That link to the firmware update no longer works. Help!!! How can I update the hori Octa ps5 firmware ?
Been using this controller for over a year. With SF6, MK1 & Tekken &, it’s been holding up very well for me
Hi, I'm a only analog user, would this controller be viable for me or should I just spend the extra and get the DualSense?
If you want to use just analog, you can with that controller. I've done it with the latest Street Fighter. As for what you should buy, that's a choice you have to make.@@ryanl17_
You actually can remap the buttons or change the overall sensitivity of the d-pad without using a PC. There is a button on the face of the controller for this purpose. This is discussed in the physical manual that comes in the box but not in the online information as far as I could see.
Ah yes this is true. I didn’t mention it because the video was getting too long but yes, the assign button handles these functions but sadly doesn’t allow profile swapping without a pc
@@NihongoGamer Man , I'm not playing in this year , however my main difficult using control is one thing which is kind hard to perform in dpad : the small jump in SNK fighting games as Last Blade and or KOF , what do you think , this kind of dpad is better to small jumps in SNK fighting games as Last Blade and or KOF ?
Then i must be stupid because the instructions might as well be written in Chinese, i'd like to see an online video showing one how to setup, i have COD modern warfare II ready to go on steam but the thing's on but unresponsive
@@geemonster9179you bought a controller designed for fighting games to use it for CoD?
I actually have this Pad. I'm still learning to use it because it's so light. It's definitely way more responsive
Does it work on ps5??
@@فرجمناورالرشيدي-ذ3د yea
I hope Hori could make a new fightpad like this one, but without the stick, a slightly bigger and slightly less stiff d-pad. Man that would be great.
yea i had to return mine, the d pad is super stiff and stick is not needed.
Like the Street Fighter 4 fightpad. That is still the best fightpad I've ever used.
@@AllDayErrDay.That controller looks goated fr
I agree, like it needs the first commander d-pad in this new commander and it's perfect. Having the L3 and R3 as options on the left side in addition to R1 and R2 is perfect for fighting games. Makes tekken REALLY interesting to play on it with all the combinations you can add to it.
They had a perfect d-pad for their PS3 - PS4 fight pad Not sure why they had to screw it up for the new gen one.
Honestly as soon as I heard the buttons were clicky I was sold. I had the fight pad for the ps4/3 awhile ago and I still love it.

Thank you so much of mentioning this. It took me so much time and reading throght reddit threads to know about that way of handling a D-pad. This could have saved my thumb in Strive a long ago haha.
My thumb is sore right now from tekken 8 a year later and is still relavant
I had a ohhhhh moment when I clicked on your time stamp I almost picked a different video since I watched one similar
THX! Yes, pads have been killing my left thumb painfully. That's why I'm using heavy pro Hori Arcade Fighting Sticks. This Hori pad is still fun though!
I love how sensitive the buttons are. It’s helped a lot with SF6 drive rush execution. Before buying the Octa, I was using an old Xbox 360 controller.
been binge watching all your videos lately and I have to say the outro music in this is is top tier. As a pad player and owner of multiple pad controllers hearing your input on these make me happy knowing it is not just me having certain issues with these controllers.
Sega Genasis: laughing in doing this many years ago.
I’m pretty sure veteran D pad fighting game players have built up a nice callus on their thumbs
a pad designed specifically for fighting games and doesn't have a clicky dpad. wow.
Microswitches tend to be kinda fragile in d pads.
Cuz it's designed to play with the stick...
I don’t like clicky dpads, it hurts my thumb when I try to do Half-circles or Z-motions
@@MrHanzo507No, it’s not. The stick is meant for platformers. I have the controller and using it for a game like streetfighters is no different than using a normal stick.
@@JayFox128 it is! I have the Octa fightpad too and I play with the stick (even with my normal ps4 controller) and it works great, if it isn't working for you is cuz you're not a stick player, you're more a d-pad player, so you need a different controller like the Victrix Pro that has a better d-pad. These are fightpads, nothing is meant for platformers here. Theres is the regular dualshock 4/dualsense controller for that. At the end it's a prefference thing man. I have this controller and I have no complaints about it.
