I remember going from my hometown, CHICAGO to Alpine Valley concert hall to see Supertramp. We couldn't get any seats so we were up on the grass and it had rained and we all had soaked feet and wet asses but we didn't care 1bit cuz we were so mesmerized by the music. It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. It was 8/82. I framed most of my concert tickets and found great wall art in them and I went to ALOT OF CONCERTS. Life was fun and good and much simpler than life is now that I m 62 and just survived breast cancer surgery on top of having MS. I'm glad I did all that crazy shit when I was younger. Best Era to live in ever.
This is from an era when music was produced by real musicians. I discovered Supertramp in my late teens but this still has the ability to move me 40 years later. Sheer genius!
It was Juan, receptionist of the hotel we stayed in late 1978, Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, who had me listen to Supertramp the first time.. Crime of the Century is an amazing album, the magic I experienced the first time I heard this music, just never went away.. Thx Roger
It will never die when you and me listen every day, and pretend we are back in those times, nothing that musicians of today come close, but we know talent when we hear it, we come back to all these bands and groups, because we have memories that we hold onto, we only share them with the music of our time, we had our time, the youngsters today have their music, it is not intended for us, so we in turn enjoy what filled our days, and they have theirs, we are all lucky to enjoy all kinds of music.

I discovered Supertramp when I was 20. It didn't take long before they became my favorite group and music to listen to. Fools Overture still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it at the age of 66. I'm so glad I took my son and daughter to their concerts.

Very very brave to even consider a live performance of this epic song. But then when you have Rodger this seems the right thing to do. We are so lucky to have these kind of musicians that know what they are doing. I do try to listen to modern music i am 78, and crap is the best word i can come up with any music since 1990. Do they not listen to these great tracks of the 70's 80's and learn? OK I give up, thank God for these wonderful musicians of our generation because we do not forget them. They gave us such memories of our lives nothing can compare, thank you all.
I lived in Liverpool 62-65 and you know who came from there! The greatest band ever, but this song is better than "A Day In the Life"!!! This song is a Masterpiece, and I had the pleasure of seeing Supertramp 3 times. After 50 years of concerts this is in my top 10 shows, and gives me the shivers it is so good!!! PS edit: Zeppelin, Floyd and Elton are in my top 10 too! Pretty good company Roger!!!
Hi from New Zealand. I am originally from the Wirral and studied my engineering degree at the Poly on Byrom Street from 1974 - 1979. I was fortunate to see Supertramp midweek at the Empire in 1976. Then the BBC did a "Sight and Sound" broadcast on the following Saturday night from another venue. Fantastic experiences. We had the old sterio system set up either side of thev tv (maybe black and white then :-) ). Happy memories.
I was at this concert in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 2004. It was amazing! The performance took place as part of the Night of the Proms Tour. The Night of the Proms is a spectacular celebration of classical music and pop that takes place every year. In 2004 in Germany Roger Hodgson and pop artists Joe Cocker, Shaggy, and DJ Bobo performed their greatest hits with the accompaniment of a 70-piece symphonic orchestra, 50-person choir, and the John Miles Electric Band. I've been going to the NOTP for 21 years and I'm always amazed by the artists.

I've been fortunate to see Roger as an individual act every time he comes to my town. The music is as sharp, as sublime, as uplifting live as it was on record. I look around the venue and see nothing but joy from every other patron enjoying his music.
Roger IS the voice of Supertramp.. Saw him last month in the Midwest in the USA a few times. He plays ALL the hits and sings just as a great as he did in the 70's. He tours with a GREAT band if he does a show anywhere near you, you must go see him for a wonderful, beautiful and spiritual evening..
To my opinion on a good day his vocals are now better than when he was young. And the slight lowering of his voice did well for him. Fools Overture was well played by the band Supertramp, too. I'd say as good as a band could possibly play live. It was a bit different, but I did not miss the orchestra. This version certainly is grandiose.

