I am in Awe. I think my mother is the lady in the fur coat at area number 133 on the tape. She passed away when I was young and this makes me very happy to see her shopping with her friends. Would love to have the picture of her. Kathy Gardner-Heun.

Great stuff, glad you know the year on this as the cars certainly look like 1948 and earlier along with old style buses. Thanks for posting

Thanks for sharing this! It was great to see how nice Elmira was back then.....I was born in 1950, but didn't move to Elmira until 1956...........wonderful days.....wonderful memories.

I am more or less a born and raised on Long Island
We just stayed at Horseheads just west of Elmira for a couple of days to go up to the races up at Watkins glen and the state park
I said let's go drive around
Elmira and check it out… I absolutely loved the city even though it's a real dump now but I can see that it was once a beautiful town. All the old buildings parks and statues and all the houses and college
I hope everything starts looking better for the upstate region.. very historic and beautiful past
Great video, just as I hoped it was

WOW, what Elmira was like when I was only 2 years old. Why did it all have to change. Even though it was old, it was our beautiful Elmira all gone because of a lady named "Agnes".

for sure, I grew up in the 60's and early 70's-- not much changed, until the splash. Still had the hustle and money spent downtown. Lots of good times!

Absolutely amazing to see my once gorgeous, prosperous & booming hometown of Elmira before the bastards destroyed it. So sad & powerful. Shows what Elmira once was & could one day once again BE if it had great intelligent leadership.

I wish Elmira was still a nice city. Those days are long gone, I'm afraid...

Ohh yeah I remember reading in the history books back in my high school days about that creepy santa craze that was going around in the 40's.

I love this, except for creepy Santa. Wish I knew who the policemen were. My Dad was on the force at that time.

There were less cars in the average family I think.

Yes Jason, my dad took this when he was 15 years old as my grandfather drove him around town.

I'm developing a documentary on the relationship between Elvis Presley and his hairdresser/spiritual sponsor, Larry Geller. Larry was born and raised in Elmira until the time of these home movies. His parents had to move to Los Angeles because the harsh winters in Elmira exacerbated Larry's asthma. I would love to be able to use some of this footage for that part of the film!

I can do better than that! If you're okay with it I'd like to pay you for the usage rights, and give thanks properly in the credits of the film to both you and your father!

This is what Elmira looked like before welfare. Good people every where you look. A city that had pride and people who were happy. I don't see any drug dealers on the street either. Men married to women and families, no freaks. We can go back to those days very easily . But you will have to get a job and take care of your self, not the government doing it for you.
