      If you also really want to get a grip on the laws of cricket, I recommend watching a mini series by Stephen Fry. It basically just explains a few important laws that are the most often seen in a single game of cricket. I would also recommend watching many highlights of cricket matches (especially tests where they wear the white clothing, and these go on for 5 days straight) as you can also listen to the commentators and what they say to truly get a grip on the game and its many technicalities and wonders. I recommend watching the playlist below as it is one of the oldest sporting traditions in the world and is the most highly renowned version of cricket.

      I know. It is sad, especially during the virus lockdowns it would be nice if the ICC and Indian cricket board released some highlights. I especially want to see some highlights from 2011 World Cup where NZ beat SA in the quarter final. I've never seen any highlights of that game and it was one of the classics. Why withhold them? Also there used to be an amazing 20min highlight package of Shane bond at the 2003 World Cup but that got taken down a year or so ago. It was my fav cricket video.

    Hey bro, Despite the differences in delivery action, the delivery speeds are similar for both sports with the fastest bowlers and pitchers propelling the ball in the region of 95-100 mph (150-160 km/h): the fastest recorded cricket delivery is 100.2 mph (161.26 km/h)
    *Unpredictability*
    The most common reason for a person to get hurt is when he cannot predict the path of a ball.
    A cricket ball is bowled off the pitch, which makes it all the more unpredictable.
    Although there is some unpredictability in a curve-ball bowled in baseball, it is not as much unpredictable as that of a cricket ball off a pitch. It has both unpredictability of the swing in the air (sideways) and lateral (vertical).
    This unpredictability makes facing the cricket ball, especially bowled by a fast bowler, more
    dangerous.

    You're right about it being more difficult to hit a baseball sweetly because the bat is round - but you're hitting full tosses (ie the ball doesn't bounce) - In cricket the bowler makes the ball bounce which makes the trajectory of the ball much harder to judge for the batsman - so it kind of evens out in terms of difficulty

    • @philmccracken179
      @philmccracken179 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it doesn’t Andy. Hitting a baseball thrown by a professional hitter is the hardest thing to do in sports. You could take anybody from the stands and by luck they make a 3pointer in basketball or kick a ball thru the uprights in Football but nobody would be able to hit a home run in baseball

    • @qman2261
      @qman2261 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@philmccracken179 The other key difference as I see it is that in cricket the batter chooses where to play the ball - back over the bowlers head, guided down to 3rd man, swept to the boundary, cut to the off-side etc depending on the ball bowled, whereas in baseball it seems that the batter has far less control over where the ball goes - he swings and hopes for a good connection and that seems pretty much it..

  • @RichardGadsden

    I've held both a cricket ball and a baseball - they're pretty much the same size and weight. The cricket ball is very slightly harder (but it softens slightly in play, so it's a touch softer by the end of the game).
    OK, I looked them up - cricket ball is 5.5 to 5.75 ounces, baseball is 5.0 to 5.25 (so the cricket ball is marginally heavier)
    cricket ball is 8.81 to 9 inches in circumference, baseball is 9.0 to 9.25 (so the cricket ball is marginally smaller).
    Both are leather balls with a cork interior, so the slightly denser cork used for cricket balls makes them a touch harder.
    And yes, catching a cricket ball without a glove hurts; this is why you'll hear commentators talk about soft hands; there are techniques you can learn to make the ball stick and to avoid it hurting.

    I often hear people say that hitting in baseball is much harder than in cricket.
    On any individual pitch (or bowl in cricket) this is true but it's important to remember that success is defined very differently.
    In baseball getting on base without getting out is considered a success. You only need to do this one time each time you bat, and if you do this 1/4 times you're considered pretty good.
    Conversely in cricket most times you need to bat for 100s of balls to have a successful innings.

    • @philmccracken179
      @philmccracken179 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right and when a guy is scoring runs he’s also hitting dot balls. So even if he goes 1 0 0 0 4 0. That only 33% of hits are successful. It’s the same thing. It’s just baseball players don’t have the luxury to tap a ball to a fielder, not run and bat again.