Love using this thing for 360 grapplers and goldlewis, can't wait to see how zangief feels in SF6 to get the most out of this PAD
I bought this controller last minute at EVO last year because I ended up forgetting my controller at my hotel room when my match came up for Tekken 7. I love the buttons and the clickiness of them as my PS4 controller can have constant missed inputs, the only problem I had is that it’s not too great for Korean Backdashing and had a lot of FHCF missed inputs as well (crucial for a King main) maybe I just suck at using this controller though 😂 My buddy likes it for playing GG Strive though, and It does feel nice playing claw-hand on it as well. Added bonus is that it’s wired so no having to desync after your match
Just got mine and I love it. I honestly have no problem w the d pad, but the octo is the reason I bought it. I wouldn’t say it replaces an arcade stick, it’s truly an apples and oranges comparison, but it damn sure replaces my DualShock when playing fighters.
I got this controller a couple months back and it has been reliable and no issues so far.
The DPad is less of an issue than I thought it would be. I’ll admit I rarely use the analogue stick, but I’m glad it’s there at all. Long story short, the software was a game changer when it comes to optimising certain games.
NG I love the depth of your reviews! In this vid you talked a bit about the disadvantage of pad vs stick. I've always struggled to find a controller which doesn't make me feel restricted somehow. Using stick I find dashing one direction is more awkward than the other, for example. Do you have a video that talks more in depth about different controller setups and translating human mechanics efficiently? Ultimately I'm willing to invest in a top tier controller to give SF6 solid romp but not sure where to land.
I’ve mentioned it here and there especially during live streams but I don’t have a specific video on it yet. Might do one in the future!
@@NihongoGamer Thanks NG!
What an awesome video. Im a guile main in SF6 and love the dpad if you use it properly (how you suggest in the video). Lots of options with this controller on how you want to hold it (over hand vs traditional, dpad vs analog). So far no real issues with it (have about 200 hours in SF6). Controller still going strong.
200 hours????
I actualçly moding this controller to have keybord mechanical mouse switches in the place of the membrane in the DPAD and it's actually FANTASTIC! Its very very sensitive, precise, FAST and effortless to do the inputs... The funny thing is that its the SAME king of switches the Hori Octa use for the buttons. I don't understand WHY they didn't do it or why they don't go for it from factory 🤷♂
I got the figting commander controller and it's amazing. Been a gamechanger for me.
I used to compete with a USB Sega Saturn controller before switching to stick and keyboard, so I'm interested in this controller!
the you from back then sounds like an absolute chad
You should review the VICTRIX PRO BFG WIRELESS Controller. It a very high end and expensive Fighting Game Pad Controller, and want to know if it's worth the price. Love the content btw, keep it up!
Sometimes I use both the Dpad and Analog stick especially when playing a sharp game of footsies
One reason that some people switch to stick over pad is because of how often and easy it is to accidentally jump/jump forward/jump backward when attempting a quarter circle/half circle. Jumping when you don't intend to in a fighting game can be a dire mistake that will almost always be punished when facing a skilled player. I have an Xbox controller I used on PC that I modified to add ticks at the left and right, so I could feel that I was going too far during a half circle.
If you use a dpad you'll have full control and not accidentally jump. I don't know how anyone can play any 2d fighting games with a pad analog stick
thats because your using an analog stick instead of the dpad. dont know why u would use an analog stick over dpad
Heavenly Potemkin BUSTA
This kind of d-pad is suposed to be used with that rocking motion, like you would do with a stick. Some old Sega Genesis pads actually had a threaded hole in the middle so you could screw a small arcade stick into it. I'd say stick to the dpad (no pun intended xd) on 2d games and use the analog octa stick for the 3d ones.
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the Victrix Pro BFG when that comes out next month
That pad will be really useful for sf6 with all the mechanics
Watching you describe the problems with controllers is like watching infomercials when the person doesn't know how to use a ladder
😂😂 you know that Mister Crimson plus with th stick of his pad😂😂
I have a love-hate relationship with the d-pad. Its kinda small and lightweight, so I dont feel that im hitting the input(s), but at the same time, I've never been able to buffer commands this quickly. I can do standing 720s with this thing.
