The biggest thing to remember is Ren isn’t just a rapper. Doesn’t do just hip hop. He has never categorized himself as one either. He loves hip hop and it plays a big roll in a lot of his music, but overall he’s an artist. He’s a singer/song writer just as much as he’s anything else. He has said hip hop is fun for him. An escape from the heavier stuff that he writes. Hip hop is where he can have fun and so he does. You, like many, are catching Ren during is “rap” phase. He has said he’s always wanted to do a hip hop album, and that’s what he’s giving us right now. He has said after that hip hop album drops he’s moving away from hip hop. So folks better enjoy and most importantly appreciate this side of him before it’s potentially gone for good. A lot of what he’s released over his career has been based off his health and mental state at the time. Many songs are time capsules of some of his most challenging times. The reason so many people connect with him on a personal and spiritual level is because his music has always bared its soul. “Hi Ren” is the perfect song to understand a massive amount about the man. If you don’t know who Ren is yet, then I’ll simply say you just haven’t listened to him enough. Keep going. For hip hop tracks, “Genesis” and “Power” are great tracks where he talks about himself. If you want super fun bars on bars for a wild fun time of wackiness “Losing it”.

There's a certain percentage of people in the hip-hop culture that are not okay with, and take offense to people just dipping their toes into hip-hop and not fully committing to it. And even if I don't agree, I can completely understand why; hip-hop is not just a genre of music, it's an entire culture and one that's heavily guarded. I think Kso is one of the people to an extent. You either are hip hop or you're not, and if you're not, then what are you doing here? Ya know?
Again, I'm indifferent to it but I'm also not a part of that culture or a protector of it, but I do get it.
I think Kso is just looking for authenticity within Ren's music. Doing a hio-hop flex about things he wouldn't actually ever do is not authenticity and I get what he means by that. He needs to see some of Ren's rap songs that are actually about him like Power and Genesis. I'm honestly surprised he liked this one to be honest. I've always thought this to be Ren's most "word vomit" song, using Kso's words.

My thoughts on all this are that he may stop for a time, possibly a long time. But it would be extremely unusual to completely abandon a style he is obviously extremely talented at. He’s also definitely spent a lot of time practicing to get this good and he loves it. So I would be really surprised if he never did it again.

    • @rbbea
      @rbbea ปีที่แล้ว +5

He’s not just dipping in and out though. He said himself that he started producing beats and writing lyrics at a very you age and actually rapping himself because he couldn’t find anyone to do it for him where he grew up in Wales. If you listen to his interviews he says this and also understands the roots of hip hop

"Poison in my veins" is a reference to the Lyme disease I believe. "Lights a flame in my brain" is indicative of the inflammation and pain the virus caused him. Much of his music revolves around the illness and the misdiagnosis that he went through for years. His story builds in every song. He tells his story in most of his music, at least in some aspect. I'm actually surprised no one pointed you towards this one sooner. Power is probably the song you're looking for.
Ren actually does a lot of busking (street performing), both solo and with his former band The Big Push. He also did a lot with Sam Tompkins. There are a lot of videos of him performing on the streets with massive crowds.

Thank you for not keeping your mind closed to Ren’s music. His fans are not zealots (usually) and most are totally cool with someone having constructive criticism as long as they are listening closely and being respectful. The best part of Rens music is that it opens conversations. You get extra points from me because you have had your opinions, but you were open to having those opinions challenged. The Hunger- REN
    Poison in my veins
Lights a flame in my brain
That maintains the pain that may change my frame of mind
    Blind I design rhymes
    Intertwined, double time
    Genuine frankenstein
    I made a monster
Conquer music scene, golden ticket Wonka,
Conjour, lyrics in my belly I got thunder
Younger, everybody wishes they were younger
The older I’m getting the more I feel the hunger
Belter like a welter weight helter-skelter need alka-seltzer
Alpha, beta, delta I help you into the fall out shelter
Melt a mind or two with my rhymes you might find you never felt a
Feeling like this feeling be believing I’m a daemon I’m a devil
Fuck the game, completed every level I’m a vessel
For spirits to channel out of my lyrics I’m a devil
I raise my fist the anti-capitalistic pissed I revel
In society collapsing, fantastic now pump the treble
Tick tock off the top of the tip of my tongue I am tapping telepathy
Terrify them with the terrible telekinesis tantrum yes I torture the enemy
Slowing the flow and then growing the flow and I swallow the flow like a Toblerone
Im a beast with the flow, I’m a feast on the flow
Then I’m ripping it up and I’m taking it low
Kiddie with a black heart in a car park by Primark
    Jamming Django Reinhardt
Living like a rockstar refine rap to a fine art
    Vincent Van Gough I start
    Making my mark
    Like Frankie Sinatra
    King call me Arthur
And my style is homegrown like growing cali weed
Don’t need no personal trainer I got trainers on my feet
You know I got the soul in my bowl when I eat
You know I’m staying grounded when I grind up my beef
But if you got a problem my brother I might just put on some rubber gloves
And just choke you till larynx ruptures and blood it just bubbles up
And the bubbles just double up and you struggle but luck is up
Cause I’m subtle at covering up the trouble
Cover up the crime scene, 1990 that’s my scene
My teen years were spent rolling the Thai-green
Obscene fiend in a pair of baggy jeans
Putting backy with the green roll a fatty dopamine starts flowing
    My cerebellum glowing
    The pendulum is slowing
Im swinging and I’m swaying but I don’t know where I’m going
Mind running jessie Owens, hallelujah Leonard Cohen
All these seeds that I’m sewing slowly growing like trees
    I grow then I preach
    Scrap that I teach
    Teach over beats
    To all those that seek
    Teach on these streets
    Streets can be bleak
But bleak was the place where I rose to my feet

