You must get this question a lot and I’m sorry because I’m sure you have answered it a thousand times. I’m ready to buy what it takes to begin building plastic model cars. I’ve watched a 100 videos almost and I’m only watching yours. I am extremely handy. And I don’t want my first build to be a waste of my time. So, I have time and handiness. What should I start with? I need a challenge, and time and patience is not an issue. I built models as a kid. I’m now 52 and want to see how I do. So what I’m really asking is what should I get for my first build in decades? I’ll take my time to make it turn out nice. There are just so many options. Is there a better option for manufacturers? I don’t understand the levels? And I definitely don’t want any snap together stuff. You have inspired me. Your answer can be very direct and forthcoming. Where should I start? I’m very good at taking advice. Hope all is well.

begin is a question that varies greatly depending on a builders opinions. I am of the opinion that if you’re an adult and handy then your options really are wide open. Modern model kits go together very well right out of the box with very little fiddling. The older kits or modern model kits that are re-issues or “re-pops” of older kits can require a bit of adjusting to get things to fit right and go together. The other thing I would suggest is to choose a subject you really like. If you’re a Ferrari guy then get one. If you’re a classic muscle car guy then there you go. Choose a subject you’re passionate about. I also like to find pictures of a 1:1 or “real one” online and use that as a reference. One that really inspires me. I do my best building when I’m passionate about the subject. Realize also two very important things - probably the most important things in the hobby: 1. No model is perfect. I have never built a perfect model nor do I worry about it. I do my best and move forward and learn with every build. 2. It’s your kit build it the way you want for your building pleasure. The name of the hobby is FUN. If you want a red engine make it red. Even if it’s supposed to be silver. It’s your model and your fun. So that’s what I think. I hope you pick a great subject you will proud to build and display and most of all enjoy the build!

I have this kit in lineup. Looks great. Curious, do you find adding decals last over the clear coat superior?i have always added decals then cleared.
chad jaeckel If the paint is shiny then sure but sometimes with lacquers the base coat is dull so it you applied the decals you could get some what they call “silvering” of the decal. But either way is fine I think.

Have a question: I like the looks of some of the Aoshima wheels in resin, but don't know if they will fit my Revell models. They say 18", or 20", but before I buy them (often from Japan and expensive anyway), is there some way I can tell if they will work? How do I measure things in this scale? Is 1 mm equal to 25 mm in real life? How does this work please?
Jaroslav Peterka it’s based on inches - 1 inch equals 24 inches in real life. I would focus more on will they fit in the wheel well of the model.
I noticed you have Tamiya liquid surface primer on your workbench. Have you airbrushed it as a primer?

What do you recommend to remove chrome from your model parts? I’ve heard everything from bleach, oven cleaner, to rubbing alcohol.

Jim Kaminski I usually use oven cleaner - specifically the blue can since it’s not as caustic as the yellow and it removes the chrome in about 30 seconds!
Easy off or just an off brand?

I’m want to do a cancer build. Do you know of a company that sells cancer ribbon water slide decals? Im looking for one that would fit on a model hood. I’ve seen the very small ones that fit on a fingernail. Thanks for your help.
Jim Kaminski I am not sure but eBay might have some. You might have better luck getting a water slide decal kit and print your own. Great idea for a build! Good luck.
I posted the question on Facebook group and someone suggested using temporary tattoos. I might try it on a sample and see if it works before on a hood. Have you ever heard of anyone trying that?
