I clean my old canteens by putting some C L R inside with water to remove old residue and then rinse well. I was a Scout in the mid sixties and never made it all the way but the spirit of scouting never left me.

That's the best Scouting can hope for, that the lessons never leave and the memories are fond. Have a great holiday season my friend!

I got my Eagle in 2005 I remember the transition from normal type canteens to Nalgene bottles to camelback type systems.

Me too! My first exposure to Nalgene's were at Northern Tier in 2002 or 2003, lol.

Some videos on canteen restoration shake them with BB’s inside and then pour boiling water with baking soda to clean them up. But eventually if you do the BB treatment regularly it will wear them out. You may find a gasket at a hardware store or on eBay.

thank you, I appreciate the suggestion. I tried and tried but I think the rust is just too caked. It makes a neat piece to the collection to show to others so at least it has that value :)

They have stuff that will get rid of rust. And even the lime deposits. Pretty sure it's safe and will wash out when it's done
I have one like that Barrel one and then I have another one but the spout is not on the very top it's kind of down a ways on the side. When I was a kid my dad got a cheapo aluminum canteen probably up the equivalent of the Walmart of the time which was tg&y or someplace like that maybe Howard's or Gibson's I'm pretty sure I had a canteen similar to this when were the spout is on the side that he picked up later at a garage sale but of course both of those canteens always made the water tastes funny even though the military style one was brand new. I liked carrying my plastic one I had got when I was a kid it was a toy, but the same size as the real ones and had a compass set in the middle period and it didn't make the water taste funny and since no one ever took my Scout Troop camping no one really knew about it anyway other than when you would go to den meetings and sit around in people's living rooms and usually we didn't carry all of our gear for that in fact a lot of times they didn't even want us to be carrying our pocket knives go figure

Thanks! I never considered using a chemical...I don't know why... My canteen was a Korean/Vietnam era aluminum surplus canteen. I always felt cool having it but back then playing military was common place, after all, GI Joe and the A Team was on TV, lol.

@@honorableoutfitters as well I remember. I had GI Joes but they were the big kind about a foot tall. Comparable to Barbies, I even had the GI Joe Jeep and little trailer with it, and some kind of multi wheel surveillance van maybe it was a lunar van that's what I always pretended it was. And of course all kinds of guns.
