch to it. I was wondering if a metal roof would help to prevent ice dams? I know that they aren't cheap, however you might receive a discount on your homeowners insurance, and the metal roofs last a long time. Happy Holidays to you.
hi, all good thoughts and questions. I thought about. my electric shovel but its heavy and I worried about getting it up on the roof, and the snow was ice like and the electric snow shovel struggles with that. Happy Holidays to you as well!
Removing snow from the roof is not a good idea unless there is over 6 ft of snow on top of the house that would make the roof collapse. This small layer of snow works as insulation and heat retention. It is not only unnecessary to remove the snow but is also very dangerous . It take only one slip to end up in a hospital. 34 years living in Alaska and lots of snow removal. Once I got older I switched from snow shovel to ATV with a plow. Before you have a new roof put on, make sure the insulation is sufficient. Ice dams form when warm air escapes from the house through the attic and melts the snow on the roof. The melted snow runs down the roof until it hits the overhang which is colder and it freezes into ice dams.

It's less corrosive than rock sale and you can toss it up on the roof from the ground. Treat the first four to five feet from the lower edge. We're living vicariously through you, please keep the vids coming.

You are learning as you go and you have a great outlook and attitude. Just don’t overdo yourself. I am the type of person who can do a lot of things and hated to pay someone to do what I felt I should have done. As I get older I realize that needing help isn’t something to be ashamed of. Also I noticed you wear a lot of Columbia gear. I love their clothing, it’s quality made and reasonably priced. If I can give you a piece of advice it’s “baby steps “ . You will get there. Merry Christmas 🎄 Marie
I am the same way, i hate paying people to do things i feel like I should be able to do. but wow am I thankful for some help because this snow is no joke. I have to force myself to take breaks and hydrate and warm back up inside. I love Columbia gear, like you said, good quality and its not crazy expensive. In AZ I lived by a columbia outlet and really got great deals. you are right about the baby steps, I am very slowly getting there, next winter i think i will have a much better process. Merry Christmas to you as well!

I really love how you edit your videos. The music you choose flows very well 🎶☺️
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays 🎄🎅🤶
thank you Kurt, I appreciate you saying that, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you as well!

Another entertaining video! Merry Christmas 🎄 and a blessed and prosperous New Year to you🙏🏻

hi from NH, love it there, Merry Christmas to you as well!
Bought one of those "avalanche" type roof snow removers that have the tarp/slide. They are awesome!
I think im going to set a timer on my phone so i have to stop working and go inside.

Your hat and scarf looked like a bag of skittles lol. Love the editing, really nice.
that makes me happy, I love candy and bright colors, tahnks for watching and thank you for your feedback on the editing, ive been working on it
You really don't need to clear a roof off unless it has about 3 feet or more of snow on it or it is a very old house with a poor truss system.
I have had a couple friends take a fall off the roof and now paying the price with broken bones with pins and screws in there ankles and legs. You have to take care of number 1 and thats you.
Merry Christmas to you as well
Snow on a roof... Looking at your roof a series of 3 -5 low yield dynamite set off at the same time will simply avalanche both's sides in seconds. Wa la...all done now you can grab a hot chocolate and nap. Oh, you got a house under that................forget this idea. Good Luck M! ☃
hiya, omg you made me laugh so hard, I know right, that dynamite would make quick work of removing the snow, and everything underneath too. have a good one!
Safety in all aspects. From driving to shoveling the roof. Hard Work & Cold are Both Heart trying. Freezing and falling are dangers that come with Winter. Any chance that you could damage the roof shingles from your going to town with that shovel like that? I remember hearing from somewhere that shingles can get damaged even by tree branches falling on them.
there is a huge chance I can damage the roof shingles just by walking on it, they are more fragile when its freezing temps. I'm saying don't do what I do, but i'm going to do what i feel is best with the information and tools available at the time, thank you for watching, hope you are well!

hi John, from what i have researched about those pucks is that they are very damaging and don't actually clear the ice dam. low pressure steam is the best way
Hi Marie, would you be able to carefully use your electric shovel on the roof to clear the snow? To me your roof doesn't look like it has
much of a pitch to it.
I will be getting a metal roof as soon as i can get a roofing company to install on, but that won't happen until after the winter, i will look into the discount for it on my home owners insurance, that would be awesome, thank you for watching and for the advice.
Best investment I have ever made. 600cc ATV would do just fine plowing driveway. There r videos on how to waterproof anything with candlewax and mineral oil.