Ik schat zo ongeveer van mijn 12e/13e had ik een buurjongen een paar huizen verder die een paar jaar ouder dan ik was, en compleet muziekgek. Hij was enig kind en dat betekende o.a. de weelde van een zakgeld dat het mijne inclusief het geld dat ik verdiende met een krantenwijk ver te boven ging, plus een extra kamer die volledig ingericht was als muziekkamer, met een muziekinstallatie die voor die tijd en zijn leeftijd imposant genoemd mocht worden. Ik deed het in die tijd met een helemaal niet slechte stereo met geïntegreerde cassette-recorder/radio waar op een gegeven moment een redelijke platenspeler bij kwam; daar was ik lang dik tevreden mee... Een en ander leidde ertoe dat ik met enige regelmaat op alle nieuwe ontdekkingen van buurjongen werd getrakteerd, en dat dan ook nog eens met in mijn ogen supersonische geluidskwaliteit. Het heeft zeker bijgedragen aan mijn ontwikkeling. Ook toen al - al was ik me daar nauwelijks van bewust - gold: 'Gedeelde Vreugd is Dubbele Vreugd' dus als ik weer eens iets moois/nieuws had gehoord, dan deelde ik die ervaringen natuurlijk. Achteraf gezien waarschijnlijk vaker en breder dan me bij bleef... Beetje bij beetje groeide ook mijn Platencollectie, en toen ik na een verhuizing zelf een flinke zolderkamer ter beschikking had waar èn muur ruimte was voor mijn eigen installatie, èn de volumeknop wat steviger opengezet kon worden omdat er een hele dempende slaapverdieping tussen die zolder en woonkamer zat - omstandigheden die echt veel meer toelieten dan het piepkleine, koude en gehorige kamertje waar mijn ontwikkeling als muziekliefhebber vlucht naam - zal ik ongetwijfeld ook weleens mensen meegetroond hebben om muziek te laten horen waar ik gek van was...ik kan me alleen niet heel veel van die soort momenten herinneren... Toch zijn ze er wel geweest, want het is toch wel enkele keren gebeurd dat - decennia later - iemand waar ik in die tienertijd veel mee optrok mij vertelde dat ik er de oorzaak van was dat hij/zij levenslang Fan van een Band was. Veelal Grotere Fan dan ikzelf; dus bijvoorbeeld door trouw haalbare Concerten bij te wonen, iets waar het bij mij dan niet of hooguit een keertje van gekomen was... Altijd leuk om te horen natuurlijk, maar soms uiterst verrassend... Supertramp is bijvoorbeeld zo'n Band; ik heb ze nooit Live zien spelen, toch waren ze een van de eerste bands waar ik elke nieuwe LP direct ging kopen. Dat kon in die tijd af en toe met korting; de oude buurjongen die me muzikaal op de rails had gezet werkte inmiddels voor een Platenzaak, die ik ook frequenteerde, en soms was er daar zelfs wel een karweitje te doen voor iemand als ik en dan kon de korting stevig oplopen. Supertramp is altijd een favoriet gebleven, toch hoor ik de muziek veel te weinig; deels omdat ik mijn muziekcollectie niet up-to-date hield - zo stonden platen en platenspeler lang op zolder, en had ik lang niet al die platen vervangen door de CD-versie - en in het CD-tijdperk had ik lange periodes dat ik die ook nog eens niet met een beetje kwaliteit kon afspelen. Tot overmaat van ramp is het overgrote deel van mijn CD's op raadselachtige wijze zoekgeraakt - al had ik die in mijn huidige woning ook niet zomaar goed uitgesteld kwijt gekund. En als je dan ook nog eens niet bepaald een Early Adapter bent als het gaat om bijvoorbeeld gestreamde muziek...dan moet je het dus van de radio hebben - en dat betekent in mijn geval: voornamelijk de autoradio... Dus ik hoorde de laatste 10-20 jaar relatief weinig Supertramp, en (Mini-)Rockopera's kunnen zich op de zender die ik beluister niet verheugen op veel gedraaid worden. Toeval bestaat volgens mij nauwelijks meer als het gaat om waar bijvoorbeeld Google en Facebook je op trakteren, maar toen eerder vandaag 'Fool's Overture' van Supertramp bovenaan kwam te staan bij TH-cam voelde het wel als 'toevallig'... En juist deze Mini-opera was een van de nummers van Supertramp die ik ooit op die zolderkamer regelmatig met de volumeknop op Max, en niet zelden ook meerdere keren achter elkaar afspeelde. Het was niet alleen aanleiding voor dit als 'Shartie' bedoelde, maar uiteindelijk toch tot Column-afmeting uitgegroeide stukje, het was ook aanleiding op de achtergrond een stukje van het Supertramp-oevre af te spelen en me daardoor maar weer eens te realiseren hoeveel mooie en bijzondere muziek deze band heeft geproduceerd... Kan een ieder zo'n (her-)ontdekkingstocht alleen maar aanraden..! En wie weet...wellicht komt er dan ook in de toekomst weer eens iemand waar ik het nooit van had verwacht naar me toe komt met een mededeling zoals hier boven - tegenwoordig overkomt het me zelfs wel dat mensen die ik niet of nauwelijks ken naar me toekomen met zo'n verhaal. En dat is erg leuk; je weet dan dat wat je schrijft gelezen wordt, en soms impact heeft...Dubbele Vreugd..!! AART DEKKER

