- Yes are one of the most innovative and successful rock bands of all time with a career that now spans five decades. In 2003 the band made their first appearance at the Montreux Festival, despite having a long association with the town itself (they recorded there frequently in the seventies). It was a triumphant night and is regarded by both the band members and fans as probably the finest Yes gig ever to be filmed.

I won't labour the point but these guys stand next to the 18/19 century classical composers as sublime musicians, whose music will still be enjoyed for Millenia to come.
This song is probably the most beautiful, complex, emotionally moving piece of progressive rock ever written. It brings tears to my eyes. RIP Mr. Squire.

@Bradley Dayton : I duly agree, hearing YES since I was 14, now 56, "Going for the One" was recorded at the Mountain (Rock) Recording Studio in Montreux, Switzerland, the same where QUEEN, GENESIS, DEEP PURPLE, etc, also performed and recorded, with Rick Wakeman playing the Church Organ of Saint-Martin, Vevey, also recorded at the "Les Planches Church", Montreux. AWAKEN is the Best piece of Progressive Rock Ever Composed. R.I.P. Chris.

A lineup we will never see again, hear again live, to enjoy the talent that created this and so many wonderful compositions, which thankfully transends time. For those of us who have been lucky to see and hear them perform, videos such as this, brings back all the majical memories that these particular 4 Men have gifted us with.
A band of this dimension will never come again. Their music will continue to blow minds for another century.

Chris Squire is always regarded as the amazing bass player from Yes but few make any reference to his incredible supporting vocal harmonies underneath Jon, he was also an excellent harmoniser, RIP Chris

I've been a chorister for almost 40 years. I know a good voice when I hear one. Chris had a fine voice, and I always picked him out - as much as I love Jon's voice, like we all do!

Chris was always bang on with his vocal harmonies, and his voice blended well with Jon's. A total musician.

I'm nearly 72, a year or two older than these fantastic guys, whom I have followed since they started. I think this track is one of the finest they ever did and epitomises the band really, with the outright emotion it produces. It still makes the hairs on my arms stand up every time I hear it

In 2004, when I was 21, I paid for my whole family (10 tickets) to see Yes at a local fairgrounds here in Vermont. My parents had been big fans since the 1970s, and I was raised on Yes in the '80s and '90s. We all thought we knew what to expect. But when they played Awaken - a song that wasn't often played at home for whatever reason - we all broke down into tears. The piece is so incredibly moving, even visually. I will love this band and these musicians forever.

What I love about many Yes performances is after 7 minutes you think , wow that was genius! Then it continues and gets progressively better for 15 more minutes. Really the absolute Mozart perfectionists of rock music, and I mean it. i wish I had seen them live.

Yes was (is) much more than just a rock band, they were an invention. They invented something original, an invention of sight and sound that we never experienced before, and never will again. Unique into itself, there are no imitators, or sound a likes. And they reinvented themselves over 5 decades, always with a new look, a new sound.. always intriguing and exciting. Their theme based albums centered on our own self-discovery, the trials of mankind, and how we all fit together, and of course the awakening of the human sprit epitomized in this song. They are a gift to the world.

I'm South Brazilian and we have a constant relationship with the Platinian Countries.
Between Brazil and Argentina there is a playful fight about "PELÉ" and "MARADONA".
Until 2022, there was a journalist in Argentina called Mauro Viale, a very close friend of "MARADONA" and one of the greatest experts on the legacy and history of "PELÉ".
In Argentina, until the '70s, PELÉ was affectionately called "EL NEGRO".
One day Viale was asked who is the better MARADONA or PELÉ, and he replied: "Of course, the best is MARADONA, but EL NEGRO, EL NEGRO is the PELÉ".
The same goes for RICK and JON, they belong to a category above of all.

When it comes to YES, with all the key players who created masterpieces such as Awaken, there will never be another time like it. Music that was developed, explored and experienced. An era slowly passing us by, But relived and appreciated with all the audio recordings and especially the videos and DVD's. Like a fine wine, its good when first tasted, but even better when its aged. Yes stands on their own merits, one of a kind.

I can't get through this song without crying. Jon's proud of this song & he should be. I'm always tapping to Alan's bells from the bridge. I'm so grateful I grew up in this period of music, mainly the 60's & 70's when music was it's most creative. I hear what's out today & would prefer hearing someone snoring. After all today's music puts me to sleep as it's so boring. I thank my late oldest brother, Steve, for turning me on to YES in 1972. These gentlemen should receive an honorary Grammy for their work which far exceeds anything awarded today.