    This was perhaps a bit too heavy on boundary catches. The best really are from ones closer in, when the ball can still be going at 90 mph+, often taken one-handed, while diving. See (bit late to react now) here, as an example th-cam.com/video/WX9fRb9M_bY/w-d-xo.html And no, a catch doesn't hurt*. Unlike it baseball, you aren't just letting the ball hit hit your hand. If you take it right, it kind of cushions the impact. Cricket players are always a bit mystified as to why baseball fielders need a glove. The guys right behind the stumps (wicket keeper) do wear gloves, but they will be taking dozens of catches every day.
    * get it wrong, and yes it can hurt. It can snap fingers.

    Just so you know (no mean tone), the bat is not completely flat, there is some curve on it (from left to right if the bat is upright). If you heard what the commentator started saying @3:52, you should also watch that (Herschel Gibbs @2007wc), it's slightly more impressive than this because it was a longer game (& a few years earlier), so the game wasn't as attacking as here, also this was at the end if the innings so players are more likely to slog (swing/hit & hope), whereas he was playing higher up the order, meaning you have to be more careful so as not to lose your wicket! The only other time it happened before that was by a west Indian in black & white times haha! The chucking the ball back inside the rope is not common per se, but has become more of a thing since the early/mid 2000's! One recent catch you should look up is the Spiderman catch by ab de villiers: he jumped up right on the edge & landed inside, although what you should really see him do is bat, known as Mr360 cause he can hit the ball anywhere in your regards to it being more challenging but also optional, you have to see him score 150runs off only 33balls (S.africa vs the wi), & he once got 149 off nearly the same. But there are many more batting, bowling & fielding performances which I'm sure you will slowly find along your path

    Two things to help you - 'spin' bowlers and 'swing' bowlers are different things. You often refer to 'spin' bowlers as 'swing' bowlers. Spin bowlers spin it off the wicket, so it bounces and then turns. Swing bowlers swing it in the air like a curve ball in baseball, so it swings before it bounces. The best swing bowlers can swing it before it bounces and then hit the hard, tall seam to make it move again off the wicket, Not spin, but 'seam' movement.
    The other thing was about these outfield catches where they throw the ball up to themselves or another player. It's really not all that common, I think it's just because you're watching a fair few of these great catch videos lately and they'll always pop up in those vids.
    Keep it up, I'm enjoying this!
    PS. I wrote my comment before finishing the video, but you also spoke about how in basketball, players have to regain their footing inside the court before touching it. It actually USED to be like that in cricket, where you'd have to establish yourself back in the field before touching the ball, but when this became a more regular thing that they changed the rules. (This throwing-the-ball-up-on-the-boundary-rope-and-catching-it-inside-the-rope phenomenon is actually very recent in cricketing terms. You never used to see it, but T20 cricket made it a more regular thing.)

    I taught my 10 years old son how to catch a baseball without gloves as it's hard to find a cricket ball here. He got so much used to it that when he had to play baseball as part of his physical education class, he asked his coach permission to field without a glove and then caught the balls barehanded and converted double plays as well. The coach thought he was crazy that's 10 years old kid is doing all that.

    Yeah sometimes when you catch a cricket ball, it hurts. From a young age they teach you the right techniques on how to catch. The most common technique to reduce injury risk, is to catch with soft hands. Basically what that means is to meet the ball before it arrives, and as it makes impact, you follow a line so it takes away some of the impact. You'll see wicketkeepers (person behind wickets with gloves) commonly use this technique whenever the ball is missed where they'll get their hands out in front of their body, take the ball and then draw their hands back in towards their body. outfield/boundary catches are very difficult as the ball tends to dip and swing and spin and it makes it so hard to catch and you really have to be light on your feet in case you need to change and adapt. You should look at more close in-field catches, they are extremely difficult as well, because the balls come off the bats at around 90+ MPH and it's purely just reflex in their incredible catches.

