    OMG!! I was just looking for something to do with so many figs we have at our garden in Vancouver. I loved the way you incorporated pepper in the jam. You're a genius!!

    Hi kaye, that's a bean smasher to make refried beans .didn't know you could use it for mashed potatoes. Ha Ha ,continue to make great videos. UPSMan retired local 63 Calif.

      Hahaha, you know I always had a metal one, and my hubs brought this one home once, and it never worked as well as my old metal one. Maybe because it's not a potato masher!! LOL. I'm so glad to hear from you, been a long time. I was wondering about you the other day.

      I hope you get your figs! They are so amazing! My little fig tree only produced about a dozen normal size figs, but this brown turkey tree is amazing! I don't know how I got so lucky.

    Oh, I love these big figs of yours! Your climate is ideal for them. Mine are still tiny and will not ripen here in my rainy, chilly summers. In the supermarkets you rarely get them and if they have some they cost more than one euro per piece (and they are real small, mabye half the size of yours). So no fig jam for me here. Loved that video, especially your guest star. ;-)

    you should try your hand at "pineapple and pepper jam" - all it is -
    2 pounds of pineapples -2 pounds of sugar -splash of lemon juice and 1 cut up pepper -preferably red pepper or yellow.
    you will love it !
    jams are so easy! its always equal amounts of fruit to sugar and then the waiting game.
    is walker your son? he looks like you around the eyes.
    i hope you get into canning because its real fun !

    I made a Jalapeño/Fig Jam for my husband a few days ago. I got the figs from my local swap group and realized my husband wasn't a fan of just eating fig lol.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean he did not go for the jam you made?? Sounds wonderful, though I would go a little hotter with the pepper. You can always add some pear or peach or plum to disguise. :)

    mmm.. looks good... we always used a cheesecloth satchel to hold any spices or herbs you want to flavor your dish and then remove when done cooking... or at any time you like.. When I made tomato jam I used some hot pepper, black pepper, cinnamon and ginger.. I used a small apple for pectin and sweetness... I like the bits of fruit in my jam but could have used an immersion and blender ti make it pureed. then I jarred and store in the freezer ... ( no canning) ... try dehydrating some produce.. I use my oven light... (even greens..)

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, was just thinking I need a dehydrator, but I really don't have counter space for it. I can just use my oven? It's gas. So, how do you use the light for heat? As for the cheesecloth, I thought about that after I did it. LOL. Oh, I'm definitely going to make tomato jam with your ingredients. Did not think about black pepper! Did you use fresh ginger? I just used an apple in my pineapple guava chutney, did not realize that helped to thicken it!

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, I do want an immersion blender. Do you have one you can recommend? I'll order today! I have the last of my green tomatoes to can.

    • @lorilumax6850
      @lorilumax6850 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used ground ginger.. a dash.. (tbsp?) and I also used a bit of sugar.. ( rounded tsp?) but not sure it needed it.. its lovely on toast, but to make it into a meat sauce like ketchup or bbq.. not as much sugar.. and a touch of vinegar... chia will also thicken jams.. I am sure many fruits would work in this way.. I started with a small batch.. about 3 pints? a few under ripened fruit helps to thicken too

    • @lorilumax6850
      @lorilumax6850 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was given one and it is a Oster.. can't say I have used another one

      I found my recipe for the jam. This recipe was inspired by Ray at Praxxus55712 on TH-cam.
      I found this sweet, so adjust as needed.. Makes a heavy syrup or loose jam. Lovely on toast. Sweet and tangy. nice on a burger. Makes 3 pints
      Lori's Tomato Jam
      5 1/2 cups blended tomatoes
      1 1/2 cups blended apples (high pectin fruit of choice)
      4 cups sugar ( fairly sweet, but helps with thickening and preserving)
      1 cup vinegar
      1/2 cup cider vinegar
      1 tsp cinnamon
      1 tsp ginger
      1/2 tsp onion powder
      1/4 tsp paprika
      1/4 tsp pepper flakes (ground)
      1 tsp pepper (ground)
      1 tsp salt
      Enjoy

      Unfortunately I missed out on my figs tree this year. Went over two weeks ago and she had moved out. And I'm guessing the realtor had all the fruits trees cut down. 😓Every year for the pass 4yrs jI'm so lucky to have such a sweet lady that let me pick from her figs trees growing out of her yard. Thank you for the reminder. Hoping we all will see a video of how you make your pineapple guava jam.😊
