    What a superb sound! I loved the richest of the lower strings and when you switched to metal - it was incredible. Question: Given the choice, do you now prefer playing the electric violin on a fretted or fretless fingerboard?

      after having a couple of years with a 6-string fretted and a 7 string fretless I can say I have practical uses for both but I still like the feel of a fretless , although Frets definitely have their place especially in a live band setting playing with a band full of other fretted instruments.

    What amazing playing! At first it sounded like a whole string quartet to my guitar orientated ears, then when it went metal, you realised Jimmy Page only scratched the surface at bowed playing. You need the extreme curvature of the fret/fingerboard to make it work. Still, beautiful on all counts and sincerely thank you for showing us what a good tune you can get out of an old fiddle!

      What does fretted mean?

    • @OurMagicalNature
      @OurMagicalNature 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fretted means that the instrument has frets. Frets are those small, slightly elevated bars that divide the strings into seperate notes at a pretty exact pitch when pressed.

      @FuzzyFiddler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      check out at Ithaca stringed instruments by Eric aceto. I don't know if he would do a fretted fingerboard but he builds amazing acoustic 6 & 7 strings, and also a hybrid acoustic-electric that is his design

    I just read one of your comments. I dont understand the purpose of a fret. The Fstring and Cstring is such a wonderful addition. Soon we'll have the range of a doublebass or Piano its amazing ! All kinds of new intrval and doublestopping, double note possibilities ! A7 string instrument is beyons belief but in comments you say its so.Please put a video on show us tuning and such and can we take g,c,f, and Bflat strings to other pitches .I forgot Italian term for it .

      @@FuzzyFiddler Thanks! I love my Arcus P5 and was wondering in particular how it would pull out the sound on the lower strings. I get the feeling it would probably work just fine. I'm lucky enough to live about 10 minutes away from John Jordan (went to him for repairs and bow rehairs back in the day). Might have to save up some money and go check out a 6 string...

      If a person can't play violin, having frets isn't going to necessarily help them. The frets are flatter than on guitar and you place your fingers on top of them instead of next to them. If you don't know the notes or haven't developed the correct muscle memory in the first place the frets aren't much of a help. Most fretted violinists use their frets as a visual aid for patterns and a way to feel the fingerboard, especially in settings that make it hard for them to hear themselves. Frets are different but not necessarily better or worse. Frets don't fix everything and playing electric violin has its own set of challenges. A player still has to know what they are doing and how to use their equipment to the best of their ability. It's not cheating.

      I've been playing guitar for a little over 20 years, with no violin experience at all. So you're saying that I can pick up a fretted violin and instantly play like that because I don't have to worry about any of the basic required skills? Awesome! Sounds like I just picked up some new gigs!

  • @lemau8458
    @lemau8458 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If those were real frets, you wouldn't be able to do vibrato.

    • @FuzzyFiddler
      @FuzzyFiddler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, have you never heard a classical guitarist execute vibrato?

    • @lemau8458
      @lemau8458 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they move the string in each fret, not up the fretboard, because that's impossible on a guitar

    • @FuzzyFiddler
      @FuzzyFiddler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's funny because I can do it. I encourage you to go to Electric Violin Shop and try them out. They're not only real frets, they're jumbo frets. And yes, slides, vibrato - wide and tight - are possible. Open your mind. Also, why would I lie about having frets? To what end?
