pass this inspirational performance on, we need this now more than ever!!
Welcome! These musical clips are from a large video collection that is now being converted from VHS/Beta to digital. There is some viewing quality loss from the original video source due to the age of the tapes, but the performances are preserved and still a joy to view. I'm finding many lost performances from vintage R&B, Soul, Pop, Broadway, Cabaret and other performances. This channel will be the Ed Sullivan channel for the digital generation, something for everyone to enjoy. Many of the performances will be seen for the first time since they were originally televised. I will be adding many musical performances from a variety of sources that I hope you will enjoy. Please hit the like button if you can.

Joan was blessed that her own career outlasted Carson’s and so her legacy was secured. She died with several generations of fans who, like me, will miss her for the rest of their lives.

I get what you're saying, but with all due respect: Carson retired.
Unlike Rivers, who worked until her death, or Letterman, who eventually returned with Netflix specials, Carson walked away from it all and never looked back.
It's not like I would know the answer, but he either wanted to enjoy a full retirement away from the race to stay relevant (without the Tonight Show), or he recognized as a performer that the Tonight Show provided him with a "call and response" that he was never likely to have in any subsequent endeavors.
Whatever his reasons, and I don't mean this as criticism, he never offered the public the chance to reject him or to embrace him once again.
So Joan's career didn't outlast Johnny's, so much as she continued working long after he decided he could never do anything to top 30 years on the Tonight Show.

Carson today is effectively forever forgotten.
Millennials and zoomer‘s have no idea who he is and when they do they find him and unfunny and uninteresting and quickly forget after being told who he is.

@@VBN59Z I loved Joan Rivers until she supported Steve Forbes and realized how repugnant her politics were; I was never really able to enjoy her comedy after that.
Still, your point that Carson is long forgotten is correct, as are many other pop culture icons of our youth. That's not a slam on his staying power, that's just the way things are.
My point was that Rivers career did not outlast Johnny's. Johnny Carson quit the business after 30 years on the top. Rivers never quit working until her dying day, with all of the ups and downs one experiences when they've worked all of their adult life.
I think she worked twice as hard as any man in the business and was driven by the fear that it could all be taken away from her, as it almost was following the death of her husband. In a fair, equitable world, she'd have earned as much as Carson and would have had the same retirement options.

Michael Simon I know what you mean. I didn't know her personally, but I loved her and miss her so damn much. I was born in 88, too young to know what was going in between her and Carson. I don't like seeing her hurt and in pain. The treatment Carson gave her after he stopped talking to was despicable. She clearly adored him and was forever grateful.
This got me teary eyed. I almost stopped watching it cause I didn't want to see her cry. The other time that almost made me cry as at the beginning of her documentary 'A Piece of Work.'
When she was discussing how difficult the previous year was for her, and that her biggest fear was to have an empty calendar. It made me tear up cause I hated that she was going through a rough time in her career and you can tell she was worried if her career would ever come back. But so glad her career finally came back and became bigger than ever. Love this woman.

The birth of a new decade is always accompanied with a new generation of youth and trends. Throughout her career she was able to remain successful by opening the door to anything or anyone considered too be Taboo. She was a leader to all of the women employed in what was considered to be a male profession, and a role Model to Every Little Girl Pushed Aside or Held Back from pursuing Her Dreams !!!!!!!!!!! Joan Rivers was really loved here in the UK, and when she had bad times in America, she knew all she had to do was fly over to Britain and she would be loved. We loved her wicked sense of humour. The talk shows here adored her, from the great Graham Norton, to the family friendly Des O'Connor to the satirical wit of Clive Anderson, she was a regular on our talk shows. Johnny Carson did us a favour when he rejected and cold shouldered her in 1986, we gained, and that cold fish Carson lost.

@@chonaV Carson's TV demeanor was not his true personality. He could be a real pri** and was the singular driving force behind shunning Joan as she described in the tearful video. HE was the reason she wasn't invited on the show in the final weeks and HE was the reason she wasn't permitted to use clips from Joan's performances from the Carson show. He was pissed because her show was up against his in the same time slot . She was a unique individual and her comedy material was all her own. Carson had comedy writers create his monologues. AMEN to that! Joan was a work horse, a creative genius, and an inspiration to so many... comparing a Hope Diamond to a pebble of sand in the cosmos of talent, warmth, and impact on the American pop-culture. Carson was ungrateful, entitled, and just plain cruel. But I guess we should thank him for that; who knows where your legacy would have ended up if it played out differently. His cultural and professional legacy died with him, while Joan's has lived on. Her intelligence, warmth, work-ethic, determination - and that joy and laughter- continue to impact generations, across the globe. You did it, Joan. You ARE the winner. Your parents are proud, your work touched our hearts, and your legacy will not ever be forgotten. Rest in Paradise.

That is not correct. Remember Dick Cavett was always opposite Johnny with a variety of talk shows, when every new show started and ended, Dick was always invited on to Johnny's show with no problem at all. Johnny used to joke with Dick that when a talk show of Dick's was cancelled he would joke "it will be forces radio next for Dick" - but he had no trouble with competition. It was down to the fact Joan never told him in advance. He barely got 2 days prior notice before the announcement.

I will miss this remarkable lady forever. I think the way Johnny Carson and NBC treated her was absolutely appalling, but Joan managed to rise above it. A lot of people may not associate Joan Rivers with the term "class act," but they are quite wrong. Underneath her loud, brash and acerbic exterior, Joan was a kind and sensitive woman. RIP, Queen.

The problem with what went down was Joan didn’t tell Carson or anyone about her talk show till literally the last minute.
She could have handled it better I think.
However I do think Carson and his people overreacted big time. The way they treated her and in essence tried to erase her from the history of the shoe was awful.
    Johnny really held a grudge.
I often think Carson was the bigger star between the two of them but at the same time he retired and never looked back. He rarely made public appearances etc.
However Joan kept working and was still as funny and sharp as ever and you could argue she had to work much harder then he did to get where she was.

In how I see it, this whole hosting thing isn't about fame for her, but survival. She mentioned in many interviews that it's very hard for her to get a job. What would you do if, after all the shortfalls, you finally found an opportunity? And as a friend, what would you do if your friend finally found an opportunity that could secure her future and the future of her child (even if it means competing with you)?

In January 1986 Joan was offered her own talk show to launch in October 1986 on the new Fox network. Fox told her not to mention this to Johnny Carson at all otherwise the deal would be cancelled. It was a $15 million a year Fox deal, NBC were paying her around $2 million for guest hosting Tonight Show. So she kept quiet, said nothing to Johnny. When she appeared on his show in April 1986 he had no idea. One month later the big press conference happened. Johnny was shocked. She never told him at all. Never asked for advice. Not a word. If someone gives you everything as Joan admits he did, you don't then turn around and try to crush him. You thank them copiously for everything they've done for YOU, and wish them well, staying close friends with them. If you're lucky, they might come back. I had the good fortune of many great sellers who returned, after realizing what they had with us, was better. I made a point of hiring people smarter than I, giving them every measure of support.
