The formats for cricket work as follows:
Test cricket: Each team bats and bowls twice with no limit on how long they can bat for. The match is time limited to 5 days, and if the 5 days elapses before the result, the game is automatically a draw, regardless of who was in the better position. Whoever scores more runs in their innings, assuming the innings are completed with 10 wickets (outs), wins.
ODI: Stands for One Day International, each team bats once, with a 50 over limit. An over is when the bowler bowls 6 balls from one end. The innings either finishes after 50 overs or if a team is all out, the team with the most runs wins. Games last approx 7 hours.
T20: Same as ODI but each team bats for 20 overs each. Games typically last 3 hours, and risk taking is encouraged for batsman, meaning there are more big shots. This form is most popular with a casual audience, whilst test cricket is considered the pinnacle for purists.

A leg cutter/break cuts from the leg. So, as a right arm bowler to a right arm batsman, the ball would move from the right to the left. If it moves in the air it is known as out-swing. Off cutters/breaks cuts from the off, so again, if a right handed bowler is bowling to a right handed bat, the ball moves from the left to the right. If it moves in the air it is known as in-swing.
Starc is a left handed bowler, so his leg cutters move in to right handed batsmen, away to left-handers, and vice versa

3:25 MCG is big, the dust will help spinners to skid the ball a wee bit, the hard pitch will help with bounce, though it is evened out by a very cold day.
3:30 Good call. Mark Nicholas said it best on Cricket 07 (I have that OG game on my PS2): "9 times out of 10, you win the toss, and you will say 'bat first', and on the 10th occasion (when the pitch is green, grassy and sunny), you'd think about it, and you'd probably still bat first."

11:09 Cross seam is when you hold the ball on the rough side of the ball, with the seam slanted slightly. It's like pitching a 4-seam fastball, but none of your fingers touch any seams at all. It is good for a dusty pitch because if the ball lands on the shiny side of the ball, it could stay low and skid. If it somehow hit the seam, it could kick up a bit. It's probably just me, but I'd actually think about getting some pace behind it.

Spin bowling, especially leg spin is the most enjoyable type of bowling in this. The control system of rotating the thumb stick to generate spin is a really good way of doing it compared to other cricket games.

Normally a fast bowler holds the ball with the seem running vertically and along their fingers, so when the bowl they can get swing in the air or some seam movement because the ball bounces on the seem (which means it will bounce more). So if it is a cross seem, they are holding the ball so that the seem isn't vertical and their fingers are across the seem. When they bowl the ball tends to "wobble" in the air. This has two effects, one it won't swing as much - so a bowler might do this if they are struggling to control the swing. Second, it's a bit random how the ball lands when it bounces, so it can bounce low, or at an unusual angle.

Sorry if this has been explained before but key difference between Cricket and Baseball tactics is the relative value of runs and outs. My understanding of baseball in a game each team will have 27 outs and will probably score less than 10 runs. In a one day cricket match each team has a maximum of 10 outs but would hope to score in the hundreds of runs. 10 runs would be considered poor for one batsman. But in baseball runs are more expensive than outs. In cricket outs are much more expensive than outs. The fielding team will generally be quite happy to exchange 2-3 sixes in an over for an out (at least at the start of a game and depending on the batsman)

  • @samuelsisti4849

A yorker is a ball that basically lands where the batsman's feet are. A full ball is basically anything that is hitting the stumps. A "good" length ball is a ball, typically, hitting the top of the stumps - depending on the type of pitch - and a short ball is simply anything pitching shorter than that. It can be easily hit balls around chest height, or an actual "bouncer" a ball used to intimidate; aimed at the head, neck, ribs, or armpit.