One thing I'm trying today is to play with plastic wrap on my left thumb to see if that helps with the hard plastic.
he get th feeling of pushing the buttons harder than what it needed lol
Thank you for this super in depth review, I've been looking around to buy a pad and can't be buying every single one so seeing a very through review like yours is always apreciated
Thanks! Since I lightly covered the Xbox version I thought this was a good opportunity to go deeper into the octa :)
I bought it two years ago or so when it came out and I returned it. It was disappointing because the previous version of the Hori Fighting Commander (the 2016) was perfect in terms of design and how the D-pad felt. It took the popular Mad Catz SFIV fight pad design (basically a sega genesis controller) and slimmed it down a bit and added two extra shoulder buttons, which was great since the Mad Catz stopped making theirs and you couldn't find them. The new version, the OCTA, changed this design completely, the d-pad feels completely different as well as the buttons. It's very similar to Razer and Victrix "Fight controllers", which just feels like an aftermarket controller with microswitches and not one that is designed specifically for fighting games.
What do you use rn if I may ask?
I hate the octa, fighting commander 4 is the best imo.
Madcatz just needs to bring back those amazing gamepads they had around when SF4 came out. It was basically a Sega Genesis controller with cool designs.
Can we get a comparison between the Commander Octa and the previous Commander that we all know and love?
If the D pad was the size of the old SF4 Mad Catz D pad, I'd be in heaven.
The gamecube main analog stick does have an octo gate. It's one of the reasons smash players love that pad so much.
It’s been so long since I used one that I forgot! Thanks!
funny enough the wii nunchuck has an octagonal gate and its quite strange because its a large stick usually just used for movement in 3d adventure games like zelda
If you Prefer controllers on and on budget this is a really good option if you dont have money for a victrix.
I really like the dpad of this controller personally. However I'm pretty disappointed with the stick. I used to play melee and was excited of the idea of a responsive octagonal gate joystick on a controller with 6 face buttons but I wouldn't get this if you're looking to primarily use the joystick
Coming from Smash Kazuya Terry and Ken would this stick be good or not rlly?
In SF6 you can now map L3/R3 (and possibly touchpad) to an attack button)
As far as CPT (Capcom pro tour) goes you can't have double buttons. You'd have to set it to something that isn't an action button but then you lose one action or physically disable the button.
----
Attacking Action
The maximum number of input systems that can be used as attacking actions is eleven(11). However, the same offensive action cannot be assigned to multiple input systems. For example, it is not allowed to have more than one light punch button. When using a controller with more than eleven(11) input systems for attacking actions, measures must be taken in advance to disable the use of unnecessary input systems as attacking actions. Note that the above does not apply to input systems that cannot be used as inputs for attacking actions in the "Controller Settings" in the game (DualSense PS button, mute button, etc.).
I use my L3 and R3 for OD moves in sf6 and for grabs in tekken 7 🙂
is this controller good?
Can I make the shoulder R1 and R2 my EX moves now???

The street fight 4 fighter madcatz pad on the PS3 was the best fightpad. I love this D pad and ordered this controller last night.
The gamecube had an octagonal gate for both sticks actually. I wish more controllers did this.
so did the wii. it definitely makes much more sense for some games. using a pro controller for smash bros feels wrong
button boxes are the most effective but least fun. Stick is just fun to play with even if it takes a bit more work and is abit more inconsistent.
I love this pad and have been using it for a while, MK1 however doesn't recognise L3 as remappleable buttons, Tekken 8 atleast does. Tekken 8 and SF6 work very well in my opinion.
That looks like a perfect controller for N64, Sega Saturn and Genesis.
The control stick is like the GameCube controller which is something I’ve been waiting for a modern controller to have
I’d buy this controller if that was the only standout feature
Got mine and love it 🤙
I'm that pyscho that bought this controller to not use the d-pad at all. I'm working on it just wished there was a way to recalibrate the analog stick/replace it when It starts drifting. Other than that love the controller
I just got one yesterday and it was perfectly fine right out of the box with zero adjustments made. We'll see how it holds up.
Did it hold up? Thinking of switching to this now that my discontinued 4 is going up in value
@@ParisLikeHilton so far so good.
Nothing will replace my Victrix Pro FS for beatem ups and fighting games or anything that plays like a game from the arcade.
I think the Sega Saturn USB pad works best if you're looking for something like this especially because the top and bottom rows of buttons have a distinctive feeling separating kicks and punches.
