This is always a tough question. I like the mpc for its “ease of use” it I do not like the sound or the character of the mpc. I like the sp for its character, effects and of course portability. If you are not a problem solver, or you tend to not experiment. If you like stream line work flows, the sp as a beat making device is not for you. It’s still a great companion to any sampler for its sound processing and effects though. The mpc you can’t go wrong, it’s literally nothing wrong with the new Mpc’s (in my opinion) they just sound thin and bland, not much character. But to answer the question, if you don’t have neither right now. Get an mpc one (becasue you mentioned the form factor of the sp) and if you can get the sp later on.

This particular set only about 2 beats were made on the Sp, but I make beats on the sp just as much as I do on my mpc. Thing is a beast. Just so happen that this set had more mpc beats.
