Absalon Fili Mi, most likely composed by Pierre La Rue in 1506.
Pierre La Rue (d.1518) spent decades of his professional life writing for the chapel of the Habsburg-Burgundian court. The singers here is said to have been phenomenal. The bass descends to Bb1 at the end, impressingly handled by Glenn Miller.
This is the first time in history this piece has been recorded at its written pitch.
GET THE ALBUM. It is absolutely marvellous.

Glenn's voice is #1 in the world to my ears. Clarity and power on pitch.
    It's so damn unfair.

I've listened to several low basses over the years--Profondo, Octavists, etc...etc...While I'm quite sure that I'm merely a novice on the topic, I find it very difficult to find someone living today who is more gifted than Glenn Miller in terms of sheer resonance and consistency. EVERY TIME I hear him sing...recorded or live performance...my jaw can't help but drop. It's unreal.

But among the dead, he has rivals (see post). More amazing to me, is that Josquin wrote for contrabass five centuries ago. What does that tell us? th-cam.com/video/xDNoTyMyGbM/w-d-xo.html

This proves how good of a singer Glenn Miller is, a different genre doesn’t phase him. He is able to sing with a renaissance tone perfectly!

I wish there were more of Glenn's singing on TH-cam! (Other than the Basso Profundo Song)! One of the greatest I've heard!

In order to fully appreciate this song you have to know the background of its text.
It is one of the most tragic stories from the Old Testament (2 Sam 13-19). King David of Israel had a lot of children. Two of them were Salomon and Absalom. Salomon should once become the successor of David. Absalom was quite rebellious and formed an army against his father in order to become king over Israel. The whole situation escalated so that father and son went into a kind of civil war with each other. David commanded his troups to catch his son but to spare his life. After a wilde battle, David won. While Absalom was forced to retreat and rode back on his mule, he got stuck with his head between the limbs of a tree and hung their helplessly until Joab, the commander of King David's army, killed him. All Israel was happy that the civil war was over and public order was restored but as soon as King David learned that his son died in the battle, he burst into tears. No matter how bad their relationship has been in recent years, no matter how much misery Absalom brought to the Israelites, it was still his son. David was full of sorrow and spoke those words that Pierre de la Rue (or maybe Josquin des Prez) set to music. This explains why there are only male voices. This is a father mourning for his dead son.
Pierre de la Rue (1452-1518) or Josquin des Prez (1455-1521): Absalon, fili mi
Probably written for the funeral of Philip I of Castile (1478-1506), son of Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519).
    Absalon fili mi,
quis det ut moriar pro te, Absalon?
    Non vivam ultra,
    sed descendam in infernum plorans.
    Absalon my son,
who grants me to die instead of you, Absalon?
    I shall live no more,
but go down to hell, weeping.
    2 Samuel @ (cf. Job @; cf. Psalm 54:16)

have come back to this after some years. I heard this early on in my choral-bass obsession and i remember how frickin mindblown i was at the final 45 or so seconds of this video. that final cadence, absolutel subwoofer Bb, perfect blend, just literally mind blowing

I love this piece to death, but my obsessive anticipation of the final section makes me literally angry every time i listen to the deceptive cadence around the 2:40 mark lol

i have listened to the end 6 separate times now and the goosebumps hit me hard every single time without fail. the most satisfying thing to my ears since i discovered all the barbershop guys doing the Cry tag in C lol

He has a great voice, and more to the point he handles it very well. His flawless technique is his greatest asset. I tend to prefer him on record, because he seems almost inhuman in his perfection. The power and sophistication of a titan. Live he seems more prone to slight errors, which deters from that quality of grandeur, but at the same time it makes him human and that's a quality in itself. However you look at it, he is simply great.

Jordi Savall recorded this also in this pitch with 4 singers. The low bass sung by Daniele Carnovich

Oh! Do you have a link or some way to get a recording?

      @Monrealese 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can't seem to find a working link other that 30 second samples, but it's on The Borgia Dynasty recording from 2010 if I'm correct. It's on Spotify and iTunes.
      Hope this helps! :)