Slow bowlers do spin bowling( ball turns after hitting ground) .Pace bowlers do swing bowling( u need some pace for the ball to swing/move in the air) .Cutters are basically spin bowling for fast bowlers, different technique.
Cross seam is a grip where the seam of the ball is facing perpendicular to the batsman .In real life, this grip makes the ball move slower but good for cutter and spin bowling

Just to explain because let's be honest The Ashes is a bizarre name for such a major sporting event, it's a best of 5 Test match (5 day match) series played between England and Australia.
When Australia had beaten England for the first time in 1882 an English newspaper satirically suggested that English Cricket was dead and the cremated ashes would be taken to Australia. The England Captain at the time said they would travel to Australia to reclaim those Ashes. After England subsequently won in Australia comically their captain was presented with small urn which represents those Ashes (actually the urn is said to have the cremated Ashes of a bail). The Ashes has been played for ever since with a replica of the urn (the fragile original is kept in a museum) used as trophy.
Oh and when it's on it's amazing. The 2005 series in England being widely considered the greatest test series in the history of all international cricket with Game 2 at Edgbaston being arguably the greatest Test Match in history.

  • @samuelsisti4849
    @samuelsisti4849 4 ปีที่แล้ว

As for the catching positions, you will see more catchers at those "short" positions (the men with the helmets) for "spin" bowlers, the bowlers that try and get the ball to move off the ground. Those bowlers are trying to hit the edge of your bat, have it bounce off your body, and into the air where those "short" fielders will catch it. The slips, typically, are for faster bowlers, where the ball carries further off an edge, and the bowlers are again trying to draw a false shot and get the edge but with movement in the air, and not off the ground.
This is just an example however, as both types of bowlers use both fielding and bowling tactics.

  • @nileshchaudhari438
    @nileshchaudhari438 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Cutters are a way of spinning the ball by the Pace bowler, their main skill is SWING (Outswing moves ball away from the Batsman, and InSwing moves the ball in towards the batsman) Swing is "in the air", as in the ball swings in the air in the direction the bowler holds the ball with the seam pointing. Cutter is when the bowler cuts this fingers across the ball while bowling and expects the ball to cut after pitching (Offcutter is when the ball moves in towards the batsman after pitching) and (Leg Cutter is when the ball moves away from the batsman after pitching). The logic behind the naming is that for any batsman, if he has to take a shot across his legs, is the Leg Side of the Pitch, and the other side is known as the Off Side of the pitch, imagine the field as a circle and a Diameter going through the pitch dividing the field into two equal halves, when the batsman leans in to bat, the side his head and bat leans is the off side and the side where his butt points is the Leg Side of the field.
The next thing is When a Spinner Bowls, his skill is that he can spin the ball, some bowlers are skilled to turn it one way, some the other way. I'll give an example, Shane Warne is a Leg Spinner (he spins the ball from Leg Side towards the Off Side, i.e. The ball pitches close to the batsman and turns away from him. Similarly, Muthaiah Muralidharan (Off Spinner) spins the ball from the Off Side towards the Leg Side i.e. the ball pitches away from the batsman spinning in towards the batsman. Now, the reason the Fielders are so close to the batsman while the Spinner bowls(40-50Mph) is that the speed of the ball is less compared to a Pace bowler(80-90Mph) and hence when the batsman mishits the ball there is a chance it will fall before the fielders have a chance to catch it. Also, with the amount of spin off the pitch, there is a chance that batsman will edge it instead of hitting it properly, which is why there are many fielders surrounding the batsman instead of standing in an umbrella of sorts when the Pace bowler bowls, because the Pace bowler swings the ball with 2 intentions, either to hit the stumps or to swing it away from the batsman and with the extra pace, the ball is likely to fly quicker and with a trajectory enough for one of the Slip fielders to catch (The area next to the Wicket Keeper on the off side, is where the Slip Fielders stand to catch any edged ball that the Out Swinging Ball might generate from the Batsman's bat. As you already know now, Each team has two innings, and the goal is simple, score max number of runs before all your players are OUT(each OUT is called a Wicket and each team has 10 Wickets before the team is declared ALL OUT) or if the total number of Overs are completed.

