"The bee is a prominent character in the Kalevala and features in moments of birth and resurrection. Once the world has been created we are informed: ‘“from the clouds dripped honey.’ The women of the north are coveted, not just for their beauty, but also for their culinary skills with honey: ‘she may bake honey bread, know how to brew beer.’ Shortly afterwards, ‘smith Ilmarinen was born’ and a ‘bee rose up from the ground… O bee, lightweight man, bring mead on your wing, carry honey on your tongue, from six flowery tips, from seven grass tops, for steel things to be made, for iron to be wrought… spill honey on the earth.’ Apparently, the bee is essential to the forging of the world. Lemminkäinen’s mother resurrects her son using honey-based potions and spells, collected from the underworld with the assistance of a bee. Her concoction includes a drop of mead brought to anoint the weary one, to tend the ill-befallen… O bee, bird of ours, king of the forest flowers, go now to fetch some honey and to find some mead… to heal the ill.’ The resurrection ritual continues: So it (the bee) comes panting, travels doubled up, all its wings drenched in mead, its feathers in melted honey. She, Lemminkäinen’s mother, took the ointments and anointed the weary one, tended the ill-befallen; but no help came from them, no words came to the man. Lemminkäinen’s mother’s does not despair: Bee, my little bird, fly that other way, right over nine seas to an island on the main, a honey mainland, to Tuuri’s new cabin, the Worshipful boundless one. There is pleasant honey there and good ointment there, which will suit sinews and be good for limbs. The bee obeyed: The honey was being cooked… in tiny cauldrons, in beautiful pans that would hold a thumb, fit a fingertip. The bee, slight man, got some of those ointments. Next, we learn: The Creator sang charms and the pure God talked, the lord anointed his brood inured by an evil power. Dip your wings in mead, and your feathers in melted honey. The bee laments its chances of completing the task and is told: You will get there easily, trip there handsomely, over the moon, underneath the sun, between heaven’s stars. For one day you will flutter to the moon’s brow-bones, for another you will whizz to the Great Bear’s shoulder blades, for a third you will soar up to the Seven Stars’ back; then ‘tis a mite of a way a tiny circuit to where God the holy lives to the blessed one’s dwellings. And so the bee flies to the ‘Almighty’s chamber’ and returns with the ointment that allows Lemminkäinen’s mother to successfully complete her son’s resurrection."
@@Kai_kmk Pekka Kainulainen himself has said: "Hi, this text is not a Finnish folk tale. Who know's if there were this kind of a tale somewhere...but it just came to my mind during the writing session when making lyrics for the album. Inspiration or dreaming. The Silent Water, the Skyforger and the Beginning of Times... the lyrics for these albums are more or less connected with the tales of Kalevala but the rest of my Amorphis texts are from my mind and pen. To concentrate on writing may get you into surprising mood."
My point is that Finnish mythology is not just the Kalevala. Lyrics can be influenced by or be inspired by finnish mythology/pagan beliefs even if they're not straight from the Kalevala.
@@Kai_kmk sure, influenced is a probably a good word. The whole history of Kalevala is quite controversial, Lönnrot has probably been doing a lot of editing and not just collecting the tales. Kainulainen has built quite a mythology himself, a nice collection of characters and stories.
I think you'll enjoy their Death of a King, official music video, it has an oriental vibe to it and you see the whole band and it's anyway a cool video. Amongst Stars is super melodic, and with collab with a Dutch female vocalist Anneke van Ginsberg
How great to see this, Amorphis is one of my top 3 bands! Forging the Land of Thousand Lakes is a good live concert to check out, and you've already gotten a ton of great suggestions, so the only one I would add is The Moon from their most recent album. I'll be seeing these guys live in the autumn for the second time and I can't wait!
about the sound: recorded and mixed at finvox studios helsinki by mikko karmilla and mika jusilla. the same guys, who worked with nightwish, children of bodom, HIM, stratovarius, wintersun, Tiamat, apocalyptica, many more and ... lovebites. and tomi joutsen does both the harshs and the cleans. great reaction.
More Amorphis please! My favorite band with Nightwish ❤ Highly recommend to see them live if you ever got change! 👍🏻 By the way, it's hard to find good live recordings from them... I recommend those official videos.

Amorphis is one of the bedrocks of Finnish metal and had influenced countless of younger bands, which when it comes to harder Finnish metal means pretty much all of them. In 1990 there were not that many bands around in Finland doing more extreme forms of metal and Amorphis sound and guitar work has always been superb. The final piece landed in 2005 when Tomi Joutsen joined for vocals and for the first time they had a single singer who could do both cleans and growls to a very high standard and still retain the hallmark Amorhis sound on cleans. On live setting they are majestic; it's not a band, the Finnish bedrock itself is vibrating to bring you these emotions. They have a long an glorious backlog of released music, so it's hard to pick that to do next, but Among Stars features Anneke van Giersbergen (ex- the Gathering) and is a safe bet.
I would like to hear your thoughts of some of the older songs, like Silent Waters (personal favorite) and Silver Bride. Also Shades of grey is really good.
Hi from Finland 👋🏼 Yep Tomi Joutsen does them both ..one singer. Just saw them live! Amazing. You could make a reaction video for the moon or wrong direction from them
You're missing out if you omly listen to this album. Seriously, they've been on a good run this last decade or more. At the very least check out from the album "Circle" onwards.
During your intro when you read from Wikipedia I thought I was going to hate this but I have to admit I liked it a lot. Not what I expected at all. Will be checking out more from them for sure.

Tomi Joutsen has a magnificent voice. And yes, he does both, growls and cleans
