I had a mess kit and a canteen like the 1943 that I got handed down to me when I joined the Boy Scouts, back in 1966. Brings back a lot of memories.

Very cool! My father received a handed down steel kit too in the 60s. He saw mine and it brought back memories and some stories. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

The lid gasket looks like a modern rubber hose gasket. A retro fit by a previous owner. My guess it originatively came with a cork gasket.
Great video, thanks for showing us.

You may be right. It does look more modern. I don't have any way of verifying that though. Maybe someone else with the same one will comment someday. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Great video!!! Love my old scout stuff. I have several mess kits, my steel one is by far my favorite. The carbon steel frying pan works like a champ

Wayne Autwell Thanks very much! The old scout gear is the best! I wish they still made gear as good as that steel mess kit. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

You seem to have found the last tinned steel BSA canteen. Super nice find. I cant find one anywhere. Very little information on it. If you can send me a message with info I'd appreciate it. Thanks John

I looked through your videos, but didn't see where you'd done one on the pre-war canteen. I'd like to know more about that one

Would it be possible to cleaning and re-tin the in and outside? Fill it to the top with CLR and leave it overnight. Then get a long wire pipe cleaner and put it in a drill to scrub the inside. Then re-tin it.

    Cool collection you have there,
do you know what is currently being used?

neil castell I took a look at their site and it looks like they use a variety of modern camp cooking gear and stoves like stuff from Summit, GSI, Jetboil. I bet a lot Scouts use Walmart gear too. Here’s their official gear site: www.scoutshop.org/camping?ShopbyScout_BoyScout&CampGear

I wish I would have kept my BS equipment. It was circa mid 1960's & as a note it was all alum. which everything stuck to it.

Too bad you don't still have it even if it was hard to cook with. I'm sure you already know but all of those round BSA kits (that I know of) were aluminum from 1915 all the way up to 1942 and then they were steel from then until around the end of 1945. Then they were aluminum again. The better aluminum ones with thicker gauge metal made by Wearever were before WW2 and for a little bit after. I think the Mirro kits after WW2 were OK too. During your time in the scouts, they seem to have been much more thinner gauge and harder to cook with but are still cool to collect. Was yours a Regal kit? Thanks for watching and for your comment!

John, I have no idea as to the manufacturer. I just know they were next to impossible to cook in without sticking or burning. Most of the burning was my fault. We used to clean them using sand and water.@@John-Sherwood-W4JFS
