Against the backdrop of India-Canada tensions over Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the NIA has been cracking down on Sikh radicals & Punjab’s gangsters, who are also believed to be involved in drug smuggling. In Ep 1318 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta is joined by ThePrint Associate Editor Ananya Bhardwaj - who has kept a watch on Punjab gang activity as part of her reportage - for a discussion on this nexus, its main cast of characters, and how it operates.

Sir, this begs an important question.
If Sikhs are NOT in favor of Khalistan then how is it possible for Jagmeet NDP to win so many seats?
For Jagmeet NDP to win 25 seats he must have a very strong base of support meaning almost all the Sikh 700,000 voters go for Jagmeet.
      Please share your thoughts.

@@simona4315 Canada does not have a party list / proportional election system. The only people who vote for Jagmeet are in his constituency. Most NDP supporters are union members and socialist. Jugmeet is the only sikh MP in the party. Very few NDP supporters have ever heard of Khalistan or probably even the Punjab. He was elected to lead the NDP because he's a good speaker and it looks progressive to have a non-white person to lead the party. Sikhs have a say in about a dozen ridings ( there are 338 ridings in Canada. ) .

@@simona4315Jagmeet Singh's party is not a Sikh party. It's a very old party in Canada and Jagmeet only recently became it's head. It's a predominantly White party but with leftist ideology. Shekhar needs to calm down on the unnecessary context interruptions breaking the flow of Ananya. Good job on her for not losing it. Dear Shekharji, if you don't want to let her finish her thoughts then why bother inviting her to share the screen? You could have just done the show citing her for the research she did. I have great respect for you but this was very annoying and embarrassing. I have noticed it several times in recent past but this time could not resist myself typing this comment. FYI I have been following your journalism for a few decades and enjoy your storytelling -- and of course I am not a bot/troll. Thank you.
PS : Also your blank look at the camera while the other panelist is speaking and occasionally looking at you, is very strange. On the other hand, she was aware enough about her scrolling the phone to explain the reason at the end.

Dear Shekhar ji, this cut the clutter seems to be contradiction to your National Interest article "Sikhs have 99 problems and Khalistan isn't one of them". In your article you tried to put the blame of this fiasco on BJP government saying "The rise of this all-powerful BJP, lack of representation for the Sikhs - especially Punjab’s Sikhs - the isolation of the Akali Dal and what they see as victimisation of the Muslim minority have had a deep influence on the mood in Punjab. You can live in denial if that makes you comfortable, but not for long".
However, from the research of your journalist it appears, BJP may have created 99 problems, but Khalistan isn't one of them. On the contrary of what you said, BJP government actually reached out to the estranged Sikhs, in an effort to mend the relationship which in reality got worsened in the time-period of other governments.
I am a subscribed member of your entity coz I appreciates the laying-out of the facts by your colleagues, but your article went out of the line, as if you were in hurry to blame this government before anyone else does it. If someone has no idea of the historical aspects of this issue and reads your article, it paints an absolutely wrong picture of what actually has been happening. It's much in contrast to Indian government's efforts to try to contain this menace to keep the country safe. I would like you to explain your thoughts on this and if you agree, taking down that mis-leading article.

Shekhar Gupta has 2 main editorials. Cut the clutter that panders to right wing politics and National interest, that is for the left wing politics. My view is that the print is left of center but they need the money from the right wing supporters. Right wing is where the money is. So this is kind of a balancing act he is playing. There is nothing wrong with journalists to have politics. I just find it surprising that people are unable to read this.

The next nexus may arise from East/North East. Manzil wohi hai pyar ki, Rahi badal gaye.

There has to be bigger reasons that suddenly Khalistanis have become active in US, UK, Canada, Australia, Italy etc simultaneously after some 40 years of silence. If it was just money laundering and drugs it probably would have been much less synchronous.
More needs to be covered on how US is clearly playing a double game in all this and why it needs to stop it if it wants to improve relations with India.
I believe drugs and money laundering might not be their only sources of money, other sources also needs to be examined.
    What can they be?
It can't be Pakistan right now when it doesn't even have funds for its own survival, so there is clearly a bigger game here most probably being played by the West, and most importantly by its leader US.
To me it is clear that it is result of the agencies of the West to open up another front against India to use it as a stick when they want to. Up till now they used Kashmir but now probably they feel that Kashmir is loosing its steam gradually and so they need another stick.
Both the Government and the media needs to focus on this very important aspect.

Quite a common belief nowadays, if its not covered on prime-time tv, it doesn’t even qualify to be called news. Actually, the evil of k’stan never vanished rather it survived by keeping low key at home & nourishing abroad. What else when there’s a sitting MP of lower house fought & won elections by patronising idea of K’stan. So overall it witnessed a sharp decline thru early 2000s, though timely & repeated instances of killing of leaders of hindu orgs./members of rss etc. kept it running & sidelined to find a space in mainstream. Since 2010 a large fraction of dormant heads in cahoots with members of diaspora dragged it self out of dark & eventually found itself preying on farmers protests. Some chads & liberrs would cringe & label it bjp or modi’s anomalies to win elections, but humungous crowd from Panjab can’t be fizzled merely as coincidence.