You disliked Hi Ren, which is very much his story. You can also here his background in Power. Sick Boi was also very autobiographical. As to what he eats? He follows strict Paleo as that is all he can eat due to his illness. He has a day in my life short that shows his current truth, which would help you understand Genesis bars “neuropathy begging surgeons for a lobotomy” for example. He puts his truth out there and people dismiss it as word salad.

Based on what you were saying and wanting to hear next, I'd check out his song Genesis. EDIT: Actually, even more so on a personal level of his life I would say react to Power.
He definitely has a story, and it is consistent throughout his music; getting Lyme disease but being misdiagnosed for years and it destroying his mind and body, his best friend committing suicide at a young age, him growing up around hippie/counter culture groups in the UK (which is why there's a lot of Ska/Reggae influence in his music), but certain songs go into it all more than others. Ones I'd check out are:
    Power
    Genesis
    Humble
    Ocean

In regards to the pig he leaves that up to our own interpretation BUT he has said he's a huge fan of George Orwell's book "Animal Farm" and the pigs in that book become corrupt with power and greed. He has not divulged the exact symbolism to himself - but enjoys leaving it open for interpretation- he also enjoys the guesses fans come up with. I tend to think it represents greed monetization of the human experience.
The poison in his veins - could be the Lyme Disease he suffered misdiagnosed for 7 years. Or the meds he was given for illness he didn’t have that led to stress psychosis. Additionally I could refer to the treatments he has to endure to treat his auto immune disease. He never wanted his art to be defined by his illness. Ironically his music/ channel took off when he dropped Hi Ren ( which is about his disease ).

Ren’s music has been literally honed on the streets. He has spent the majority of his life below the bread line and physically/ mentally unable to work. He has a big following in Brighton, England where he was busking (street performance) for many years.
If you watch his (and his band the Big Push) busking videos, you can see that his fans were originally young urban ferals and hippies.
Now that REN’s blown up though, he’s gained a huge following of people aged 50+ as well a good range of other age groups. A group of 15 year old black teens in my husband’s school (in a isolated rural community) were raving over Ren the other day so he put on a selection of Ren’s back catalogue and they were wild over it.
I don’t understand how you’re missing what Ren is saying about his life throughout his work. I have noticed though that you tend to miss things because you’re distracted by your own thought or words. Maybe that’s why you’re not able to hear what I’m hearing.

Based on the context he keeps using the pig mask (although it's left open for interpretation), most likely is used as a symbol to reference the pigs in the Book The Animal Farm. After the animals revolt against the humans and take control, the pigs rise to the top and act as oppressors towards the other animals.
The symbology is how our own greed and gluttony are always present .hat's my guess.

