Have to say, I am VERY impressed with the production end of this treasure of a group. The aerial views of the magnificent churches, the shots of the members with their unique expressions and movements--I, especially, adore the close ups of van Douselaar at the organ. The first version of this cantata, BWV 36c, was composed in April or May 1725 for the birthday of an academic teacher. BWV 36a, Steigt freudig in die Luft, was first performed on 30 November 1726 (or already 1725?) on the birthday of Princess Charlotte Friederica Amalia of Anhalt-Köthen, the wife of Prince Leopold, Bach's employer from 1717 to 1723. Its music is lost, but it can be partially reconstructed. A one-part version of the cantata from around 1726-1730 is documented. BWV 36c was performed again possibly on 9 April 1731 on the birthday of the Thomasschule rector Johann Matthias Gesner. The version heard on the video, BWV 36, was performed on 2 December 1731. BWV 36b, Die Freude reget sich, was written around 1737-1738 for a member of the Leipzig scholarly family Rivinus; probably for the birthday of Professor Johann Florens Rivinus.

The chorus at the beginning is spectacular. The male voices are powerful combined with female voices. The quality is the best, comparing with other Bach versions of this cantata.
I would like to know those 30 people who did not appreciate this Cantata and especially why. Probably they can do better... for sure. You are all fantastic!!!

Seventh movement (aria) from cantata BWV 36 From the protestant church Trogen in Switzerland Choir and Orchestra of the J. S. Bach Foundation Rudolf Lutz - conductor Soloists Nuria Rial - soprano John Holloway - violin
The soprano, Zsuzsi Toth, is the star of this performance. Her singing in "Auch mit gedämpften" is a miracle. But there is a villian, too - the concert master, who plays the violin obligata in the aforementioned aria. He expands many of Bach's semiquavers to demisemiquavers, with disastrous effect, and he floods his playing with rubato. Playing rubato in Bach is a musical sin. How did the maestro allow this to happen? Or did he himself plot this murder of "music in the castle of heaven" (Gardiner's words)? It is so unfortunate that the most beautiful singing has been ruined by an ill-conceived accompaniment. This is like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa. The recordings of Gardiner, Suzuki, Herreweghe, and Koopman have sopranos whose voices are nowhere as gorgeous as Toth's, and yet these performances are much more enjoyable. I wish Toth would record this cantata with some other ensemble, or even with the same group, but with the violinist having full respect for Bach's score.
Rubber mutes were not used in Bach's time. I love this channel but please get a wooden mute for Mr Sato - his wonderful playing deserves better that rubber. ;-)
One day people may finally consider that the firrt romantic symphony written was in fact the 'Dritter Theil der Clavier Übung bestehend in verschiedenen Vorspielen über die Catechismus - und andere Gesaenge, vor die Orgel; Denen Liebhabern, und besonders denen Kennern von dergleichen Arbeit, zur Gemüths Ergezung verfertiget von Johann Sebastian Bach …’
@@VaggosWho Very complex Lego bricks with more than 3 dimensions, of course. He always starts with the lyrics, he translates the lyrics to a little theme and then every brick falls into place. For Bach it was like solving a highly complex sudoku or a mathematical equation which only he understands. He often wrote musical riddles for his sons and students, where they had to unpack 2 or 3 hidden voices from the available material, etc. He was a troll .. and a nerd .. and I love him even more for that.
I completely disagree with all the Lego analogies. Even though there is a "system" and "equation" in it, if you want to call it that, the essence of Bach's music is the soul in it. I say, always try to discover it. There is nothing more exhilerating than being part of a Bach performance. Something that words can not really describe and that I don't want to miss anymore and will try to keep doing until my last day.
The Lego idea can be very helpful. schwingtFREU- digEUCH- emPOR will swing like that. The opening Choir swings happily (Schwingt freudig) miming the text. The lilting metrics of the texts are all throughout the piece. Bach plays dynamically with these building blocks. You can feel exactly when the Ensemble pours out more release and where the conductor emphasizes a chord or design element. Where he lets something bloom or flourish or pop. Especially in the Tenor Aria. Harmony, melody and rhythm interplay with tension and release. In the chorales the lilt of the music also obeys the text. In the last Aria you can hear the tetra-meter auchMIT- geDÄM- pftenSCHWA- chenSTIM(me). So the text helps you understand how Bach builds tension and release in an infinite variety of ways, inciting our nervous system to release its chemicals. Bach believed in Sacred Geometry, so the Lego building happens when all these lilting electrical impulses become a welded current flowing all through your nervous system. Then you can enter the Virtual Reality that the Lego craft is conveying.
I was sort of thinking the exact thing about being in any musical group performing Bach (or any other great composer ftm), nothing more inspiring, not even being a member of the 1980 USA Miracle onf Ice hockey team or the GB Packers in their greatest yrs.