The last great epic from the definitive Yes line up. This performance transported me right back to the Empire Pool, Wembley in 1977, the only time I got to hear Yes play this masterwork. The communion between musicians and audience is captured perfectly here. Seeing these guys so completely and utterly lost in this harmonic meditation makes you wonder why this line up just didn’t go on and on and on. If anyone wants to know why I so deeply, deeply love this band then just watch this stellar performance and Awaken to all its wonders. Rick, Steve, Jon, Alan and Chris, wherever you may be … thank you.
This epic masterpiece is so beautiful and emotional. I saw them perform this at The House of Blues in Hollywood and there were many of us crying by the end, including Jon. It was an intimate venue. I will never forget it. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Rest in peace Mr. Squire, may your memory be a blessing….
I loved Yes from the 1st time I heard them in 1970, a few years later Awaken came out and has been my hidden favorite since. This live version shows how great of a Band they are.
This is a monument to the music. It is an historic song for the next generations
I wish Steve Howe is really proud for the work he did in it. He got such nice melodies in it and in many other pieces of Yes. In Aweken the last solo on the steel guitar with an air that gently hovers above the other instruments is for me moving and therefore beautiful. Touché.
I have had the pleasure of seeing and hearing "Awaken" performed live on six occasions in my lifetime, and I can truthfully say that it is a religious experience.
The first time I heard Awaken was live in 1979. They were in the round, I was on the 5th row…my mouth was open & I was wondering what the heck just happened!

Here is a little of trivia that few people are aware of. After all of the writing, creating and rehearsing was completed and it came time to record the Going for the One album, the band was all set to record the 3 songs for side 1, and Awaken was originally intended to take up all of side 2. But when they were actually recording Awaken, they realized that there was too much redundancy. According to the late Alan White, they removed parts of the song which totaled about 5 minutes. Mr. White stated they tried various ways to use that 5 mins to enhance the song, but nothing was working. The band accepted the idea that it was one of their best recordings of any length, so they left it at 15 mins. But their studio contract was within a few days of expiring. Wondrous Stories was written, rehearsed and recorded in a bit of a panic to get it done on time. This was described by Alan White in an interview long ago.
"Awaken" really benefits from their restraint. Quite a few of their longer pieces would have benefitted from a 15-30% trim.

The song lasted for nearly 20 minutes here and there wasn’t any sign of redundancy, what a shame, this song didn’t make the whole side of an album, it should be up there, with their fantastic repertoire of 20 minute masterpieces.
@@Atom-56 Masterpiece indeed. To see Awaken last close to 20 mins live is no surprise. Many live versions of other songs took longer to complete live. The best example is Ritual. Not sure what concert DVD, (35th anniversary concert tour? ) one version goes on for over 25 mins. Mostly due to Squire's extended bass solo.
So beautiful. I listened to Yes with a wonderful freind and lover and I love them as much now that I am 70 years old. They have a spirit!
I first saw Yes in Memphis I believe in 1972 maybe 73.
I since have gone to every tour that has been within a 3 hour drive regardless of the area of the country I am living at the time but only when Jon is the lead singer with the exception of Trevor Horn in San Antonio. Sorry they just are not Yes with out Jon Anderson!

Rick Wakeman is second to none and I actually got to enjoy a Heineken with him after a Journey to the Centre of the Earth show.

We are all SO BLESSED to have enjoyed their tenure as the best Rock band ever with tremendous respect to ELP, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Genesis, King Crimson and yes even Rush! (3 man bands deserve so much respect as there is no where to hide on stage!)
A friend has worked with Jon Anderson on a project, and visited with Jon and the band after a concert. She asked Jon what was his favorite lyric. He proceeded to say, "Master of images, songs cast a light on You." This album was released months after a sudden, horrific loss of my mother, and it entered into the fabric of my life as part of my recovery. A song of loss, "Turn of the Century", new beginning, "Parallels", joy, "Wondrous Stories", and finally, what I consider an ode to the one true God, "Awaken". "...Like the time I ran away, turned around and You were standing close to me..." Finally, thank you for posting this wonderfully well made video. A subtle highlight is Chris Squire as whirling dervish to punctuate a moment in the song.

Along with Keith Emerson, Wakeman is definitely top tier when it comes to being a master of his instruments, however, the sound of yes..particularly this lineup(giving Bill Bruford no less of credit) merritts the highest of respect from top musicians in the highest of standards!!

its amazing how Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe can be in their own world at each end of the stage … and somehow … their music comes together and blends … at moments Jon and Chris and Alan are just there … that's how powerful Rick and Steve are … they are strong individuals that somehow meet and blend …
This is certainly the piece of art that shows the outstanding talents of all Yes members most impressively. Not only the virtuosity in handling their instruments but their emotionality of composing and interpretating as a band. An honour to have the opportunity to whatch this - half a lifetime beyond the hype. It makes me feel blessed and grateful.