I was introduced to Supertramp in the 80' by my brother in law who gave me a couple of his old albums and fell in love with their music but never heard of and thought I never heard fool's overture until very recently when I was in a nostalgic mood and I came across it and 1 section which I remembered clearly but could not quite place it other than a news show I watched. Imagine my surprise when I looked it up and found out it was Canada's W5's theme back in the day.
Whenever I am feeling a bit blue I simply turn my frown right side up by listening to this Masterpiece. The mix of the orchestra instruments, piano, flute, creates a melancholy blend that is simply 'divine'.
49 people lost their ears. This song with a full orchestra behind Roger is just heaven on a stick. Masterpiece!! Oh and love the drummer, he is fantastic.
Aside from buying the LP BIA when I was 16, 42 years later and I finally immersed myself in all that is Supertramp. better late than never! My fools overture, hopefully I can see him one of the post Covid days.

I always wanted to know what the theme music from w5 was. I recently bought a tape deck with an assortment of tapes and by chance one of them was Supertramp "even in the quietest moments". One day I played the tape and had my mind blown when I realized my age old question had just been answered. AWESOME

Very very brave to even consider a live performance of this epic song. But then when you have Rodger this seems the right thing to do. We are so lucky to have these kind of musicians that know what they are doing. I do try to listen to modern music i am 78, and crap is the best word i can come up with any music since 1990. Do they not listen to these great tracks of the 70's 80's and learn? OK I give up, thank God for these wonderful musicians of our generation because we do not forget them. They gave us such memories of our lives nothing can compare, thank you all.

I lived in Liverpool 62-65 and you know who came from there! The greatest band ever, but this song is better than "A Day In the Life"!!! This song is a Masterpiece, and I had the pleasure of seeing Supertramp 3 times. After 50 years of concerts this is in my top 10 shows, and gives me the shivers it is so good!!! PS edit: Zeppelin, Floyd and Elton are in my top 10 too! Pretty good company Roger!!!
Hi from New Zealand. I am originally from the Wirral and studied my engineering degree at the Poly on Byrom Street from 1974 - 1979. I was fortunate to see Supertramp midweek at the Empire in 1976. Then the BBC did a "Sight and Sound" broadcast on the following Saturday night from another venue. Fantastic experiences. We had the old sterio system set up either side of thev tv (maybe black and white then :-) ). Happy memories.

I was at this concert in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 2004. It was amazing! The performance took place as part of the Night of the Proms Tour. The Night of the Proms is a spectacular celebration of classical music and pop that takes place every year. In 2004 in Germany Roger Hodgson and pop artists Joe Cocker, Shaggy, and DJ Bobo performed their greatest hits with the accompaniment of a 70-piece symphonic orchestra, 50-person choir, and the John Miles Electric Band. I've been going to the NOTP for 21 years and I'm always amazed by the artists.

I've been fortunate to see Roger as an individual act every time he comes to my town. The music is as sharp, as sublime, as uplifting live as it was on record. I look around the venue and see nothing but joy from every other patron enjoying his music.
Roger IS the voice of Supertramp.. Saw him last month in the Midwest in the USA a few times. He plays ALL the hits and sings just as a great as he did in the 70's. He tours with a GREAT band if he does a show anywhere near you, you must go see him for a wonderful, beautiful and spiritual evening..
To my opinion on a good day his vocals are now better than when he was young. And the slight lowering of his voice did well for him.
Fools Overture was well played by the band Supertramp, too. I'd say as good as a band could possibly play live. It was a bit different, but I did not miss the orchestra. This version certainly is grandiose.