Such warmth and enjoyment comes across in that opening Chorus . That's often not the case in many ensembles . Why not show some humanity ? This isn't music written for Artificial Intelligence Bots after all !

So ist ihm solches ein Geschrei,
Das er im Himmel selber hört.
-
Also with muted, weak voices
is God's majesty honored.
For if the Spirit only resounds with it,
it becomes such an outcry,
that is is heard in heaven itself.
-
oh how very beautiful, the meaning of these lyrics (coming from the soul), expressed in the melody...
Yes, I especially loved their performance of this aria. The meaning of the lyrics is echoed in the reduced instrumentation and muted violin.
absolument magique !
Wunderschön!
0:08 1. Chorus
Schwingt freudig euch empor zu den
erhabnen Sternen,
Herrlichkeit.
Soar joyfully up to the lofty stars,
You tongues, which are now cheerful in Zion!
But stop! the sound need not spread far,
For He approaches you in person, the Lord of Glory.
4:07 2. Choral
Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, Now come,
Der Jungfrauen Kind erkannt,
Des sich wundert alle Welt,
Gott solch Geburt ihm bestellt.
Now come, Saviour of the Gentiles,
Known as the Virgin’s Child;
All the world marvels that
God has ordained for Him such a birth.
7:56 3.Aria
Die Liebe zieht mit sanften Schritten
Sein Treugeliebtes allgemach.
Gleichwie es eine Braut entzücket,
Wenn sie den Bräutigam erblicket,
So folgt ein Herz auch Jesu nach.
Love with soft steps gradually
Draws his truly beloved.
Just as a bride is enchanted
When she sees the bridegroom,
So too does a heart follow after Jesus.
13:32 4.Chorale
Zwingt die Saiten in Cythara
Und laßt die süße Musica
Ganz freudenreich erschallen,
Daß ich möge mit Jesulein,
Dem wunderschönen Bräutgam mein,
In steter Liebe wallen!
Singet, springet,
Jubilieret, triumphieret,
Dankt dem Herren!
Groß ist der König der Ehren.
Compel the strings in Cythera
And let the sweet music
Sound quite rich in joy,
So that with my Jesus,
My wondrous fair Bridegroom,
I may simmer in constant love!
Sing, spring,
Exult, triumph,
Thank the Lord!
Great is the King of honour.
15:25 5.Aria
Willkommen, werter Schatz!
Die Lieb und Glaube machet Platz
Vor dich in meinem Herzen rein,
Zieh bei mir ein!
Welcome, dear treasure!
Love and Faith make room
For You in my pure heart;
Move in with me!
19:14 6.Chorale
Der du bist dem Vater gleich,
Führ hinaus den Sieg im Fleisch,
Daß dein ewig Gotts Gewalt
In uns das krank Fleisch enthalt.
You who are equal to the Father,
Bring forth victory in the flesh,
So that Your eternal divine power
Be contained in our ailing flesh.
21:10 7.Aria
Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen
Wird Gottes Majestät verehrt.
Denn schallet nur der Geist darbei,
So ist ihm solches ein Geschrei,
Das er im Himmel selber hört.
Even with subdued, weak voices
God’s majesty is honoured.
For even if only the spirit sounds,
It makes such a cry to Him
As He Himself hears in heaven.
30:05 8.Chorale
Lob sei Gott dem Vater ton,
Lob sei Gott sein’m eingen Sohn,
Lob sei Gott dem Heilgen Geist
Immer und in Ewigkeit!
Praise be given to God the Father,
Praise be to God His only Son,
Praise be to God the Holy Spirit
Always and in eternity!

superbe !
The chorus at the beginning is spectacular. The male voices are powerful combined with female voices. The quality is the best, comparing with other Bach versions of this cantata.
I would like to know those 30 people who did not appreciate this Cantata and especially why. Probably they can do better... for sure.
You are all fantastic!!!
pure beauty!
Very nice, at times moving.
Maravilloso
Herzliches Dankbar!!!

