In 2019 we spent 3 days in Georgetown, in 2022 -2023 we came back for 5 months. In 2019 we went to various other countries which we loved so deciding where to go after retiring was a tough decision, Penang, Malaysia won our hearts. When one has 5 months to live in a country one actually ends up meeting a new community, and discovering so much. We are introverts who have become social butterflies. We met our neighbours, people on the street, and people on our walks. We cooked food and ate delicious food in restaurants. We have found that people are friendly and helpful. We spent the day at the Thaipusam celebration, so fabulous. I could go on forever about how wonderful Penang is as are many other places. I am glad you enjoyed your time here and hope you both are doing well. Yes, the medical system here is fantastic we have used it.

Hi you two. My wife is Malaysian and we've been there several times. If you haven't already, I recommend you try Nasi Lemak (defo for breakfast or lunch), Char Keow Teow (excellent spicy fried noodles), Roti Canai (flat bread with curry sauce, nice snack with a drink), Roti Tissue (sweet tower shaped thing, you had to see it to believe it, as a snack, it's not filling) and Laksa (tasty noodle soup, delicious and filling). Love Malaysian food.

Oh, to be young again like you two. This looked like so much fun. Thank you for this beautiful tour. This is the best travel show ever! It's such a bummer to have health issues when you are leading your intentional life. Neil, I hope you are feeling better and resolving the issue.

I was hoping when you were interested in the church, you would fall in love with worship and realize what so many people love about it..a lot like pubs, a since of community, fulfillment, lots of love and much much more.
Oh! And you both look thinner and more youthful these days.. keep up the great videos, and thank you.

Penang has vivid diversified communities, combination of traditional and modern architecture, both seaside and hills, multiple choices of medical facilities, leisure and industrial all at once in the island. Feel free to explore it. You would love it.

There is always something for everyone in Penang if you give it a chance. I understand some who have been to penang and in particular Georgetown, don't feel the connection due to its reputation as being a touristy town and the overcrowding of tourists. Before, we always come to penang from KL once every year for holiday, and we always discover something new that we like every time we were in Penang. We eventually moved to penang in 2019. And the longer we stayed here the more we love the island life. Even today, we are still exploring, finding new things, places, food, activities here on the island.

Perfect timing! I'm currently planning the later parts of my 5 months in SE Asia and am right now specifically looking at Penang. Plan to spend 2 weeks there in April. Loved the video. Thanks for the info. And being a dark chocolate connoisseur, I will definitely have to give Beryl's a try!

We spent four nights in George Town in early January. We actually stayed at The Prestige hotel. The room was excellent and the rooftop infinity pool and sun terrace were brilliant. It was around £80 per night (which is pricey for Malaysia). Don't use the restaurant for breakfast - Norm's Micro Roastery across the street is a better option. I don't get your negativity about the place - the people are relaxed, polite and friendly plus the heritage areas have character. The hawker markets are wonderful for breakfast/lunch/dinner. The Botanical Gardens are worth visiting to see monkeys in the wild.

I'm happy to hear you were able to enjoy some things about Penang after deciding to go off the cuff. I feel like that is the best way to explore a place. With that said, I mostly agree with you. To me Penang felt like a "Jack of all trades, master of none" kind of place. It ticks a lot of boxes, but didn't particularly wow me. However, it is definitely fun hunting down all of the local noodle dishes there. I was also impressed with the health care I received there, which included a health screen, consultation with an Ortho doctor, and MRI. Very efficient and cost effective. Perhaps another visit in the future is warranted, but to many other places to check out for now. That bit with the tik tokker was hilarious BTW 😂

Remember fondly the old tour of the Cadbury factory back in the early 90's. They used to let you try different chocolates and meet the makers along the tour. Not like that today.

I tried to go in that church but it had funny opening times. I think I was in Penang for 7-10 days and that was enough for me. Much preferred Langkawi…Tax free and the beaches were great. Just talking about it makes me want to go back 🤔

Penang doesn't undergo much alteration, particularly in the downtown area. There is still the previous row of shop lots. Some of it has already been transformed into boutique hotels, cafés, and bars, while others have remained in their current shape and have been quite run down for a while. This is likely because private owners own them. You might see similar retail lots in Singapore, however the majority of them have recently undergone renovations. However, because Penang was the first British colony in Southeast Asia, it possesses more colonial buildings than any other Malaysian city. I currently live in KL, but I always look forward to visiting Penang because of the unique cuisine.

@@EGO0808 - Even though the Portuguese and Dutch were early colonial powers in Malaysia, I didn't forget about them. However, as far as I'm aware, they didn't have a significant influence, especially in Penang, where we are currently talking about.