I think a lot of us Ren fans are not really rap fans. Not all obviously, so we don't really understand Rap from a rappers perspective. So when we recommend tracks we don't fully understand what you mean when you say this isn't rapping, because to us his clever word play and rhymes IS rapping. I also think that many rappers don't see the deep hidden meanings in his work.
In this for instance... Jesse Owens was a sickly child whose mother performed surgery on him because they couldn't afford healthcare. Django Reinhart was so badly burnt that they recommended amputation and said he would never play an instrument again. Hallelujah was rejected so many times and took 10 years to complete. Van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions... All of these references were specifically picked as they all overcame adversity to become successful. They all had 'the hunger' Just as Ren has done.
So us Ren fans see the intricate designs of his rhymes that many others do not see. Its sometimes corney on the surface, but has a deep meaning behind.
I think some of the negative reactors don't want to see past the surface.
So Thank you for explaining what it is you want to see from Ren. And thank you for sticking with him and seeing his potential. He really is a lyrical genuis, you just have to sometimes work for it!
I would recommend, Power, Genesis, Penitence, Dominoes, Insomnia...mot of his older tracks to see who he is. And for pure 90s style fun...What you want!

I agree … I think people should have recommended The Hunger much sooner.
If you want the track that gives more insight into Ren, I would recommend “Power.” And as a bonus, you will see one of his creative collaborators behind the wheel, Samuel Perry-Falvey, who filmed Hi Ren, The Tales of Jenny & Screech, Hunger, and others.

Check out Ren's song Genesis! It's about HIM and his struggle with his illness. Also his duets with Chinchilla, the LIVE versions of Chalk Outlines (his mental illness) and How To Be Me (his friend Joe's suicide) are also incredibly moving and real.

  • @WitsEndGirl

Not sure we need to convince you. I see a shift in your openness to what Ren does and I think it's you and Ren that's doing that. Just keep listening to his back catalogue and if you like, then you like. If you only like the odd song then that's OK too. The Hunger is one of my favourite songs. I think there's a very broad demographic for his work. I started watching and listening to ren some years ago but a lot of people have just found him and discovered that they like his style of hip hop and rap and have often gone on to try more current hiphop. Many of those people are 50+. I think I love his work because it reminds me of the old school rap and because I love English and European folk music and he is definitely influenced by that too. I like the honesty of your reactions, I hope you find the song that helps you understand Ren, I'm here for that.

  • @L0rdL0ki

Much respect for the fact that you came back and gave Ren's music another shot. I made some judgements about you in your first reaction - comments that I felt were made in ignorance, and I clicked off the video early. You've changed my mind with this reaction - not just because you're "on my side" now, but because even your positive comments are made with the same flair.
You're a real one. Your style is sometimes hints at obnoxious and "in your face", but you're honest and real and I can respect that.

I'm loving your reactions. I'm one of those musically challenged and love when people feel the music and can explain why it is that I like it or, why it works.
I feel Ren does say a lot about himself, just not all in one song. What sounds like fantastical lyrics to us might be some thoughts that run through his head. Ren has said that the dark voice in his head was always very loud and prominent

Ren dont have a public target per se......he aim to the heart....his music its open....he raps, he sings, he can do folk e can play multi instruments...Ren make music to be apreciate to every "palate".
I'm from 1982 and i can apreciate Ren because he can take the Reggae and Ska inflences that i grew up listening listen and give a twist... i love that....then he takes that Reggae vibe and put some "beastie boys" on mix, then he start fresh and pick some EDM from late 90 and give some hardcore Rap, then he twist and turn and put some "Fat Boy Slim" with some old School Rap.......Ren dont have a demographic public, he makes public to the Mom the Dad and the prick Kid :) enjoy on the same moment .... he talks about that on the interview to the Black Pegasus

Ren wouldn’t hurt anyone or thing, that’s what I get and at least physically. Ren is a 50/50. A true hybrid.
He grew up in a small town pretty much in the middle of nowhere so had very little access to anything really. He wasn't wealthy but he wasn't poor though he did come from a working class background in a place with very few jobs or prospects, he then moved to brighton where he mastered his trade on the streets and practically lived on the streets. So he's experienced many sides of the coin and because of that he seems to appeal to both sides of the coin. His talent is what kept him above water and away from true poverty but he was often balancing on the edge.
I think that's one of the unique things about Ren he doesn't fit in any category and yet appeals to every category.
You did this song justice and you obviously have a lot of knowledge in hip hop structure.

the authour of 1945, George Orwell, also wrote a book called 'Animal Farm'... considered a classic novel.. One of Zen's Favourites. The Pig head that shows up is a tip of his hat to that book. The songs with it explore concepts also explored in that book... just to explain the pig head.

The pig head is a very English reference, from Lord of the flies to Animal farm and plenty in between, it is attached to those who suck up to power. The cop pig, the three little pigs, the greedy pig... Pigs are symbolic
