    Amorphis base most of their songs on an ancient scripture from Finland called the Tuonela if I'm not mistaken. As far as I can remember this song is about a king who died in battle and his mother called the bee from the cosmos and the bee started a colony in the kings skull, and the honey brought the king back to life...

    • @punkjay4681
      @punkjay4681 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      The epic is called Kalevala. Tuonela is the afterworld.

      I quess i cannot put links, so google this
      "The Mother, the Bee, the River’s Edge: A Story from The Kalevala"
      A cartoon of the story 🙂
      "This comic strip is an adaptation of part of the first Lemminkäinen cycle in the Finnish epic, The Kalevala. The Kalevala is an adaptation of the oral folklore of Karelia and Finland written by Elias Lönnrot and is considered a major cornerstone of Finnish identity and culture. I started reading The Kalevala to get a better context for some of the metal music I listened to and found myself drawn to the women in these narratives. To me, they were as interesting (if not more so) than the male heroes. Lemminkäinen’s mother, in particular, is my favorite character, despite not being given a name herself. In this comic, I hoped to capture her own heroic journey and how her son’s happy ending did not necessarily lead to her own."

    This is one of my favourite song from Amorphis. They come from Finland and the Bee is related to old Finnish epos Kalevala. Great reaction as always.

    Amorphis is from Finland, with 4 members, and was pure growls & death metal. The third album, Tales From The Thousand Lakes came out and sparked an entire genre by incorporating clean vocals. Each album is different (hence amorphous) and they currently use one vocalist, started with one vocalists (he shifted more to playing and now only does any vocals live as appropriate) but they did two for a while. Then this vocalist joined and they went with one guy who does both growl & clean (other guy i mentioned growls on stage when cleans are also going). I've been listening to this band since 1994, seen them live 4 times, and have a TON of autographed stuff, including a 6-string Dean bass. If they pass your way, go. You won't be disappointed.

    This was a fantastic reaction fellas!
    To give you the lowdown here. Amorphis consists of Tomi Joutsen, Esa Holopainen, Tomi Koivusaari, Santeri Kallio, Jan Rechberger, and Olli-Pekka Laine.
    The general narrative of their songs comes from the Finnish national epic known as "The Kalevala", which weaves an epic tale about the Earth's creation. It describes the controversies and retaliatory voyages between the peoples of the land of Kalevala called Väinölä and the land of Pohjola and their various protagonists and antagonists, as well as the construction and robbery of the mythical wealth-making machine Sampo.
    This particular song is based on a piece of a piece of that story known as the Lemminkäinen Cycle. Lemminkäinen is killed while hunting for the "Swan of Tuonela", and he falls in. Tuonela is the river of death. His mother goes searching for him and pulls the pieces of Lemminkäinen out of the river with a rake, and stitched him back together, but he would not return to life.
    So she beseeches the sky god, Ukko, to return her son to life. When she receives no answer, she asks a bee to fly to heaven and retrieve the honey from Ukko's halls. The bee returns with the honey, and Lemminkäinen is thus revived.
    I have seen these guys love multiple times, and would very highly recommend doing a track from their "Live at Helsinki Ice Hall" album. It will give you a chance to hear just how talented their vocalist Tomi Joutsen really is. I would personally pick "Black Winter Day", "Bad Blood", or "Sampo".

      @@diego_meira This is a very good point!

    • @mattitu
      @mattitu ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pekka Kainulainen himself has said: "Hi, this text is not a Finnish folk tale. Who know's if there were this kind of a tale somewhere...but it just came to my mind during the writing session when making lyrics for the album. Inspiration or dreaming. The Silent Water, the Skyforger and the Beginning of Times... the lyrics for these albums are more or less connected with the tales of Kalevala but the rest of my Amorphis texts are from my mind and pen. To concentrate on writing may get you into surprising mood."
      So this is not a Kalevalan tale or even connected to those. A great song still and maybe my favourite album from the group! I think I saw the band first live in ´98 and after that tens of times. Always a good live set as well!

Nowadays they mix a variety of styles into their concept and almost everything these guys touch turns into gold! The lyrics are largely about Nordic mythology. This is also the case with this one. Couple of their earlier songs with a different vocalist: "Black Winter Day" (1994) and "My Kantele (acoustic reprise)" (1997). The latter is a Finnish Folk song. When I first heard this song the story intrigued me. Like others have said its Finnish lore. The bee is revered and at one point it was believed that the bee could be used to send messages between the living and the dead. There is other references or stories of bees being considered to be stronger than a lion and as in this story when great people or "kings" came up with world changing ideas they were implanted in there heads by the gods via the bee that would bury in there skulls and give them inspiration.
    Bees were also revered because honey was the first form of sugar and with its discovery it was possible to make the first beers (ale,mead). Wild stuff thanks for jamming this one!

    Amorphis doesn't mean anything.. the guys were young (16-18 yo) and not so well versed in the English language. The first iteration of this band was called Abhorrance. Amorphis was just sounding and looking "cool" :D The correct form for the word would've been amorphous. :)
    Amorphis is one of the "foundation bands" of Melodic Death Metal in the early '90 along many Swedish OGs like In Flames, Edge of Sanity, Dark Tranquillity, etc
    But they've evolve and changed their sound A Ton. 1st album is more direct melodeath, but then Tales of Thousand Lakes and Elegy album brought a lot of that eastern folky vibes, (we call it kebab metal :) ) and their lyrics were taken from the Finnish National epic "Kalevala" from which J.R.R. Tolkien also took inspiration for the Lord of the Rings.
    This track is from Amorphis' new and latest era with the singer Tomi Joutsen, yes only one singer doing both styles.

As it's mentioned further down in the comments here a King died in battle and was decapitated, and his mother in grief brought the pieces of him to the banks of Tuonela where he was brought back to life. I love Alone. Went to a WWE event and got there super early. When they started the house music I guess it was in alphabetical order and that song came on. I heard the first piano strike and was like, did I hear that? Then the 2nd... no, it can't be... 3rd... holy shit it is! Amorphis being played on the PA of Wellss Fargo Arena before a WWE event! I was so excited to hear that because they don't get the playtime they deserve

    Amorphis sings exclusively about Finnish national epic Kalevala, so it's mythology most are not that familiar with with metaphors that deviate from Central European.
    Tomi Joutsen is the sole singer and extremely capable melodic death metal singer.
    Amorphis is one of the bedrocks of Finnish extreme metal starting as death metal in 1990s and slowly going more melodic and progressive.

    You guys really should look at another song of theirs called Godforsaken - has the wife of Nightwish maestro Tuomas singing, Johanna Kurkula. Absolutely amazing song.

    I'm not sure how to suggest a song to be reacted to- but there's an old school band named Hurt and a song of theirs called rapture. I would do a lyrical video if you review it. I think you'd like it. It's a bad @ss song. You guys rock!❤

    Finnish pioneers of death metal from early 90´s. About the same time came other band Sentenced that were harder Death metal as Amorphis has some folk & proge vibes.
    I liked those both at the time as they came.
    So i would recommend to check out Sentenced. This is song from the early era called Nepenthe. th-cam.com/video/j55oEnYKhVM/w-d-xo.html
