'Superman Returns' was intended to be a love letter to the Richard Donner Superman franchise and a tribute to Christopher Reeve and his wife Dana who had both passed away. Unfortunately, the film ended up being an underwhelming soft reboot of 'Superman The Movie'.

You have to admire his dedication to the craft. Reeves put on an impressive physique at a time when leading men were not known to have 6 packs. He's perfect in every way. His acting made the ridiculous suit and iffy 70s practical effects look good.

Animated series was my first Superman. Now that I'm an adult I can understand that Reeve's is the best because he embodies the character closely and Reeves had charm. Also Superman 2 is the best Superman movie.
My favourite Superman will always be Christopher Reeve, whenever I read a Superman comic and think of it in movie form my mind goes to Reeve, he captured the essence of the character perfectly. Second place is Tom Welling, his development as Clark Kent was part of the journey and what a journey. Third place goes to Bud Coyler, the voice of Superman on radio and the old animated Superman shorts, of all of them he captured the perfect difference in personalities between Superman and Clark Kent with his voice that I feel Superman actors and voice actors lack. Fourth goes to George Reeves, he was the Superman of his era and there's something charming about his performance, shame how his life ended. Fifth place is a tie between Tom Daly and George Newburn for the DCAU Superman and other animated interpretations, like Vee said they both captured the serious but sincere side of the character. One version of the character I feel deserves more love is Gerard Christopher from the live action Superboy series from the late 80s, he captured that Reeve like aura but made still made it his own, he was so good that he almost upgraded to Superman when he auditioned for Lois and Clark and was accepted at first but was turned down only because they wanted a new face for the character, which is why they went with Dean Cain, who was good.

The scene where Brandon Routh Superman was hurt, and flew above the clouds into the sunlight the regain his strength was such a great scene. I digress. Brandon was definitely underrated. He was one of the best.
Three of the top superman moments for me are in superman returns Superman getting hit by that bazooka and not phased walking towards it like a badass then taking a bullet in the eye and just smirking after was my favorite superman scene

The Lester cut is the theatrical cut which has Superman and the Zod Trio doing some type of hologram trick in the Fortress of Solitude The Donner cut is the better version of Superman 2. It is a little bit more serious than the theatrical cut. It is the cut where Lois finds out Clark is Superman by shooting a blank gun at him. Superman defeats The Zod trio in the Fortress and then sends them back to the Phantom Zone by turning back time like he did in the first Superman movie. Supposedly there is another ending where Superman turns over the depowered Zod Trio to the Arctic authorities but I never saw that ending.

Christopher Reeve is the gold standard for Clark Kent/Superman & should be higher. I'm glad Brandon Routh got to redeem himself in COIE as Superman. Superman Returns was a great storyline but poorly executed onto the big screen. Tom Welling wasn't Superman, he played Clark Kent.
In one of the old Superman cartoons, he did know Lex, when he was young. In the cartoon Lex loses his hair because of the radiation from Kryptonite. That is why he is bald and he blames Superman for his baldness since the rocks came from his planet. That is why Clancy Brown Lex gets cancer from Kryptonite in DCAU. It is a reference to the baldness cause in the comics.
Love me some Superman. Though I adore Christopher Reeve as Supes, my fave is George Reeves. He wasn't the "all powerful" god-like hero we know, to me he was the epitome of a man who is super. I see both epitomizing the Dean Cain Superman's ideal that "Clark Kent is who I am, Superman is what I do". That being said, Superman is more than just a name, more than just a costume, more than just a power set. Superman is a quality of personality and characteristics of emotion. Just saying that with all the iterations of the Man of Tomorrow, I love them all, as long as they breathe the personality and characteristic life into the character. If one can't be the character than there is nothing different than my putting on my Superman costume, and a kid, standing with my arms akimbo, and proclaiming I am Superman.
Obviously it's a no brainier! Christopher Reeves and let me tell you why! It's not how he performs as Superman, its how well he performs as Clark Kent! He really pulls it off!
Henry was never "broody and angry". I honestly think ppl have no skill or practice at reading ppl. At times he was down sad or depressed but to think that can't be heroic or equate that with anger says more about the commenters lack of understanding BEYOND superman than that portrayal of superman. And his feelings are understandable and normal, he doesn't know why he's different, he has to be extra precarious, he's searching for identity, he's literally an alien in the world. But he's easily the most selfless live action superman, he's not helping for fame or kicks, he's not looking at reporters panties and being mischievous dropping them from the sky reminiscent of Brightburn. He's helping cuz he can and thinks he should. He shows the most restraint and maturity, considering his steps like his parents taught him, thinking twice and saving lives especially when it comes to humans. He's a serious superman in a recognizably hateful fearful phobic world. And among other things like fear he DID inspire hope, causing mankind in large to reconsider their beliefs, their relationships with God and their place in the cosmos and looked to clark as a godlike savior. In real life there would be a mixed bag of reception to someone like him. Just like there is of everyone else on a match smaller scale.
Vee, you hit the nail on the head about Brandon Routh. The biggest issue with Superman Returns was that they wanted it to be a continuation of Superman II. Which would've been fine had they not casted so young. Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth were both incredibly young in the film, in fact too young to reasonably believe that five years had past since the world had been introduced to an ADULT Superman. Bosworth and Routh would have been better suited with a retelling of the Superman origin rather than a continuation of something already established.