Thank you for putting out another video of this controller, but in the PS5 version. I hope Hori see this video and do take your suggestion into consideration of a Pro version of this controller. I do like the micro-switches buttons, but not so much of the other things on this controller as you mentioned in the video. D-pad is a bit too small for my liking. Make the d-pad a bit bigger, and whatever micro-switches in the buttons, put that in the d-pad. Put the micro-switches in the shoulder buttons as well. I don't use the joystick as much, but those who do would appreciates Hall-Effect sensors as that's the new wave on the market. I don't mind paying extra in exchange for a better overall controller that is durable and a joy to play with. Gamers are tired of going through controllers that feels cheap and don't last.
hmmmm yes all of this. The Fighting Commander Octa's every part is just a tiny bit short of perfect except the face buttons which are pretty much there.
Yeah if Hori just made the d-pad slightly bigger and slightly less stiff I would love this pad.
This might be a silly question but if you adjust the sensitivity of the d pad using the software on your own computer do the settings save if you use the controller on another device? For example if you use it on pc, set the settings and then bring it to a tournament which is on ps5?
Nice video as always. I use that pad with a thumb glove and it just works like a charm. Best dpad ever.
Thumb glove is a good idea for harder d-pads! Clever!
Wtf is a thumb glove?! I use the analogue stick as the dpad hurts my thumb after about 10 seconds but constantly struggle with things like dashing and double quatre circle motions with the analogue. I'm off to Google to see what this mysterious thumb glove is 😅
@@phase_1471 ahah I know I know, it might sound weird but we are living in a world with arcade stickless and other alternatives. Anyway I saw some videos about that trick and for me it’s a game changer. It also helps when it’s hit and your thumb stick to the buttons ;-) playing analog is rare for fighting games as it’s not as accurate as the dpad but some pros use it ( ex: Akaraien). For the thumb glove you can buy some for mobile phone FPS on Amazon or just like me glove for hairdryer and cut off the thumb ;-) whatever make your life better is good. I have been looking for an entire year to be confortable with the right device. My conclusion is Hori Octa + thumb glove 👍. Xbox series x pad is good too.
we always used our t-shirt on the thumb on street fighter snes back in the days with my brother, then recently I found that some face mask can do the job better, but never heard of thumbs glove or just cutting a regular glove in fact is going to be better, thanks.
@@sombatone hehe true for the t-shirt. Honestly it changes a lot my gameplay and avoid a lot of frustration. And no pain anymore. Only problem is when my wife sees me with that thumb glove, she looks desperate ;-)
My issue if the life expectancy of the D Pad.
I have no problem getting used to it, if it will actually last longer then 6-8 months lol.
I REALLY want to say thank you to the comments! They said the important point this video doesn't really seem to have a prolonged section in it (though I admittedly skimmed) is that the D-pad which is THE MAIN REASON YOU GET A FIGHT PAD is garbo.
I recently tried this controller, and although I really do love the clicky buttons, the d-pad just doesn't do it for me and I ended up returning it. The d-pad started digging into my thumb after about 30-45 mins of using it, its just not comfortable for long term use. I ended up getting a PS5 Brooks converter and a 8bitdo m30 2.4ghz controller to hold me up until the Retrobit Sega Saturn Pro controller comes out. I just found out about the Betop controller that's supposed to be really good, but you need the converter to use it.
Thank you for the thumb guide 😅❤
I have this for streetfighter 6, just last week for series x, its much better then i thought it would be.
Great review on this controller especially about the ergonomics of it! I wonder if companies watch reviews like yours and make adjustments to their next versions because they certainly should. I take it you get sent a number of items to review and am curious if you've found any following sequential products with improvements you've touched upon?
Have you considered making physical adjustments to controllers like the ones you've mentioned and doing videos on them or is that a legal issue and not allowed? Keep the great work!!!
Do you have plans to review the victrix pro BGF Pro pad that releases next month? I saw it as an Amazon listing pre-order and it looks really interesting because it's the first ever Pro Controller that I've seen that is specifically designed for fighting an FPS games together like a cross fusion between the Hori Octa fighting pad and a Xbox elite series 2 with a color black and purple Color theme with switchable button layout I've been hesitating to pull the trigger of pre-ordering it because I always wait on your reviews you're my go-to channel for this type of stuff.
