Zelenskyy, world leaders react as Hungary's Orban says he’ll block Ukraine's EU bid

- On Wednesday, Hungary reaffirmed its plans opposing Ukraine's bid for membership in the European Union (EU), setting the stage for a clash at an EU leaders' summit this week. The EU Commission has proposed that the summit this week makes a decision to start membership talks with Ukraine, once it meets the four outstanding conditions set out previously to advance Kyiv's EU hopes.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who boasts of his strong ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, told his national parliament that fast-track accession to the EU for neighboring Ukraine does not serve the interests of Hungary or the EU. Orban has threatened to veto proposals allowing Kyiv to start talks to accede to the bloc and to receive substantial financial and military aid from the EU budget.
During a surprise visit to Norway, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by saying that Orban does not have “any reasons” to block Ukraine's EU membership.
Meanwhile, world leaders reacted from Brussels, Belgium, as they gathered for the EU Council summit. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that “apathy on Ukraine is unacceptable” and Montegro’s President Jakov Milatovic said that he was “hopeful” Hungary will change its attitude.

Maybe, I'm pretty sure that EU expects Ukraine ordeal to work out like investment. Initially EU supports Ukraine and is all good for them and after war EU strikes deal for resources and production, thus benefiting from Ukraine. It's definitely risky bet but maybe it could work out. It's really no secret already that Ukraine will be a financial sinkhole for a while, it's just unclear how long that while will last and if there's bigger benefit beyond that. Besides that, it seems that ideologically Ukraine is fine with EU membership. In the end I don't think it will work this way and EU is just generous now, but there's a chance for some more mutually beneficial relationship.

The biggest brake in the EU and NATO is Hungary. I wonder how this is tolerated among European countries. As a European, I do not accept Hungary's actions in the EU, because their purpose is only to create an obstacle to development. Best to kick them out.

@@promo7619 The problem is that that's a common opinion now, but EU has basically no mechanism to kick members out as far as I know. I mean ffs Turkey was threatening Greece, another EU member and EU gave no answer, NATO didn't respond either. Before Hungary, it was Poland being brake in EU.
You have to reach certain criteria to join the EU which Ukraine is currently not meeting. It is pointless to discuss membership period. Its all an act.

@@nickwalsworth7650 Ukraine would not adopt the EURO for quite a few years as part of the process in joining the EU. 1st countries must develop and become part of the system, reach certain goals (it's on a continuum...I know I could look it up...), the EURO is one of them.
Switzerland is not part of the EU (but, it's included in the single market).
There's a lot of confusing things like that...Norway and Iceland aren't members, however, they are also in the Schengen area.

Slovak goverment stated the same: we will not support Ukraine's EU bid untill Ukraine fullfills all requirements as every EU member state did. With current state of Ukraine, there is no way our goverment will support their membership and actually I agree with that. Rules should be respected. Ukraine should get theirs things together but i dont see that happening in europes most corrupted country. On the other hand, Ukraine joining NATO is another chapter. That's logic, of course Ukraine will have to fulfill all the requirements. No Hungarian or Slovak or whatever veto required. The question is when Ukraine actually does fulfill the requirements, what will Orban say then? Knowing him he will still veto to bargain with the EU. I'm sure even in 10 years there will still be EU money for Hungary frozen if Victor is still in power. Maybe Hungary got rid of him till then.

Ukraine is the # 6 wheat exporter China and India aren't in the top 10 of exporters.
China is the top producer then India, then Russia, but Russian is in the top 10 exporters at #1 and Ukraine #8 using 2020 figures.
India and China produce more but consume most of what they produce and import to make up the shortfall.
But the world rotates on a wobble so production doesn't come on the market all at once everyone buys and everyone sells depending on the time of year and storage capacity.

Its 23 years since the Yugoslavia war is over and we still consider people of BIH , Serbia, Montenegro , Albania, N Macedonia not worthy to become EU members, but 2 countries amidst Russian territorial disputes worthy? Comrade Zelenskiy, there is one reason: EU and NATO cannot accept any country that has unsettled territorial disputes. (Apparently Turkey and Greece are the exceptions.) As long as you have ongoing territorial disputes, you cannot be accepted.
That would be a reasonably convincing argument, IF the "territorial dispute" hadn't been kicked off by Ukrainian's efforts to join the EU in the first place, and the fighting is with the same invader (Russia/Putin) that tried to make Ukraine join get closer to the Russian sphere instead.
In other words, applying that rule in this circumstance would amount to giving Russia a veto over who can join the EU... and that strikes me as an extraordinarily shortsighted and remarkably dumb thing to do. The EU can quite easily refine the rule to account for such circumstances.
Besides, it's pathetically obvious that Hungary is unable to give a _legitimate_ explanation for this obstructionism -- and even Orban is admitting this by offering only mealy-mouthed, diplomatic word-salad in the place of actual reasons.