Ik schat zo ongeveer van mijn 12e/13e had ik een buurjongen een paar huizen verder die een paar jaar ouder dan ik was, en compleet muziekgek. Hij was enig kind en dat betekende o.a. de weelde van een zakgeld dat het mijne inclusief het geld dat ik verdiende met een krantenwijk ver te boven ging, plus een extra kamer die volledig ingericht was als muziekkamer, met een muziekinstallatie die voor die tijd en zijn leeftijd imposant genoemd mocht worden. Ik deed het in die tijd met een helemaal niet slechte stereo met geïntegreerde cassette-recorder/radio waar op een gegeven moment een redelijke platenspeler bij kwam; daar was ik lang dik tevreden mee...
Een en ander leidde ertoe dat ik met enige regelmaat op alle nieuwe ontdekkingen van buurjongen werd getrakteerd, en dat dan ook nog eens met in mijn ogen supersonische geluidskwaliteit. Het heeft zeker bijgedragen aan mijn ontwikkeling.
Ook toen al - al was ik me daar nauwelijks van bewust - gold: 'Gedeelde Vreugd is Dubbele Vreugd' dus als ik weer eens iets moois/nieuws had gehoord, dan deelde ik die ervaringen natuurlijk. Achteraf gezien waarschijnlijk vaker en breder dan me bij bleef... Beetje bij beetje groeide ook mijn Platencollectie, en toen ik na een verhuizing zelf een flinke zolderkamer ter beschikking had waar èn muur ruimte was voor mijn eigen installatie, èn de volumeknop wat steviger opengezet kon worden omdat er een hele dempende slaapverdieping tussen die zolder en woonkamer zat - omstandigheden die echt veel meer toelieten dan het piepkleine, koude en gehorige kamertje waar mijn ontwikkeling als muziekliefhebber vlucht naam - zal ik ongetwijfeld ook weleens mensen meegetroond hebben om muziek te laten horen waar ik gek van was...ik kan me alleen niet heel veel van die soort momenten herinneren...
Toch zijn ze er wel geweest, want het is toch wel enkele keren gebeurd dat - decennia later - iemand waar ik in die tienertijd veel mee optrok mij vertelde dat ik er de oorzaak van was dat hij/zij levenslang Fan van een Band was. Veelal Grotere Fan dan ikzelf; dus bijvoorbeeld door trouw haalbare Concerten bij te wonen, iets waar het bij mij dan niet of hooguit een keertje van gekomen was... Altijd leuk om te horen natuurlijk, maar soms uiterst verrassend...
Supertramp is bijvoorbeeld zo'n Band; ik heb ze nooit Live zien spelen, toch waren ze een van de eerste bands waar ik elke nieuwe LP direct ging kopen. Dat kon in die tijd af en toe met korting; de oude buurjongen die me muzikaal op de rails had gezet werkte inmiddels voor een Platenzaak, die ik ook frequenteerde, en soms was er daar zelfs wel een karweitje te doen voor iemand als ik en dan kon de korting stevig oplopen.
Supertramp is altijd een favoriet gebleven, toch hoor ik de muziek veel te weinig; deels omdat ik mijn muziekcollectie niet up-to-date hield - zo stonden platen en platenspeler lang op zolder, en had ik lang niet al die platen vervangen door de CD-versie - en in het CD-tijdperk had ik lange periodes dat ik die ook nog eens niet met een beetje kwaliteit kon afspelen. Tot overmaat van ramp is het overgrote deel van mijn CD's op raadselachtige wijze zoekgeraakt - al had ik die in mijn huidige woning ook niet zomaar goed uitgesteld kwijt gekund. En als je dan ook nog eens niet bepaald een Early Adapter bent als het gaat om bijvoorbeeld gestreamde muziek...dan moet je het dus van de radio hebben - en dat betekent in mijn geval: voornamelijk de autoradio...
Dus ik hoorde de laatste 10-20 jaar relatief weinig Supertramp, en (Mini-)Rockopera's kunnen zich op de zender die ik beluister niet verheugen op veel gedraaid worden.
Toeval bestaat volgens mij nauwelijks meer als het gaat om waar bijvoorbeeld Google en Facebook je op trakteren, maar toen eerder vandaag 'Fool's Overture' van Supertramp bovenaan kwam te staan bij TH-cam voelde het wel als 'toevallig'...
En juist deze Mini-opera was een van de nummers van Supertramp die ik ooit op die zolderkamer regelmatig met de volumeknop op Max, en niet zelden ook meerdere keren achter elkaar afspeelde. Het was niet alleen aanleiding voor dit als 'Shartie' bedoelde, maar uiteindelijk toch tot Column-afmeting uitgegroeide stukje, het was ook aanleiding op de achtergrond een stukje van het Supertramp-oevre af te spelen en me daardoor maar weer eens te realiseren hoeveel mooie en bijzondere muziek deze band heeft geproduceerd...
Kan een ieder zo'n (her-)ontdekkingstocht alleen maar aanraden..!
En wie weet...wellicht komt er dan ook in de toekomst weer eens iemand waar ik het nooit van had verwacht naar me toe komt met een mededeling zoals hier boven - tegenwoordig overkomt het me zelfs wel dat mensen die ik niet of nauwelijks ken naar me toekomen met zo'n verhaal. En dat is erg leuk; je weet dan dat wat je schrijft gelezen wordt, en soms impact heeft...Dubbele Vreugd..!!

One of my first concerts, Three Rivers stadium 1979.
I was introduced to Supertramp in the 80' by my brother in law who gave me a couple of his old albums and fell in love with their music but never heard of and thought I never heard fool's overture until very recently when I was in a nostalgic mood and I came across it and 1 section which I remembered clearly but could not quite place it other than a news show I watched. Imagine my surprise when I looked it up and found out it was Canada's W5's theme back in the day.
Whenever I am feeling a bit blue I simply turn my frown right side up by listening to this Masterpiece. The mix of the orchestra instruments, piano, flute, creates a melancholy blend that is simply 'divine'.