As to the different strategies, this is one of the things that make Cricket captains the most influential team captains in sport. Especially at the international level the team, with the assistance of the coaching staff, will have pre-laid plans for every player, where to bowl to them and what fields to set, based on analysis of what kind of deliveries they are weak to, etc. However, if these plans are not working, then any adjustments to these plans come from the captain. Picking which bowler will bowl, where every fielder is standing, balancing an attacking field (trying to get wickets) against the need for a defensive one (trying to stop runs being scored), all of this lands on the captain, although naturally the bowlers will have a significant input. It is very common, especially after first being given the role, for a captain's stats to dip compared to when they were not captain, as they have such a mental load tactically in the field.
One of the things most people don't realise about the shorter formats of the game, such as one day and T20, is the fielding restrictions placed on the captains such as having a minimum or maximum number of fielders within the inner ring on the field, or on one side of the pitch or the other, or even on where the bowler is allowed to bowl. These restrictions are what make the game much quicker scoring than the 5 day tests, as the captains are not allowed to set some of the fields that they can in Tests which allow them to dry up the run scoring and ramp up the mental pressure on the batsman and force a mistake.
Constant field changes so that a batsman doesn't have a consistently safe place to hit a ball, making a favoured shot of that batsman a consistently risky proposition, alternating bowlers against them to not allow a batsman to fall into a rhythm, all of these are potent weapons of a good captain. This is also why you will see teams sometimes specifically pick combinations of batsmen to make work for the opposing side, for example having a right and left handed batsman as your opening pair can make a lot of work for an opposing captain/team as the entire fielding side will have to reset each time the batsmen change the strike.
In short, while everyone else is just playing cricket, the two captains are also playing a mental game of chess against each other, at the same time, just with unequal pieces and a near infinite number of squares. Its the most underappreciated skill in cricket and the best thing about the longer form of the game.

More related to the game this - Ashes Cricket only has the proper teams for Australia and England, rest of them are fake players. Its an easy fix just gotta download the community teams.
Also this is just a preference thing, but I like to set my batting controls to classic rather than default. Default feels like a video game to me, just per-meditate an area and time a button press right to hit it. With classical, the sticks control your footwork and shot selection, and the buttons do nothing (except A for leave). Feels way more natural, have to watch the ball, do the right footwork, timing and shot. Its way harder but way more rewarding, and it almost feels like I'm actually batting (except I ain't utter shithouse in the game while I can't time a drive to save my life IRL)

    Hi Alex,
Just saw your videos about the cricket matches and this one where you are playing the video game to get an idea how the game is play.
    Few basics about the cricket.
Cricket has three formats. The teams that are top teams must have test cricket playing status given by ICC (International Cricket Council). These teams play with each other to qualify for the World Cup (the top 8 team automatically qualify for world cup others have to play in playoffs to qualify).
    The three formats are
1 - [First Format] Test (this is the original version of the game when it initially started although it used to longer). This is a 5 days match where 2 team playing generally Bat & Ball Twice. The batting team is not limited by overs, as long as they have players on the pitch, they can continue to play as long as they wish. Generally team who have not been out declare themselves (they end the batting themselves to allow the other team to bowl). This is done because if the other team does not ball then there is a risk of a draw. Regardless of how good and dominate a team has been, at least one team must bat twice and all players of that team given out 2 times in a 5 day period otherwise there is no result and match is a draw. This is the longest format of the game as now
2 - [Second Format] International Match (One day Match) - This is a limited over match which means each batting team is limited for how many overs they are allowed to bat. Now a days the One day matches are played 50 over each team. For couple of decades now the World Cup is played for this format of the game. In the One day matches bowlers (pitchers) are limited to 10 overs per match (game), so in essence each team needs to have 5 bowlers at least. Most team will have 3 or 4 specialized bowlers and 1 or more all rounder (a player who is good with batting and bowling).
3 - [Third Format] T20 - Limited 20 over game, each side limited to bat of 20 overs only. This is the most latest format in order to promote cricket much more as this format last 3 to 4 hours max. Bowlers (pitchers) are limited to 4 overs in a match. Same concept of other format applies here as well. This format is a lot faster and compared to One day world cups, the T20 World Cups are lot more frequent as well. T20 World Cup happens every 2 years and One day World Cup take place every 4 years. I do not know about Test because I don't watch that format that often.
I know other people shared info about what each play means. I wanted to add the YORKER ball, Yorker balls are when the ball bounces on the batters feet or just before that. General bowlers use that to pick up wickets and its most suited for fast bowlers.
Anyways, I do wanted to share a bit a funny video of goof ups that has happened by players playing international matches. Here is the link for top 10 funny run outs

