What this video doesn’t mention is that the wood used for bows, pernambuco wood, comes from a specific tree called the brazilwood tree (the national tree of Brazil.) The problem is that the brazilwood tree is now endangered and is nearly extinct in most of its original region. The trade of pernambuco wood is likely to be banned in the immediate future, which will create a major problem in the bow-making industry which highly values this wood. The International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (IPCI), whose members are the bowmakers who rely on pernambuco for their livelihoods, is working to replant the trees. IPCI also advocates for the usage of other woods for violin bows to raise money to plant pernambuco seeds.
The whole ethos of colleges is flawed, since everything is about a uniform standard of mediocrity. 80% will get you an honours degree, but imagine going on to design 100 buildings and feeling proud that only 20 of them collapsed. Or how about working as an airline pilot and only crashing once a month. Working to 100% standards every day of your life is difficult for most students to fully comprehend.
This is the same with all instruments. Luckily Violins/Cellos/Guitars sound better with age. A luthier is such a valued proffesion. As a life long musician (Guitar/Bass/Mandolin/Piano) i can appreciate an incredible instrument. It's why I pay hundreds for strings alone. I spent 2k on restoring an 1971 Martin steel string to restore perfect intonation and full body sound. I paid over a thousand for custom wrapped pickups for my 67 telecaster. As a musician you continuously seek the best sound.
I think good technique and practice will get you farther than good instruments. You have to evolve as a player and get an instrument that matches where you are in your musical journey. A sloppy player with a 1971 Martin will sound worst than someone who practice regularly, has a good technique and play on an intermediate level Yamaha.
"Professional bows/players have their bows redone every 3 months." 2 Cellos looked at each other and said "Thunderstruck?" New bows please after they finished tearing it up. Have you seen those guys tear up a bow in minutes? :D Bloody good job they are earning top cash for their musical skills, as I bet that shit gets really expensive. =D
Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but the hair also usually comes from a stallion instead of a mare due to their anatomical differences... the mare's tail hair gets routinely soaked with urine.
Who rehairs their bow every 3 months? I’ve never heard of that Edited to add, I do not mean that people don't or to imply disrespect or disbelief, just that I, as a beginning student, had not heard of it.
That's a shorthand. I've also heard 150 hours of playing, which is more of my guideline. I extend it to 200 but I really start to notice quality around month 4 when seasons dramatically change here (around april and november). If you live some place with big changes in humidity you'll need to be more on top of it, since wrong-length hair will force stress on the stick if it shrinks or you have to tighten it too much. I've maybe met one or two people that adhere to it, but they're travelling and playing all the time, probably dealing with lots of humidity changes.
Paubrasilia or the pernambuco wood is a endangered species, it take so many years to grow and it's illegal to buy/sell. People buying, using it's most likely a illegal logging
There's NEVER a morning that you wake up, and go, "Damn...I have to go to work?" *QUE!?!?!? DAMN...I WISH I HAD YOUR OPTIMISM, BUT MANY OF US HATE OUR JOBS!*

Neat!.... learned alot about violin bows.... didn't realize how important it was ... just as important if not more as the violin.🙂
@ 2”35’ Do not hammer the wedge into the frog on the table top. Hold it in your hand!
i’m from Mongolia and when i was buying my 300, nearly 400 dollar instrument i thought it was weird that the hair was listed as specifically Mongolian horse hair
I purchased a a 1950 violin I didn't say the case was 100 year old German duck house weigh more than the violin and the case. it has made in Germany.
Great video ❤❤
It's on my channel
A less popular profession, the artisans have a precision skill to make these Violin Bows.
What a fascinating process!
im sorry if this inappropriate, but, how does her right eye not dry out since she can't blink it?
What this video doesn’t mention is that the wood used for bows, pernambuco wood, comes from a specific tree called the brazilwood tree (the national tree of Brazil.) The problem is that the brazilwood tree is now endangered and is nearly extinct in most of its original region.
The trade of pernambuco wood is likely to be banned in the immediate future, which will create a major problem in the bow-making industry which highly values this wood. The International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (IPCI), whose members are the bowmakers who rely on pernambuco for their livelihoods, is working to replant the trees. IPCI also advocates for the usage of other woods for violin bows to raise money to plant pernambuco seeds.
i wish more industries and crafts would allow more apprenticeships instead of everyone needing to go to college for 4+ years.
I checked twice for the vdo quality but it was 480 p both the times .the vdo quality and ur content is fantastic
1080p for me
TwoSetViolin needs to react to this.
OMFG yessss
what is the background music?
LITTERALLY THE BEST TH-cam CHANNEL
Any violin owners here?
- looking to rob yall
I never knew violin bows are this expensive 😳.
Then again, I am not a musician. 🚶♂️
What can I say... violin is the best instrument that can evoke such deep emotion in my heart & my soul. It's good to know this then
This is the same with all instruments.
I have a L Bausch bow. Under where the leather is installed there is a marking “X //“ is there any significance to this markings or symbol?
Can you guys make a video on GENELEC SPEAKERS? The master class monitor speakers that are just outrageously expensive.
A very interesting video about bowmaking.
Best episode by far
When you're this early that you cannot find the best comments
does the strings on the bow go one way or both. i mean the orientation of them?
I love the deep orange glow of Pernambuco.
I had no idea very very informative
"Professional bows/players have their bows redone every 3 months." 2 Cellos looked at each other and said "Thunderstruck?" New bows please after they finished tearing it up. Have you seen those guys tear up a bow in minutes? :D Bloody good job they are earning top cash for their musical skills, as I bet that shit gets really expensive. =D
Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but the hair also usually comes from a stallion instead of a mare due to their anatomical differences... the mare's tail hair gets routinely soaked with urine.
I see
Do one on violins themselves!
I can't figure it out, does she have a deformity, or a glass eye?
I met the person who was the highest bidder of that $600k+ Tourte bow in auction. He has many more gems at home.
Can anyone tell me the name of the first background song? It’s beautiful.
Bach Chaccone. Look up the Heifetz recording
@@RMSVA That is a beautiful piece, but I don’t think it’s the one I’m looking for.
Thank you anyway.
InTeReStInG
Very interesting. Thanks
My friend hasnt re haired her bow for 3 years how do i tell her
Richard the Third once said:"My Kingdom For A Horse"... Imagine what price a bow made from that horse would fetch!
The price bubble will burst.
i wanna know the name of the piece in the background
Chaconne by Bach
Bach Partita no.2 BWV 1004 Chaconne
this giving me harry potter vibes of choosing wand
What's the song the violinist is playing at the end??
It feels like she is making the finest wands.
A good bow can make an mediocre instrument sound as best as it can, a low quality bow can make an expensive beautiful instrument sound half as good
They're not. Only high end or antique ones are.
Who rehairs their bow every 3 months? I’ve never heard of that
Edited to add, I do not mean that people don't or to imply disrespect or disbelief, just that I, as a beginning student, had not heard of it.
Just tell me what's the title of the music of guy playing
Paubrasilia or the pernambuco wood is a endangered species, it take so many years to grow and it's illegal to buy/sell. People buying, using it's most likely a illegal logging
I saw it very well. I am a Korean carpenter. I hope we can be friends.
Im a cellist i mean its worth it but only if you have skills if your a beginner dont.
There's NEVER a morning that you wake up, and go, "Damn...I have to go to work?"
*QUE!?!?!? DAMN...I WISH I HAD YOUR OPTIMISM, BUT MANY OF US HATE OUR JOBS!*
Whats the first song thats played?