I like Cavill best not because of what he’s done, but what he is also capable of doing. You can tell when given the right lines and scenes, HE IS SUPERMAN. Chris Reeve second and Daly/Newburn 3rd. BUT! On any given day depending on my mood of nostalgia or what not, they are interchangeable.
First of all I am a Batman guy but I always liked Superman a lot but I haven't read a lot of comics and havent seen anything other than the Movies and the Justice League shows but I always saw Superman and Clark Kent as the same person they have the exact same ideals almost the same personality the only difference is the confidence. I always saw Superman as just Clark without his timidnes. But as I said my knowledge of the character is pretty limited and I might be qrong due to that so anybody is welcome to correct me and also what are your recomendations for Superman stories? I am currently watching Superman TAS and recently saw All Star Superma
DCAU but if we just stick to live action I think Dean Cain is by far the best as a modern Superman. The Reeves version is just too old school Superman for my tastes. Cain had some real character and warmth to him yet still humble. That show is really under rated due to the lackluster actual superhero action but the writing of the characters was spot on (in the first two seasons anyway). Also giving us the best live action Lex Luthor.
One thing people miss when Reeves' Superman is that he was nerdy and quirky as Superman with puns, so his Clark wasn't the "mask" he just toned it down Which is comic accurate

Christopher Reeve is #1 and it’s not even close. I’m nauseous hearing anyone say different. The 1st two Christopher Reeve Superman movies are the the greatest-super-hero-movies-EVER even with the awful special effects…and I’m a Marvel guy.

The Lester cut is the theatrical cut which has Superman and the Zod Trio doing some type of hologram trick in the Fortress of Solitude The Donner cut is the better version of Superman 2. It is a little bit more serious than the theatrical cut. It is the cut where Lois finds out Clark is Superman by shooting a blank gun at him. Superman defeats The Zod trio in the Fortress and then sends them back to the Phantom Zone by turning back time like he did in the first Superman movie. Supposedly there is another ending where Superman turns over the depowered Zod Trio to the Arctic authorities but I never saw that ending.

The Best Superman is and always will be Christopher Reeve. Christopher is to Superman what Sean Connery is to James Bond. Christopher is the standard of the character. The really goofy Reeve Superman movies are Superman 3 and 4. Superman 1 and 2 have the right balance of serious and comedy. The best comic book movies are the ones with the right balance and serious and comedy.

As for the lore and morality of superman well wasn't it based on 1950s society?
Being an immigrant, adopted by honest farmers from Kansas. Basic things like respect the family, the parents, blah blah blah be nice to neighbors, and help out others when possible? Than move to the big city get a job and assimilate into society i.e. get married and restart that cycle?
But at the same time the Cape and superman is the true self while Clark Kent the lovable goof with glasses and business suit is the disguise.