    I’m really enjoying your reactions and seeing you learn cricket as a baseball player.
    Here’s some things that you might find interesting in comparing and learning the sport.
    The bigger sweet spot on the bat makes batting a bit easier but what compensates that is that the bowler can bowl it anywhere you can reach. Out wide, at the stumps, at your toes or even at your head, so as a batsman you need to be ready for anything, playing so your weight can go to your back foot or front foot if you want to score.
    There’s no strikeouts and you don’t have to run if you hit it, so knowing when to defend and when to attack is super important, trying to hit everything for 6 is considered reckless as the chances are you’ll probably go out and then can’t score anything. Instead you can try and manipulate where the fielders stand, tempt them close to stop you running or push them back to stop the boundary, then hit the gaps and cash in. Or as the bowler, make them hit it to you put your fielders.
    Also, there’s basically only one ball used for each innings, so when it’s new it swings and then when it’s roughed up it usually stops and batting becomes easier, though taking care of the ball can get it to swing longer or again. On top of the changing ball, every pitch bounces and spins slightly differently so batters and bowlers both need to make sure they know how it’s reacting to get an advantage.
    Hope that’s interesting and helps a bit

    Also in cricket when your hit the ball the middle isn’t at the very end like a baseball bat. Each bat has a different middle and picks up differently. Basically what I’m saying is these games are similar but no where near the same. The base concepts of hitting a ball that has been bowled or pitched and running is the same but, the finer points of both the games are completely different.

    One main difference, however, is that the ball in cricket is harder and heavier in weight. The legal weight for the ball in baseball is from 5 to 5.25 ounces (142 to 149 g); whereas the ball in cricket must weigh between 5.5 and 5.8 ounces (156 and 164 g).

  • @handsolo1209

    The 360 field is a 50/50 thing between more places to hit the ball to, but also more places for the fielding team to set traps. The fielding team will position fielders in specific places and the bowler will bowl a plan to try and make the batter hit it in to the trap rather than just aiming at the stumps. Most outs in cricket are not direct hits on the stumps by the bowler, but a batter not hitting the ball where he wants it to go and hitting it where the bowler and his fielding team wants it to go. Imagine in Baseball if a pitcher threw every pitch in a way that meant any hit was going to right field, so the defense had no left fielder and had a deep and shallow right fielder. There's a huge gap on the left, but unless you are really lucky or the pitcher throws a bad one, the ball ain't going there.

    • @philmccracken179

      In baseball that’s called the “shift” buddy. Sometimes they leave the entire right side empty. So what are you talking about? And baseball pitchers pitch to induce ground balls when the situation calls for it. Man you cricket people talk so arrogantly about baseball but you don’t know anyh

    • @handsolo1209
      @handsolo1209 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philmccracken179 Well, "buddy", I know more about baseball than you know about cricket, so rather than cum in your panties about "Another damn alien is attacking muh country", try to gain some comprehension skills and process what I wrote.
      At NO time during a baseball game will ALL fielders move to one side of the field. At NO time in baseball will a SS suddenly be 5 yards from the batter and between the batter and 3B inside the diamond. At NO time will 1B be stood level with the pitcher and 10 yards off the field. The conical shape of the baseball field limits very much where fielders can and will position themselves. A 360 field makes defending that field much more difficult, so it much less a game of "shifting the outfield" and more a game of patience and setting fielders in very specific places to set a trap. Pitchers in baseball may well try to induce a ground ball or a high fly ball, but it is not exactly the same as setting 4 fielders at 45 degrees behind the batter and trying to get him to nick the ball specifically there with a millisecond for the fielder to react. Baseball is more about fielders playing the percentages with positioning and knowing a line drive will go to X,Y or Z and I have to cover all 3 and a pop up will give the OF time to get underneath it because each covers a zone of the OF with a foul line as barrier. In cricket you can stand in X position, but the ball could go 40 yards wide of you and it's still your ball with nobody else anywhere near you to cover you. The 360 field means the ball can go behind the catcher and you better damn run after it because there are no foul lines to give you no need to chase the ball.
      I have never in any way tried to imply that baseball is easy or is not a sport with extreme levels of skill and a high degree of strategy. I will however maintain that cricket involves more strategy, more variables and more stamina. The sports both come from the exact same source and have a lot in common, but like Rugby & NFL also have enough differences to make them distinct from each other. There is room for both and none is "better" than the other, it's just what a person prefers over the other.