Late to the comment party but here are my 2 cents anyway.
    1. Ashes Cricket 2017 is the old game now. Cricket 2019 is the latest one.
    2. Cricket 2017 had some shots that the AI just could not react to. Reverse sweeping for 6 is just broken. Much harder to pull it off in 2019 as the AI will react better.
    3. Both are incredibly tough on the highest difficulty. With some practice, the 2nd hardest feels most satisfying.
    4. Both games have some silliness with the AI but these are still the best cricket games available.
    5. Both of these games from Big Ant Studios only managed to get the licences for Australia and England (hence the name). Rest of the teams are just placeholders and do not represent actual players. However, you can download the latest custom made teams with players, kits, stadiums etc. from the community feature.

When you have a lot of fielders in the slips (behind the batsman), the strategy is to bowl fast and wide. The batsman is forced to “chase” the ball in order to hit it, so there is the possibility that the ball will hit the edge and fly straight to a slip fielder for a catch. Fielders around the batsmen (fun fact: one of those positions is called silly point - you’d have to be silly to field there) are usually when a spin bowler is bowling. The idea is that the turning ball will catch the bat and either go straight up or come off the pad, giving a brief chance for the fielders to catch it. You should check out some close in catches - they are really good.
A fast bowler typically hits speeds of 140-150 kms (85-95 mph). Some hit above 150 regularly. Check out Brett Lee, Shaun Tait or Shoab Akhtar. The latter has the record for the fastest ball ever at 161.4 kph, or a touch over 100mph.

With field placements, it's a balance between defence (preventing runs being scored) and attack (taking wickets). If a batsman has only just started, or if the innings has only just started (or restarted after a break), then generally fielding positions will be more attacking, so there will be more fielders in positions where they might take a catch. The most common type of catch is from a batter 'edging' the ball behind him - hence why slips are generally 'aggressive' field placements, as are other positions close to the batter (e.g. silly point, short leg, etc.).
If a batsman is playing well, you'll see the team put more fielders in deep positions and fewer in catching positions, to try and prevent runs (which can frustrate some batters into playing more aggressively and taking more risks). In short-format cricket, there are a lot of restrictions on where fielders can be placed during some periods of the game (power plays) which prevent captains from being too defensive, etc. The rules around these change from time-to-time...
So the 'correct' field placements depend on the conditions (is it easier to take wickets or bat?), what kind of bowler there is (fast, spin (off-spin or leg-spin (they turn the opposite way to each other), medium-pace and the context of the match. You could also use specific strategies as some batters have particular strengths and weaknesses that are known. Or, if they're not looking like they're going to give any opportunities, dry up the scoring chances.
    Simple, really...

