Wow you really have no idea how difficult it is to LEAD an orchestra until you see a video like this. I learned so much. Mo. Jaarvi is very adept at showing colors and character as well as joy and exuberance. Thanks for this.
Just a tip for young conductors: don’t wear white shirts, the baton gets lost in it.
I thought there were enough advices in the video already.
Good point
Yes! True
Carl Maria von Weber Ouvertüre zu «Der Freischütz» op. 77
Antonín Dvořák Sinfonie Nr. 6 D-Dur op. 60
Béla Bartók 4. Satz Intermezzo interrotto aus «Konzert für Orchester» Sz 116
Josef Strauss «Sphärenklänge», Walzer op. 235
Ludwig van Beethoven Violinromanze Nr. 2 F-Dur op. 50
Gabriel Fauré Elegie c-Moll op. 24 für Violoncello und Orchester
It’s nice to see a young conductor use so much facial expression. Makes a truckload of difference to the players. Judicious use of melded vs basic beating, nicely done. We learn early not to use melded gestures b/c they ‘look’ good but b/c they get the results we want.
Every word mr Järvi said is worth a fortune.
Thanks!
Great orchestra and Mr Jarvis is for sure one of the great conductors alive. No need to pick on high school bands, though. I am sure every brass and woodwind player in the orchestra started in a high school band somewhere. That small commentary aside, great job!
The young woman from Poland needs to find the same speaking voice as her conducting voice. Great job 👏
Also, videographer, why do you keep zooming in on the other student’s face instead if the one on the podium…?

I am an absolut ignorat. I don't even know how to read music. Here is my question, about the first student.
What's wrong about looking like an amateur if that helps the band to get the conductor's tempo?
As an amateur band leader, you tend to give all the players instructions: entrances, dynamics, accents and so on. Most of the players are amateurs who'll need a helping hand. Professionals don't need that. They want a clear start and framework and the rest they'll figure out. Even though maestro Järvi invests a lot of time in getting the opening bars correct, for the rest he advises the young conductor to minimize his gestures as much as possible.
Compare it to coaching a very good sports team: you don't teach Messi, LeBron James or Tom Brady the basics anymore. You position them and give them a task. And the better your team, the less you interfere with the process.
Karajan said: "Conducting is the art of knowing, when not to disturb the orchestra."
The point is - and that's getting clear from the following hints of Järvi - keep it calm, clear and short. No orchestra on that level needs - in that piece - a whole bar of nothing for getting the tempo. Watch Kleibers "Otello", he is opening the opera with a whole bar of conducting without producing music. In THAT situation with such an explosive beginning, you need a whole bar.

As Woody Allen said:" I hire good actors and get out of their way".
@@homeofcreation Exactly!
Is that Benjamin Zander with the scarf sitting out in the audience in a separate chair near the doors to the right of the shot over the student’s shoulder?

Really? A twenty minute intermission? Never heard of editing?
Wrist please
Relax left hand
There are few things as uninteresting as a woman conductor. The second candidate is NOT listening to anything Mr Jarvi has to say and she wouldn't care. She"s just living her fantasy in front of the orchestra. The asian girl has no clue, no rithm, no salt. She will not get anywhere. The orchestra is actually reactig to Mr Jarvi conducting behind her.
Else, I Love Mr. Jarvi!