I believe that this is one of the greatest pieces of music of the 20th century. It always brings me to tears, its almost a religious experience . I use to loop this song in my apt to give it good vibrations. It just seems so uplifting and spiritual .
I'm with you on that one, Frank. This track simply defies brilliance - the most astounding rock track (if it can be described as such) I've ever heard. The central section with the interchanges between organ and harp and percussion is magnificent - it sounds futuristic and mediaeval at the same time.
Mark Thorne When I first started to play drums, this song and heart of the sunrise were songs I had learn to play. I grew up in Massachusetts listening to this band. Mike Portnoy use to as well. Indeed one of the fathers of Progressive Music.

When this album came out I bought it but did not pay it the attention it deserved, now all these years later I have come to fully realize the ethereal surreal feeling one gets when the song truly unfolds itself to you. It is a religious experience, without a doubt. I have come to appreciate anew the songs "Parallels" and "Machine Messiah" for what they are, true works of art.
Steve, to your short list I would suggest you add "Turn of the Century" from the same album (as "Awaken"). If you want a longer list, well...I could go on for an hour! I am happy for you that you've opened a gate that leads to lots of amazing places!

This music is a drug. I've been listening to it for 40 years and I don't stop trudging - it's PERFECT MUSIC-it's DIVINE MUSIC. If there is life after death, and our souls go to some other world, I would like to fly in the music of "Yes"-this music is Paradise.
There's an extraordinary back story to this recording, recounted to me by the chief engineer on the sessions, my old friend and regular collaborator the late John Timperley. It was recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux, but Rick Wakeman was determined to use a real church organ to achieve that final epic climax. So physical lines were laid between the studio and a nearby large church, which boasted a four-manual pipe organ (such was the clout these '70s supergroups enjoyed!), and Rick played live with the band, back in the studio, using just a pair of cans feeding him their contributions. It is without a doubt one of the greatest feats of musicianship in the history of pop music.
Two funny asides - the studio assigned Rick a junior engineer to deal with the technical stuff in the church, and the lad was one of Charlie Chaplin's (fairly numerous) younger offspring. When the recording was finished, Rick decided it would be fun to lock him in the church, return to the studio and deny any knowledge of his whereabouts. Apparently, the young man was in quite a state when they finally found him...
Then, when it came to the mix, impressed by the studio's technical abilities where long-distance communication was concerned, Rick demanded another pair of cans in his Rolls, in the studio car park, where he could monitor proceedings whilst 'entertaining' a young lady he had encountered nearby. Those truly were the days, my friends...

It’s all subjective about who’s the greatest ever in what genre. People will always have their personal faves. For example I prefer Genesis over Yes but still love yes. I know others who’ll say gentle giant or VDGG or King crimson were the greatest. Personally I love em all, what a great era from 67 to 77 it was for progressive rock music.
The voice of an angel,the master on the bass,one of the greatest keyboards player of all times,a gitarist that can blow your socks off, and Allen White a fantastic drummer, this completely blows me away still after, roughly 35 years or more

For all the beauty of this song, Rick Wakeman shines as only he can. And every other member is masterful in their contributions. Truly one of the greatest musical compositions, rivaling the very best and easily surpasses the majority of music ever created. Thank you Jon Steve Alan Rick & Chris for giving us perfection in sound that reverberates our very core of being.

YES is easily in the top 10 bands of all time for technical proficiency on their instruments (inc. Jon's voice). Every member is a maestro that seems to effortlessly cover all scales at any tempo desired. You'd think they would all be divas wanting center-stage spotlight, but instead they look for just the right transition at the right time for each to show his skills. I was indeed blessed to hear them from their 1st album on. I can think of no other band even remotely like their sound, let alone with their success. Egos have sparred, but never shattered the band. Thankfully!

I was very lucky to see their "Going for the one Tour" in 1977 in France !!! What a show !!! One of the best show seen in my life !!! YES are magic !!! The one and only best line up !!! And Jon's voice .... pure magic !!! RIP Chris :-((

When I was in high school, back in the 70s, I would carefully put my LP of the Going For the One album on my (vinyl) record player, to this song. It sounds funny, but this was my "going to sleep" song. I would light a small candle, close my eyes and imagine the places this song would transport me to. Dreamy, mystical places. I memorized every note...every twist and turn, like a very familiar road. In the end, I'd float away to some magical place ✨.
Now, in my mid 60s, I just might do that again.
I saw Yes a few times and consider myself to be very fortunate to have done so. Quite memorable. In my mind, I was born at exactly the right time. I remember listening to songs from the Beatles, when they were just hitting the airwaves for the first time. Same for the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and, of course, Yes!

and yes , music of the band Yes is so interesting and beautiful that we can listen to them forever and ever , like Demis Rousos said , hehe .....ps Going for the one was from the first note so exciting and interesting and together with Relayer is my most memorable album of Yes.