Also, in cricket, most of the time the bowler (especially in longer-format games) will bowl the same ball over and over as a 'stock' delivery and then use variations as a 'surprise', the bouncer being the most common. Deliberately bouncing the ball with the aim to hit the head is entirely legal in professional cricket, although an umpire may step in if they feel that there's a risk of serious harm or if it is being done with malice - or too frequently, or there is risk of injury because the player being bowled at is insufficiently skilled (generally though, a bowler will not bowl at the head of a poor batsman, even though technically there is nothing wrong with this).
A 'stock' ball might vary naturally due to the conditions, or the specifics of how that particular ball is bowled. Bowling is very, very difficult at the highest level and variations come with risk as if they are delivered badly, they create run-scoring opportunities. Yorkers (bowled to bounce at the feet) if delivered badly (and are still off the ground by the time they reach the batter in what is called a 'full toss') are particularly easy to hit, so are considered a risky, aggressive option. Cutters are generally used if the pitch is slow or if the team hasn't had much success for a long period.
In cricket, 90MPH (out of the hand) would be considered 'fast', 80-90 would be fast-medium, 70-80(ish) medium and 60 or less 'slow', although you do get spin bowlers that bowl at 65ish sometimes. Medium-pace bowlers can get a lot of movement off the ball in the air but aren't seen at the international level very much as it is generally quite a defensive tactic and are much more common at lower levels. A 'genuine' medium pace, specialist bowler is quite uncommon and at international level, somebody that bowls medium-pace is usually a specialist batsman that bowls a bit.
Spin bowlers are categorised into two camps, wrist and finger spin. Assuming they're right-handed, a wrist spinner is 'leg-spinner' and they turn the ball from the 'leg side' to the off side and a finger spinner is called an 'off spinner'. A wrist spinner delivers out of the back of the hand and can get a lot of turn - but it is very difficult to bowl accurately and is much less common than finger-spin. If a wrist spinner is left-handed, it's called 'left-arm unorthodox' bowling and if they are a left-handed finger spinner, it's 'left-arm orthodox'. Wrist spinners are generally slower than finger spinners, ranging (at high level) from about 45-55MPH, with off-spinners generally being around 55-65MPH.
As with everything, there are plenty of exceptions...

Not hard to learn. T20 means 20 overs each, ODIs/ListA are 50 overs each. Tests are the oldest form of cricket and are unlimited in how many overs a team face. In Tests teams have two innings, and their scores are added together.

The lag in the Indian fielding was because you were on easy, as was the ease in getting sixs. Practice your bowling to go away from the batsman rather than in tight at him. The ball going away causes the batsman to attack (ie take a risk) while coming back in he will always defend. Also 147km/h is 92mph so he is chugging it - very few bowlers have been over 100mph.

@RexyBing just wanted to explain all the three formats of cricket. So first is the longest format of cricket, then I shall talk about the shorter format and the final part I will talk about, let's say the medium format of cricket. So test cricket well its Simple. teams of 11 players each play a four-innings match, which may last up to five days. It is generally considered the most complete examination of a team's endurance and ability.
In order to win a Test match, the side bowling last must take all 10 of the opposition's wickets, otherwise the match will be drawn, regardless of the scores because the batting side's innings is not complete. And in order for the batting last team to win the test if the target is chasable say for example 2 days left or one day out of the 5 days left. And the batting team is able to make the target of runs before 10 wickets are taken (all out ) then they shall be victorious winning the test match.
In a Twenty20 game the two teams have a single innings each, which is restricted to a maximum of 20 overs. The aim of the first half is for the batting team to make as much runs as possible within 20 overs (1 over= 6 balls) to set the bowling team a target to chase down when it's their turn in the next half... If the bowling team get 10 players out within the 20 overs or less. Then they will have to settle with the amount of runs made and their target will be more restricted. Which is the job of the fielding and bowling side. In the second half/innings they swap over, the fielding team now try bat 20 overs and the team batting in the first half innings are now bowling and fielding in the second innings . The team batting second will try to chase the target runs set by the team that was batting first. Without loosing all 10 wickets within 20 overs. If 10 wickets are taken or the fielding/bowling team restrict the batting team to less runs than the target set. Then they win. If the second batting team chase the target down set they win the match. But if scores are level for example 1 run is left to win for a team batting 2nd and they have only the final ball of the match to face and they have not got all out (all out = 10 wickets). This means they still have wickets left in hand. If they can't make 1 run in that one ball. The match is a tie because there is no balls left and both teams have both made and ended on the same amount of runs, making it a draw/tie. one more run they would have made the target and won .
After a tie match a super over (1 over) is balled to decide the winner. Each team gets one over each. First half/innings the batting team try make as much runs as they can in 6 legitimate balls (one over) and a target is set then when the teams then switch and now the batting second team have to make the target set by the team batting first, if not then they loose the match. In each halves in a super over instead of 10 wickets only two players can be the maximum players that can be out. 50 overs is basically played the same as 20 overs format of cricket but a little longer. It consists of maximum of 50 overs for each innings/half instead of 20 overs. Hope this helped your understanding of the game.

