That "little town" you're in--Lake Placid, NY--was host to the 1980 Winter Olympics--home of the "Miracle on Ice" where the US men's hockey team beat the then USSR. God, you make me feel old, but I love your channel. (I should have waited for it. LOL).
Thanks for being an Everyman . So many YT Van Lifers cruise around in their 100K custom Mercedes Sprinter vans and even use animals as props. You are a “regular” guy who has real world adventures we can all relate to. Thanks for that. Keep up the great work!
Totally agree! Jonathan is the real deal and the genuine article. It's like when he was talking about all the new fancy gadgets, what I took from that is that it's unnecessary. It's only if you want it, but you can clearly make do with basic things.
I was born and raised in the Adirondacks. I even went to college in Potsdam (Clarkson University). So I have really enjoyed seeing my old stomping ground again. What you smell is balsam. You can buy balsam pillows in any souvenir shop to keep the fragrance around you.
Born and raised in the Northern Adirondacks so it was great seeing some familiar spots as you drove along, especially along by the Hungry Trout Restaurant. Enjoy your travels in my old stomping grounds! Best views in the world!
@@knitwit014 we head to the LP/Wilmington area every fall for vacay and of course gotta have some Clare and Carl’s michigans. Unfortunately, didn’t make it this year as we are headed to the UK instead but that’s a nice trade off.
@@AdirondackNative51 I used to go every year to the Adult ice skating camp in LP. We used to stay at the Golden Arrow hotel. So much fun. I went to PSC and lived for a time in Saranac Lake. I haven't been back in 3 years, but now my sister bought a camp on Lake Titus, so I need to get up there. It's 10 hours drive from VA.
Also, the entire northeast has had poor foliage this year due to the tremendous amount of rain we had over the summer. Lots of our leaves are turning brown and dropping off instead of the usual really gorgeous leaves.
I appreciate what you said about gear and all the van life channels. You don’t need an $80,000 setup to travel and be comfortable! Do what works for you and piece it together as you go 😎
Hey Jonathan, doesn’t your battery automatically charge as you’re driving? That would make sense why your battery has hardly used any charge because you’re doing a lot of driving
@@MtnMeMawthe Superduty fords do have a 12v battery charge lead in the 7 pin trailer plug. Some don’t have the relay installed but that’s all that is required.
DC to DC charger. Pulling power from your truck alternator and sending it to the house battery in the camper. Might as well get some solar charging and you can ditch the "quiet" generator.
Your lithium battery is actually probably only at 25% state-of-charge when at 13V. If there are some loads it might be higher. While DC-DC charger are nice and required for a larger battery banks, for a 100ah battery a direct alternator-to-house-battery connection is just fine. You need to add an isolation relay to ensure that your chassis battery does not drain your house battery when the engine is off but that's it. Use 4 gauge wire and an ignition triggered 200 amp isolation relay as well as an 80 amp inline fuse and you are done. This will not harm either your alternator or your battery. Try to keep connections as short as possible. Your alternator will probably only charge your house battery to about 85% but that's fine for lithium batteries unlike SLA batteries.
Looked like fun! You stayed at one of my favorite roads to camp on near lake placid when I’m going up to hike. It’s always super busy though. I hope you’re going to check out some other cool spots. Let me know if you’d want to meet up or want any camping suggestions!
Just be aware that with a lithium battery you cannot rely on voltage to know the state of charge, as the battery will show very little change in voltage until it is almost discharge, then voltage will drop abruptly. Best way, is using a battery monitor like a Victron BMV-712
Another great video Jonathon, thanks for sharing. In June I did a reverse trip of what your doing now. I went from my home in Hudson Valley, NY, to Montanas Glacier Park. I was living out of my minimalist truck topper build (Im jealous of seeing you stand up making dinner, LOL) for 17days (6000miles) I think the best mod i did was to install a simple DC to DC charger setup. Never had to worry about the battery status. I was running a small waeco fridge, camper lights, and charging electronics at night. For a few hundred dollars and a couple hrs on work it was worth knowing i alway had a battery that was topped off. Thanks again for sharing and enjoy the rest of your trip
Lifelong upstate NYer here. We have tons of big lakes here, including two Great Lakes (Ontario and Erie) and all of the Fingerlakes. It’s a high bar to be a lake in our state. Glad you’re enjoying your time in the ADKs.
Having more than one charging source is great, solar, gas generator, 30 Amp outlet, mini power source. There is no need to get complicated, keep it simple.
Hellooooo Jonathan!! Charlene here to say “Hello & Thank You!!” I was born & raised in upstate New York & you seem to be just a few hours away from my home town of Clayville! I haven’t been home in more than a dozen years so this has been wonderful!! Yes, the views & the smells are almost indescribable! As a little girl I remember the combination of the Maple, Apple, & Pine tree scents which were abundant, at least in my area at the time. Oh, and the girl you passed on the trail, that’s the way it is. Not mean per se, but not friendly either lol. You want some Friendly?? Come on through Texas on your way home & we’ll serve ya up some good ol’ Texas Friendly lol!!! Thanks again, Friend. Safe travels!!😊
You can install a smart battery isolater that will charge your house battery when your truck is running and the starter battery is fully charged. You can have a switch between it and your l-ion battery that you manage yourself if you want to run the l-ion battery down to the recommended level before you charge it up again. Maybe you already have that installed, but if not, it's worth the effort and cost in my humble opinion. :)
You'll notice, as you go further South, towards the Hudson Valley, the leaves change and are still at peak. On Long Island, they are not yet at peak. New York is a very large state with different temperatures that are moderated by the ocean.
Another great installment, Jonathan! Thanks for sharing your trip with us. Hope you enjoyed the Lake Placid area (and yes, you pronounced it correctly). Loved the views from your hike at Mt. Lithium batteries should not be charged in the cold unless its a heated lithium battery. Also you should get a shunt as its hard to tell the state of charge of lithium with just voltage.
Great vid. As for your battery, get an energy monitor - I believe the battery you have is "depleted" around 11.8 to 12 volts. The actual numbers are in the manual that came w/ the battery.
Hopefully you switched out your original onboard charge converter to accommodate the Lithium upgrade. You need the increased charge voltage to properly charge those type batteries.