Reeves was fantastic as Superman, the only thing he really lacked was muscle, but that face and hair really had the "superhero look" that's so iconic. Tom Welling was great, but he was Clark, he was only Superman for the ending scene of the final episode. But yeah, Welling was the best Clark and Reeves was the best Superman

I just love how awkward and geeky his portrayal of Clark Kent is. No one would suspect Reeves Kent was Superman. And as Superman, he's so cool and honest.

In one of the old Superman cartoons, he did know Lex, when he was young. In the cartoon Lex loses his hair because of the radiation from Kryptonite. That is why he is bald and he blames Superman for his baldness since the rocks came from his planet. That is why Clancy Brown Lex gets cancer from Kryptonite in DCAU. It is a reference to the baldness cause in the comics.

Love me some Superman. Though I adore Christopher Reeve as Supes, my fave is George Reeves. He wasn't the "all powerful" god-like hero we know, to me he was the epitome of a man who is super. I see both epitomizing the Dean Cain Superman's ideal that "Clark Kent is who I am, Superman is what I do". That being said, Superman is more than just a name, more than just a costume, more than just a power set. Superman is a quality of personality and characteristics of emotion. Just saying that with all the iterations of the Man of Tomorrow, I love them all, as long as they breathe the personality and characteristic life into the character. If one can't be the character than there is nothing different than my putting on my Superman costume, and a kid, standing with my arms akimbo, and proclaiming I am Superman.
Obviously it's a no brainier! Christopher Reeves and let me tell you why! It's not how he performs as Superman, its how well he performs as Clark Kent! He really pulls it off!

Henry was never "broody and angry". I honestly think ppl have no skill or practice at reading ppl. At times he was down sad or depressed but to think that can't be heroic or equate that with anger says more about the commenters lack of understanding BEYOND superman than that portrayal of superman. And his feelings are understandable and normal, he doesn't know why he's different, he has to be extra precarious, he's searching for identity, he's literally an alien in the world. But he's easily the most selfless live action superman, he's not helping for fame or kicks, he's not looking at reporters panties and being mischievous dropping them from the sky reminiscent of Brightburn. He's helping cuz he can and thinks he should. He shows the most restraint and maturity, considering his steps like his parents taught him, thinking twice and saving lives especially when it comes to humans. He's a serious superman in a recognizably hateful fearful phobic world.
And among other things like fear he DID inspire hope, causing mankind in large to reconsider their beliefs, their relationships with God and their place in the cosmos and looked to clark as a godlike savior.
In real life there would be a mixed bag of reception to someone like him. Just like there is of everyone else on a match smaller scale.

Vee, you hit the nail on the head about Brandon Routh. The biggest issue with Superman Returns was that they wanted it to be a continuation of Superman II. Which would've been fine had they not casted so young. Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth were both incredibly young in the film, in fact too young to reasonably believe that five years had past since the world had been introduced to an ADULT Superman. Bosworth and Routh would have been better suited with a retelling of the Superman origin rather than a continuation of something already established.

I like Cavill best not because of what he’s done, but what he is also capable of doing. You can tell when given the right lines and scenes, HE IS SUPERMAN. Chris Reeve second and Daly/Newburn 3rd. BUT! On any given day depending on my mood of nostalgia or what not, they are interchangeable.
First of all I am a Batman guy but I always liked Superman a lot but I haven't read a lot of comics and havent seen anything other than the Movies and the Justice League shows but I always saw Superman and Clark Kent as the same person they have the exact same ideals almost the same personality the only difference is the confidence. I always saw Superman as just Clark without his timidnes. But as I said my knowledge of the character is pretty limited and I might be qrong due to that so anybody is welcome to correct me and also what are your recomendations for Superman stories? I am currently watching Superman TAS and recently saw All Star Superma
DCAU but if we just stick to live action I think Dean Cain is by far the best as a modern Superman. The Reeves version is just too old school Superman for my tastes. Cain had some real character and warmth to him yet still humble. That show is really under rated due to the lackluster actual superhero action but the writing of the characters was spot on (in the first two seasons anyway). Also giving us the best live action Lex Luthor.