I’ve contacted them but remains to be seen whether a review unit arrives
i like that the controller is very light.
only thing i wish for is wireless capability.
I love the Yope/Nope! section if the vid!
Have the xbox version. Love it. It's my main controller for fighting games and 2D platformers. Dpad feels great, though it might be a bit stiff. That never really bothered me all that much, but I know others dislike it. I think the octa stick is best used for charge characters, though that could just be me. I haven't really messed around with it all that much.
This controller aside, have you heard of the Victrix Pro BGF controller that should be coming out next month? It's a modular controller that have a separate 6 button layout specifically for fighting games. I know you've tried the last Victrix controller and I'm wondering how did you feel about the dpad, particularly the diamond layout attachment? Out of all the reviews I've seen, you're the only one who talked about the dpad and to great length. I'd like to see if that controller can not only be a great pro controller, but also an amazing fightpad as well.
"though it might be a bit stiff." You want this bc it will loosen as it ages.
I’m hoping to cover the new Victrix. Hopefully they send me one!
I miss the eight-way directional buttons that were on the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn controllers back in the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn days. Four-way directional buttons are not all that great for fighting games.
Thinking about it, that would be the perfect modern controller for N64 emulation!
I have the Xbox version, and I honestly love it more than my arcade stick. The options to control the Dpad sensitivity and button mapping makes it more universal between games. I have a street fighter profile, tekken profile and a KOF profile. Its just a lot easier to use than the arcade stick
I have a arcade stick and I'm struggling so bad
@@lordhave4420 Same, my controllers broken so i'm stuck with an arcade stick, hard to get used to it.
Now I only used the PS4 Hori controller for platformers, but I found the D-pad on it to be absolutely horrible. Stiff, prone to malfunctions, and sharp to the point where it hurt. Any other design than that one should be a step up!
The issue for me is you cannot customize the shoulder buttons so you cannot have the L1-L2 on the left... in the PS4 SF5 controller you can do that...
Considering purchasing this for SFVI on PC, but I think I'm doing ok with my dualsense. May wait until a sale or get a fightstick eventually.
I have si much trouble doing anti air shoryukens with this d pad any tips?
What worries me about these is that it's apparently really easy to break
I kind of want to try this as I just struggle a bit with consistent execution on the dualsense d pad (altho i love the dualsense for non fighting games). But it’s just a lot of money for something I’m not sure if I’ll want to stick with. I wish there were more ps5-compatible options.
sony problem
I'm not huge on fighting games but I'm tempted to get this to play sega and sonic games on my playstation
Why is your arcade stick so far in the background I was confused for a couple of second when I looked at the thumbnail
Bro I think the octagonal gate is probably exactly what I need on a pad controller
I use analog sticks to play fighting-games because d-pads hurt my thumb. Gamecube's main stick did have an octagonal gate as well.
Heard any news about the Hori Octa pro? It was teased on a Japanese video.
I just dropped a rant on your Discord regarding my personal issues with "fight pad" design. For the past few years, I've ditched the arcade stick for the fight pad because 1) I don't really have the space to keep a stick, 2) I don't have the money to get a stick worth maintaining, and 3) sticks are too noisy for my household. I currently have a Razer Raion (apparently, a newer version where Razer added a fulcrum to the D-Pad to resolve the previous "bad 360 motion" issue), but like all other fighting-game-oriented controllers, I have an issue with its ergonomics because I've been one of those "hand-over grip" players since the SNES era. If I had the time, money, and resources, I'd design my own controller, but I guess I can hold my own with what I have, but can't reach my full potential.
buying this this for Tekken 8
Thank you man. Bought 2 of them.
The diagonal on the stick is my worst problem as well. in SF6 the game seems to fill in the gaps by itself. But games like kof the diagonals a lot of the times just don't happen. I wish there was a deadzone adjustment in the software so adjust for the diagonals because the amount of times I'm holding a diagonal to crouch block but my character just walks backward and I get hit by a low is ridiculous.
How does this compare to the Razer Raion? I love that one :)
as a pad user, this is the best fightpad i've ever used.
