The function of wearing ring is to avoid flow from the HP side of the pump into the LP suction side through the clearance between the impeller and volute. It helps increasing the efficiency of the pump.

Starting a centrifugal pump for the first time can be a troublesome experience unless the plant crew has made a thorough check of the unit during and after installation, there are probably more unusual accidents and troubles during initial starting of a pump than at almost any other time.

There are two standards to design the pump, first is ISO and second is API. For ISO pump, impeller/casing wear ring will bot be applicable. And for API there are many models available and wear rings will designing accordingly as suitable.