A coalition govt which is weak and has a ready supply of MPs willing to sell themselves is ideal for US, as they can mould India the way they want. The Russian oil issue was quite an embaressment for the west, a weak coalition govt would have towed the line. Its the same reason why they supported a corrupt regime in pakistan

Very useful indeed. Might have helped if this was explained pictorially..could have saved lots of minutes
More importantly, I have a question. Has any reputed international publication looked at this side of the story about gangsters, separatists and their nexus? What credibility can we associate to these international names like NYT, WP, BBC etc if such basic research is not done by them? (Sorry if I have missed reading some of their articles)

I have a rule for me to not be a fan of politicians and journalists.
I Like Shekhar ji for his views most of the time, which are not popular at the time. Few examples, which I can remember now, are -
    1. Anna Protest
    2. Farmer's protest (although I was and still m personally in support of der demands)
    3. On Aadipurush Movie and whole language issue der.
And I love him for not calling these foreign Sikh radicals Khalistani.

    • @pp_01123
      @pp_01123 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Bingo!
In 2013, I used to think how can someone speak against Anna Movement. Later I realised that we all were fooled.
Although, I wanted Farm Laws with some assurance (like 25 year guarantee on not dismantling APMC) and with trust building (instead of passing without even votes)

    • @BharatThatIsIndia
      @BharatThatIsIndia 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@pp_01123 I agree on Anna Protest part with you.
On Farm Laws, I think the government motive was not pure and they were not acting for the benefit of farmers but for the big business houses, not even small businesses.
First of all they passed like that. They cld have passed with discussion also. They have the number.
then there were provisions of appeals which was really bad.
I still don't think APMC is good and private players will do a better job than APMC, if the government has some favourable rules farmers like they will pay the money if prices are less, etc.
But the NEEYAT Should be good, which was a big NO last time.
Secondly, If they are for open markets and all, then why are they stopping even BASMATI Rice to be exported. It is not bought by Goverment.
Which poor in India eat Basmati rice?
Why is the government increasing these taxes/limits?
So again it confirms that der thinking is not to benefit farmers but der middle class vote bank or some narrative.

This conversation is done very well and reflects the current crisis. What elements are missing is why has gangsterism arisen to begin with in these communities throughout a prior time period. There is a perpetuation yet again that this has no involvement of what india has done to contribute and foster these environments to then have people resort to radicalism. As a kid of indian diaspora within agree with the premise of increased radicalism in the country. This discounts the validity and merits many past indians who are now Canadians that have sentiment in regards to how the diaspora is premptively labeled as extremists. Even we are not happy with current punjabi migration to Canada. Once you lump all those holding serious concerns and radicals together which hindu media has always done whether in the 80s till now, it leads to backlash on both ends. I believe khalistan is not a good idea at all but throughout discourse on this matter with hindus ive been told im a khalistani. There is extremism outright on both sides. I as part of the diaspora am willing to have a conversation but will the hindu elites and news anchors begin taking accountability for their part in exacerbating tensions time and time again not just with sikhs but all minorities.

I like the content and it was very informative but one thing I noticed is that Mr. Gupta interrupts Ms. Ananya a bit too much which can be a bit irritating for the viewer. And also it indicates that he doesn't trust her in reporting the information correctly or he's worried that she will miss some important points. All of these can be solved by Mr. Gupta not interrupting and if she happens to miss out on some important points or reports incorrectly then, he can mention them after she's done. The content is very informative, Thanks.

Irony is the same system has until now took no notice and had no intention to control the same happening from inside Indian jails too.

Yes, till now Indian authorities were sleeping? They were OK to harbour these snakes 🐍 till it backfire.
The same story with mumbai gangster Dawood Ibrahim in the 80s and 90s when he was in MUMBAI these politicians and police were hand in hand with him. Then came the mumbai bomb blast, and he become a big devil to control. So the story is simple, as long these devils work for them then it's ok, when they work against them then they become anti national. So who is growing nourishing them initially!

While no one in Punjab have any problems with the Indian govt, khalistani radicals are raising a hue and cry over all kinds of imagined atrocities in India. these punjabi criminal gangs in Canada are helping local politicians retain power. the main issue is very simple, Canadian khalistani politicians are supporting this movement simply because that is what gives valid cause for more and more Sikhs to emigrate to Canada (increasing the size of this vote bank) using this idea of "political refugees", those against whom the Indian state is supposed to be committing "atrocities" and that serves all canadian politicians very well, it is as simple as that ??. they must learn from Pakistan's mistakes where the islamic terrorists they helped foster against India are now the snake which is coming back to bite them in their backside. the loser is the common canadian citizen who will see rising violence in their country as time goes by. it is the same pakistani ISI which is helping these khalistani criminal elements.

I strongly oppose the way this Shekhar Gupta always cuts off Ananya when she is speaking. Absolutely obnoxious. Gupta should practice his bossy behavior elsewhere and not in front of the audience as it is extremely irritating. The audience only needs to know the main story and Gupta should curb down his irresistible urge to explain every nitty gritty 'bells and whistles' detail especially when such details are extraneous in nature (Example: No one cares if Bambiha is a village or a bird).
Shekhar, you need to do a better job at presenting yourself.