Really? I’ve been hearing a lot of issues with both the dpand and stick. Movement not registering / breakage / bad ergonomics / etc

Thanks for going more in depth on this one. You think you'll revisit the Razer Raion that was quietly updated with a pivot now? Wonder how that would now stack up against the Octa.
I’m curious about Raion. They consulted with me on improving it but then never contacted me again so i just haven’t got round to picking one up
@@NihongoGamer i have the Raion with the pivot but the skipping down input during half circle is still present when you do motion fast... (i have open my controller to see the pivot). My thought about this issue is that direction have "latency". When you press 41236 really fast, the switching still trigger previous input even if you think have release the position so at some point when you are at 2, the controller still see you have pressed 4 (because 1 = 4+2) so when you go to 3 the game see 4+2+6 and register that like a 3. The result is you skip 2 because it never know about 2 alone . The way to fix this is maybe SOCD implemantation in the firmware (4+6 = neutral) like stickless or switchs which are more faster to release the input.
skipping down is really a big problem for advanced motion like super in kof xv or guilty gear strive. The game is ok for normal half circle if you miss the down input. But when you need two half circle in a row, it's require the down input because otherwise no super and instead you only get the special attack :(
Thanks for mentioning the down input. I have both a modded v1 and new Raion (w pivot). On both, my execution seems fine for half circles, but I do seem to miss my down blocks and attacks alot more often. I'm coming from an 8bitdo m30, so I thought maybe it was bc the dpad is tighter. But maybe there's something off w/ the down input as you mentioned.
@@tobylee1170 i plan to mod the razer to figure out if it's can be fixed by SOCD. Not an easy task but if manage to achieve that i will tell you the result. it will take time though and it's risky (mod the pcb). But as you said the down input is really an issue. I still like the pad since i play dnf duel mainly but for kof and sf6...
Might pick this up since my FC4 is worn out and SF6 is right around the corner.
I'm personally use dpad like arcade stick style. Like good old good sega 6 button
The dpad is really bad unfortunatly, because the face buttons are great. Personnaly i recommand it only if you are a stick user because the stick is good.
I think the analog stick will be better for motion input if its elevation is lower and almost like dpad's height. I bought the octa thinking that I can finally use analog stick for fighting game, but it's still not good enough. Fortunately its dpad is a perfect small size for me.
Interesting. I’d like to try a low profile analog stick. Honestly what we really need is the neogeo pocket color stick
@@NihongoGamer yeah, I always think that flat analog stick, like the one from original PSP, with proper octogonal gate can be very good for fighting games. Never see one in action though, it's just my theory.
I was just thinking about this! I’m very new to fighting games so I figured there would already be one with a low profile analogue
I have both.
Save your money for the arcade stick unless your want faster execution by playing with a Dpad.
I use the controller only when I don't want to bring my stick.
Im too dumb for dpads.
Everytime i want to do DOWN FORWARD I need to try it 3 times because I hit DOWN only.
(Standard controllers always btw)
Some d-pads make it harder than others for sure. If you’re playing fighting games then s leverless controller or an arcade stick may be easier for hitting clean inputs
ive been waiting for this ¡¡¡¡
Hеllo, can I ask if there is a difference between the xbox and playstation version of the controller?
I will use the controller only and only for PC but I don't know what the differences are between them: quality? good reaction? Any other differences? Or they just differ in license.
I will be glad if you can answer me!
Can I remap R2 from the face button to one of the shoulder buttons? I want to get this for MK1 where you have to hit R2 at the same time as X or O for enhanced specials. And I use standard grip not that overhand grip
This has been tried so many times. Fight sticks will remain king.
Nice and honest review. I have the controller since one month now and i like/dislike it. Your video gave me some idea (placement of my thumb, use of face boutons, remapping). hnaks i will train that. Example i never thought of using triangle, circle R1, and R2 instead of the "legacy" square, cross. That game changing for me cause it feels like my rest postion is more around the circle than the cross ! i will train this the week. I'm thinking of remapping cross an square to direction (up and jump or maybe left and right) either to have acces to dash backdash or to help fuzzy guard. Thanks !
I had a GameCube controller specifically made like this with Nodules for the stick it’s way better then a fighting pad if your trying to switch into one but if your already adapt it’s not worth it
