    Imagine if there was a knock on the door and a bloke starts asking you who you are and whether you live there. It turns out that they are from Environment Agency stating that it is illegal to go fishing without a licence and there is no licence registered at the address. You reply that you don’t go fishing so you don’t need a licence. The uninvited caller then asks to come into your property to have a look around to see if there is any equipment capable of catching fish to “take you off the system.” This sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? So what the difference with the BBC?

      Even the confirmation of cancellation letter states that 'You may still get a visit from an enforcement officer'!
      You're not legally obliged to do anything about the TV Licence if you're legally licence-free, so just ignore/burn/shred the letters and don't even open your door to any unexpected visitors.

I gave reference numbers the lot. I also said l didn't appreciate the tone of their letter, implying l was a criminal when l had already stated l no longer needed a licence. Of course this was before l started watching all your helpful videos and l used to take their threats seriously. So back then l wasn't taking any of their shit, lol. Especially all the bad things l started hearing about the BBC. My approach must have worked as l got a very apologetic email, which was fair enough. I enjoy watching your videos after l cancelled though because they put my mind at ease and give great insight into this deplorable corporation.

      @Bob Mule Detector vans did exist, and did work... but... They were based on the fact that cathode ray tube analog tv's of the 50's and 60's gife off RF ghosting, the maximum range you could really pick this up at was about 30 feet, so the vans worked, more or less in the "everyone lives on coronation street" days, 60';s and 70's towerblocks killed that idea, flats more than 30 feet from the road...
      And the things dont work at all on digital flatscreens...
      The main use for the tech was for industrial espionage against pc monitors, which is why if you open the plastic casing on an old analog monitor, you will find there is a "Faraday Cage" inside...

    • @aestheticdemon3802
      @aestheticdemon3802 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bob Mule Hahaha, you kind of missed the point... back when the damn things worked at all, they basically only worked on Coronation Street, early 1900's terraced working class hovels in narrow streets, using one needed great skill and luck, and you were using it on people who, if they had a tv at all, tended to auto-obey laws passed by their "betters", while the people most likely to avoid the law were smug middle class suburban types with front gardens large enough that their tv was over 30 ft from the road anyway...
      And yes fear-mongering, just like the bs letters in too much red ink today, but expensive unreliable and temperamental fear-mongering.
      Also, the convictions didnt arise from the use of the vans, the van just told you a tv was tuned tv type device was displaying a picture that seemed to be a broadcast channel, the actual conviction would have been from the "knock on the door" that followed, and the fact that the pre-privatisation inspectors had "a statutory right of entry" so you couldn't legaly slam the door in their face, they would come in, see the tv, ask to see your licence and... Then you got the conviction based on THAT, never on the van its self.
      But tv tech improvmentsd and changing accomodation styles made the van obsolete and cost prohibitive so bye bye, and random inspections only.
      That in turn was dropped for "send the plebs threatening letters from a private contractor with no legal powers, with lots of red ink to scare them into paying even if they don't need to.
      I don't watch tv, and don't need a licence, and I've been ignoring their damn letters for more than 20 years with not one single visit, or any legal action. And no, I didnt tell them "dont need one" that just makes them arrange a visit to see if you are lying...

Your channel gave me all the info I needed to know back when I was considering cancelling, and also helped me deal with their mafia style correspondence. They are toothless dogs, all bark and no bite, and nobody at all should feel threatened or intimidated by their actions. So thank you, and more power to you. Keep doing what you do, you are genuinely making a difference to people's lives in a positive way. 😃👍🏻

I realised then that they were taking the piss however if I had had a letter asking nicely I may well have paid, to threaten someone with court in the first letter but not to name them is shameful behaviour and I’ll never buy another tv license.

    The last time I got a letter from them about 4 years ago now I invited them to my 'Address' giving a date and time I would be there to 'receive them'
    I actually live on a boat and have a postal address at a yard I rent a few miles away.
    They arrived, yes on time, two of them, took one look at the yard through the gates, turned to each other and said something.
    Next thing I know they are walking away, I ask them if all is OK and the answer I got was, cheers for the trip out you won't see us again.
    Not sure why, maybe a yard full of old trucks and buses, no mains electric but a Telephone poll and line was a bit too much for them, that or the many weird sculptures (made from old chainsaws and motorbikes and stuff) my son has made and are all around the place.
    oh and the old hair styling heads for a hair cutting collage on the top of the gates may have been a warning sign.
    Not had anything since.

  • @robertnewell5057
    @robertnewell5057 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Laugh? You are a great man, and I thank you for getting me to take the step of cancelling my licence. As always, your advice is perfect. Do nothing. This letter is nauseating piffle. I used to be a journal and book editor and I will just point out one thing. TV licensing are being very subtle here, because the verb 'should' does not actually imply a legal or moral duty (it just sounds like it does). It simply records a guideline or recommendation (in this case from TV licensing) 'whenever noncompliance with the specification is permissible'. It has a similar sense to 'ought to' or 'we would like you to' - as in 'you should/ought to/we would like you to wash your hands before dinner' or 'there should be/ought to be/we would like less repeats on television'. So it is basically an opinion or request. It means in lay terms: 'we would like you to, but you don't have to' - so don't - unless you want to! Finally, the bit about difficulty paying bills is certainly condescending, but also a con designed to make one think they are being helpful, since BBC have the power to ease any difficulty paying bills once and for all (by ceasing to charge a licence fee), and since most people's financial circumstances are unlikely to change in 10 days (unless they cancel their licence and stop watching live TV and BBC iplayer). I note TV licensing do not suggest this as a tactic to ease financial difficulties. To be even-handed (as BBC are required to be) they should have TV licensing include: 'If you have difficulties paying bills you can stop watching live TV and BBC iplayer, cancel your licence NOW and we will refund the remainder of this year's licence fee. Hmm.

    My argument
    A) if I lived in the UK, and
    B) if I received one of these letters
    would be:
    "You have said I have until the 17 February to pay my licence, but since you haven't stipulated a year then I have not breached this letter", and if they should knock on my door, or start an investigation then I would make them aware that they have breeched thier own letter as there isn't a year specified, and that they should cease and desist immediately or I would begin legal action against them

    Yet another cracking video mate. For us sending letters over can also help others that are slightly more fearful of the bbc and their “ clever language “.
    Also I’m pretty sure in thinking that if for some reason they manage to get a warrant and turn up with the police that the police are only there to make sure there is no breach of the peace and NOT to enforce the warrant. I know it’s slightly outside of what you do but if my facts are correct that could be a useful video for some people that possibly get stitched up by them.