Part I
1. CHOR
Resonate joyfully on high, up to the lofty stars,
you tongues, as you now are glad in Zion!
Yet, wait! The sound need not travel far,
for the Lord of glory himself draws near.
2. CHORAL (Sopran, Alt)
Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,
der Jungfrauen Kind erkannt,
des sich wundert alle Welt,
Gott solch Geburt ihm bestellt.
Come now, Savior of the heathens,
the Virgin’s child made known,
at which the whole world wonders
how God would appoint him such a birth.
3. ARIA (Tenor)
Die Liebe zieht mit sanften Schritten
sein Treugeliebtes allgemach.
Gleichwie es eine Braut entzücket,
wenn sie den Bräutigam erblicket,
so folgt ein Herz auch Jesu nach.
Love draws near its truly beloved
steadily, with tender strides.
Just as a bride is beguiled
when she once glimpses the groom
so too the heart anticipates Jesus.
4. CHORAL
Zwingt die Saiten in Cythara
und laßt die süße Musica
ganz freudenreich erschallen,
daß ich möge mit Jesulein,
dem wunderschönen Bräutgam mein,
in steter Liebe wallen!
Singet,
springet,
jubilieret, triumphieret, dankt dem Herren!
Groß ist der König der Ehren.
Engage the strings of the zither
and let sweet music
resound fully rich with joy,
that I might with baby Jesus,
my wondrously fine bridegroom,
overflow in constant love!
Sing,
spring,
jubilate, triumph, thank the Lord!
Great is the King of Glory.

Part II
5. ARIA (Baß)
Willkommen, werter Schatz!
Die Lieb und Glaube machet Platz
vor dich in meinem Herzen rein,
zieh bei mir ein!
Welcome, precious treasure!
Love and faith prepare a place
for you in my heart, pure,
inhabit me!
6. CHORAL (Tenor)
Der du bist dem Vater gleich,
führ hinaus den Sieg im Fleisch,
daß dein ewig Gotts Gewalt
in uns das krank Fleisch enthalt.
As you are one with the Father,
lead your conquest in the flesh,
that through God’s eternal might you
may constrain the fouled flesh within us.
7. ARIA (Sopran)
Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen
wird Gottes Majestät verehrt.
Denn schallet nur der Geist darbei,
so ist ihm solches ein Geschrei,
das er im Himmel selber hört.
Even with subdued, feeble voices
God's majesty will be revered.
For when the Spirit resounds along
then it is to him such a roar
that he can hear it all the way in heaven
8. CHORAL
Lob sei Gott, dem Vater, g'ton,
lob sei Gott, sein'm eingen Sohn,
lob sei Gott, dem Heilgen Geist,
immer und in Ewigkeit!
Praise be to God, the Father intoned
praise be to God, his only Son,
praise be to God, the Holy Spirit,
forever and in eternity!
Maravilhoso (Brasil)
When you are J.S. Bach and simply decide to compose a cantata as a present for your teacher's birthday.

Great 😊
The soprano, Zsuzsi Toth, is the star of this performance.
Bach's music is like Lego. The trick is that only Bach knows how to put the bricks together.
the worst comment ever
Just visit they website, allofbach: I am pretty sure you find "O ewiges Feuer, O Ursprung der Liebe" there...
Smuk musik og flot solosang.....
I'd probably go crazy sitting there.
❤❤❤❤❤
Even if Christianity disappears, Bach will remain!
❤❤❤❤👏
Such warmth and enjoyment comes across in that opening Chorus .
That's often not the case in many ensembles .
Why not show some humanity ? This isn't music written for Artificial Intelligence Bots after all !
