Should I get my Morgan SILVER dollars Graded?

Traditionally the English put their coins in cabinets. The slabs offer protection but they are harder to store and display and they can easily get scratched (even by lightly cleaning them). NGC also adds a sticker on the back of the outside of the slab which could get damaged, for instance from sliding the slab about. It is possible that a coin sent for a replacement slab could come back with a lower grade, so your MS70 could come back MS69 thus losing the owner a lot of money. All Metals tone/spot etc over time and opening the slab exposes the coin to air that may cause toning. Best for higher grade or valuable coins, MS64 or above (ideally higher) or only MS70 for proofs. Bullion coins should not be graded as they are worth only bullion, such as Eagles etc and the Britannia coins are all white over with milk spots anyway. Slabs are not for me, all mine are loose. I suppose you have to look at your reasons why you want them slabbed. If I lived in the USA I would rather buy an album and collect all the 90% silver dimes of Roosevelt. I think that would be great and a lot of fun rather than messing about with slabs.
I am leaning that way. Thank you!
IMO only the Morgans and the Indian Head cent are worth asking a dealer about for possible grading. The Morgan dates can be easily checked online (NGC) first. 👍
Good call mark!
Determining if a US coin is worth grading can be challenging. My adivise, look up the coins value in a red book and make an educated guess on its grade. Go backwards 1 or 2 grades just in case. If the price you paid, plus grading cost exceeds the redbook value, it's not worth grading. Example: you pay $30 for ramdom year morgan dollar (vf40 condition). It red books for 65$. Is it worth paying $50 to grade a coin you already paid $30 for, totaling $80? No. On the other hand, Example:
You spend $100 on a coin that redbooks for $500. Then yes, spending $100 to grade your $100 investment, establishing its value to $500 vs. just hearsay.
Yeah...I need a redbook. I have been holding off. Good call.
I really don’t know much about grading coins, the only coin I ever had graded was a Queen Isabella 1893 quarter.
THat would be a sweet quarter to grade! Which platform did. you use?
Love the world coins! Grading is not my thing. I get why people do it, but I think it just runs counter to the way I enjoy the hobby (and most other hobbies where it is a popular practice).
I have never done it personally and am really interested in what the process looks like.
The 1907 Indian cent would get a details grade , can see fine hair lines from cleaning
Interesting!! Thank you!
For Morgans, I'd only send in BU Gem for grading & it's gotta have hairlines & chest feathers. Unless it's a very rare key date! Then by all means, they must be graded if any above apply.
Well said my friend. Thank you!
Awesome collection 👌 😎 Very cool to see 😎✔️👍👍
Thank you!
Agree with you on the possibility of some
Thank you...This is all new to me.
I have seen Morgan's, but not a peace dollar, but very nice.
I LOVE the peace dollars!
Don't!!! I remember the stress it caused me whenever I was about to get my report card. Leave Morgan alone. Other than that, I'll be interested in hearing about your experience, should you proceed.
LOL! We shall see.
Very nice pick-ups. When I purchase Morgan or Peace dollars and I feel they will grade a EF or better, I have them graded.
Interesting! How many have you graded?!
I wouldn’t slab anything expecting a profit, if they were mine though, I’d slab the CCs just to authenticate them and toss em into the deep stack
The deep stack...I love that!
Cool variety of coins. But grading is not my area of expertise at all. Like most are saying, best to have someone like a coin shop dealer take a look at them and recommend which may be worth grading.
Thank you!
Not an expert, but I think it’s worth researching the ‘top pops’ for different coins, ie the highest grading of a particular coin that’s been done. I had a coin I didn’t think was worth grading as it was f/xf at best, but I was told by a dealer that made it quite close to the highest grade of that particular coin. Still didn’t get it graded as I like to handle it! I suppose if I wanted to sell it I’d have a look at the graded prices compared to raw and see if it made financial sense, otherwise I’m not to fussed about grading, certainly not modern coins!
Thank you for the info! I will look into it!
On the pennies look for low mintages and error dates, mint mark errors excetra 👍
Good call!
Awesome culture, I have one of those Chinese dynesty coins almost the same as you I was thinking about doing a short video on it tonight. Awesome 1892 Indian head cent. 👍🐦🔥
Fantastic...Took me a while to understand what I was looking at. Numista and I are now friends.
Awesome collection! I'm kinda new to grading to but for sure the cc Morgan. Maybe the seated liberty cc because in vg to fine condition, it'll be worth it.
Thank you! I hope to find a local expert and see what the process looks like.
I'm far from an expert, but I think there are 2-3 currencies that could be graded:
- 1892 Indian head (the best of the whole lot)
- 1924 Peace Dollar
and maybe the 1880 Morgan, but I'm afraid it will be cleaned.
This is just my opinion, it would be better to consult a real expert.
Thank you! I hope to find a reputable person to look at them near me!
You should talk to Ben the CoinGeek.
True! He is the MAN!
I have nazi-era reichmarks, and hold them for their novelty and historical significance.
Otherwise, I look at the other coins, and from a chemist perspective, I see them for their metal purification value. That's just me. Interesting collection there. Good vid, brother.
True on that...I forgot that you are seeing the crystals in the coins lol!
Cool video I am looking forward to adding a seated liberty to my stack one day
They are beauties!
I might pick up a morgan soon. Since i don't have one yet
I think everyone should have one!!
@@cultureofcurrency I agree along with at least 1 eagle
@@VegasStacker702 Yes!!
I’m unable to constructively provide advice as I’m not a graded coin Guy however I am interested to know what you hope to achieve by the grading?
I have never graded before and am interested in the process.
@@cultureofcurrency I’m keen to see what you submit and what they come back at
IM NOT INTO GRADING COC
I have never done it myself.