Test cricket - 5 days x 6 hours of play = 30 hours. Played in white clothes. 10 countries are test match ranked. Viable crowd support only in England and Australia. Survives in India, South Africa and New Zealand by TV support. By far the most popular form in England and Australia. The original game until the first ODI in 1971 in Melbourne. The recent come from behind win by England over Australia at Headingly in August 2019 is considered by some pundits to be the greatest match in the 138 year history. The test match in Brisbane in November 2015 England v Australia is considered to be amongst the highest of sport drama when English batsmen admitted later to literally fearing for their lives facing express pace bowler, Mitchell Johnson (see TH-cam highlights).
One day international (ODI) 1 day x 7 hours. Crazy popular in the sub-continent. Well attended in England. Close to zero following in Australia where it is considered to lack the intrigue and drama of test cricket.
T20 3 hours. Invented in England in the 2000s. T20 overcomes ODIs biggest negative of 7 hours in a single day (imagine watching your favourite band for 7 hours and again next week and . . . - too much). T20 is cricket's football, baseball duration game coming about 133 years after international test cricket. It is cricket's first 'product' to commercially succeed at a club level i.e not just international contests. T20's compressed time frame has dramatically expanded player skills e.g. more slow spin bowlers back into the game as attacking weapons and provides the 21st century pop to accompany test cricket's classic rock.

Great channel, interesting insight from the American perspective on Cricket.
I noticed in another video you said you'd like to do reaction to lots of other popular sports, I hope you do.
As an Aussie I love cricket, but we have very little exposure to (inferior 😜 ) US sports here, and your insights in other global sports would be as interesting as for Cricket.
Also seems like many of your cricket recommendations are coming from our Indian and Pakistani friends, they'll dominate your time with those (you guys know you will), happens to other cricket react channels, and you wind up with just a India/Pakistan highlight reel 😉.
So be sure to branch out even with your cricket videos.
I'll give you one. I've seen you watch a few catching videos and comment that it's the aspect you're most interested in learning more about, right? So, I'll just give you one name, trust me, it's essential you view his work, both catches AND run outs, if you're interested in defensive plays in cricket:
    Jonty Rhodes.
Run that name through the TH-cam search bar, you WONT be disappointed.

Hi, interesting commentary from a professional perspective - thanks. An aspect of cricket that might not be immediately evident from short videos is the psychological interaction between batsmen and the bowlers. Depending on the format, they can face each other for hours.
I've picked a video that alludes to that. th-cam.com/video/RFLONbsmkak/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=England%26WalesCricketBoard The section of interest is from 04:00 to 08:50. The batsmen here is one of the world's true greats facing an unpredictable and varied bowler who can really deliver when on form.
You stated that no much in baseball is 'reactionary'. Have a ponder on the time from bat to the slip cordon. Sometimes the ball slows off the bat, sometimes it gets a push. Either way, a few yards deeper than the wicket-keeper with no protection. Travel time is around 0.5 seconds.
I played cricket in Oregon for a season in 2006. In my fielding position I could see Mt. Hood over one wicket and Mt. St. Helens over long-on. Had a blast!
