It's the easiest way to break a right winger's brain when they go off about how sexuality is a choice and nobody is born gay. Then you assert that they themselves could choose to be gay with another guy and it's like "NOW HOLD ON A SECOND...."

I remember the first time hearing someone say it was a choice, and asked if it was a choice for them, genuinely curious; they sputtered something about everyone having "perverted urges" and I distinctly remember saying something like "I knew for sure I liked girls when you and your buddies were still scared of cooties for like another 3 years. Maybe those urges mean something." And they tried to hit me. Same kids also said I was gay because I didn't seem interested in girls at the school... But I was from an old family and this was a VERY small school district, the two towns had a population of less than 20,000 combined, my own being less than 7,000. I was related to a lot of people in both towns, enough to not even be sure of all of them. Maybe distant cousins were still on the table for them, idk. Definitely not interesting for me. 😂

My brother-in-law was married to a lesbian. She had hid it all her life. Her dad was a bishop in the LDS church. If she came out it would embarrasse him with the church. It literally drove her crazy. They did electric shock therapy, and other horrible things to try to help her. She wound up having an affair with a woman and abandoning her husband and 3 kids and 1 adopted. She stayed with the woman and she wasn't hiding it anymore. Her mental health problem went away.
Yes I was very similar when I was hiding that I am transgender now I am out happy and not having anxiety or suicidal tendencies and finally living my life

I knew I was gay when I was three years old. By the time I was five I understood the social implications. It was hard growing up, the beatings, name calling, etc. Today I am 67 years old. My greatest fear is the current political climate, the return to my childhood. I would rather die now than go through it again.
It is important to me to let people live now they choose without facing the wrath of the ignorant. It takes incredible courage to yourself in a closed-minded world
You’re correct in the heterosexual not having to decide their sexuality. Having said that though, a lot of them experiment later. Being gay, I didn’t decide to be gay but societal pressures forced me to decide to hide my sexual orientation. Those pressures are responsible for a lot of the mental health issues in the world right now.
Exactly! I'm trans. I knew something was "wrong" by the time I was four, but the reaction from my father made me hide in the closet until I was 51. When I finally came out publicly (9 years ago today!) a whole pile of health issues, both mental and physical, went away. The only choice we make is whether or not to live our true lives.

Then two other brothers had me at different times after that. Counsellors, years later, referred to it as abuse but no, it wasn’t. I don’t see it as abuse because I enjoyed it. I consented. I do know that people have been and are abused but that’s not my experience.

As the mother of a gay son, none of that ever came to my mind. It never crossed my mind as to what his sexual orientation was when he was a baby. That was not important to me anyway. I love him. He is a very good person.

I had a boss who told us she never knew she was gay until she came to san francisco and saw a gay pride parade with her family when she was young (I was working at an LGBT film festival at the time), and she realized that she COULD date people of the same sex. She never had feelings for men, but felt them for women, but never saw people express that in public I would ask Matt Walsh, if sexuality is a choice, then why not choose to be gay for a little while? Give it a shot. Maybe just consider it. Then again maybe he's struggling with that 😂

Exactly. It works similarly for many trans folks. Growing up, I always felt like a boy. I even convinced my entire class that I *was* a boy for several days at age 8 (until the teacher intervened). Being referred to and seen as a girl always felt wrong to me, like it just didn't fit. But I didn't know I was "trans" until well into adulthood, when I realized that 1. Being trans and performing drag aren't the same thing at all, and 2. Trans men exist. Prior to that, I'd only heard about trans women, and confused that even further with performing drag. Why on Earth would I, as a trans boy growing up, have ever thought to identify with the type of hyper-feminized performance put on by drag queens, when that represented everything that felt wrong about myself? When coming out to my mom as an adult and explaining the difference between how I felt growing up and how she'd felt as a "tomboy" when younger, one of the things I asked her was this: If there had been a magic button shown to you as a kid, and you were told that pressing that button would give you a boy's body and/or cause everyone around you to begin seeing you as a boy, in every way possible, and you knew you couldn't take back that decision, would you have hit that button? She said no way. I said yes, I would have hit it without hesitation. Heck, I cried myself to sleep at night praying for God to turn me into a boy while I slept. That button didn't exist for me as a kid. As an adult, while the button isn't as magical or instantaneous in its effects as I'd like, it does. I know enough about the science, etc to understand now that I always was a boy/man. People simply failed to see that due to societal issues and a general lack of understanding. Tl;dr: Just because a child may not have the words or frame of reference to express certain aspects about themselves to adults does not mean those aspects don't exist. You cannot talk about something if you don't know any of the relevant words. LGBTQ+ youth exist. The more we normalize that existence in society, the happier those kids will be as they grow into adults with a greater understanding and acceptance of those aspects of themselves.

Neither gender felt like home. I just didn't fit.

The line I've heard from mormons is that porn, even straight porn, awakens your desire for sex as pleasure. Then once that desire is there you are more likely to explore other things that feel good. They feel it's much easier to be happy with lights out vanilla sex if you spend your whole life pretending not to like it too much.

I knew the little boy next door that played with my daughter was clearly gay. It wasn't sexual at that age, but when the 3, 4, 5, year olds in the neighborhood played house, he insisted on being the mom. As an 8 - 9-year-old, he was always fussing with his hair, and other feminine traits. Today he is a happily and successful gay man, in a long time relationship with another man.
None of those traits you named are gay traits or meant that he was gay. Could mean or implicate several different things. For example, I'm a man and I was that way when I was kid. I'm as heterosexual as they come.

I do believe sexual orientation is not rigid, and it is more malleable than it tends to be portrayed. I went through changes. I was bisexual, and then I was heterosexual, and it may change again. Sex is sex, and people like what they like, or love who they love. And it can change.

You’re right, David. Stupid. I have 2 male friends, both gay and out. I knew something was different when they were 4. I had no name for how they they were “different”. I love them both; lovely adult men & so are their male partners.
I was at school with a family who had a gay uncle (a well-known tv actor at the time), their mother turned out to be gay. The two brothers were too, and the younger sister married, had kids, and all were happy in their own skins. We all knew that the older brothers were "different", but just accepted it, without delving into specifics.
Also I think it's worth noting that most serial predators target their victims based on certain characteristics. I don't know if there is any literature on this, but I suspect it may be that child sexual predators target children that show traits that may be associated with homosexuality. Meaning, the abuse didn't make the child gay, the child was targeted because they were gay. Just a hypothesis.
I knew a man in the early 1990s who was a researcher and the lab he worked in had found that gay men's brains are slightly smaller in the same area that women's brains are smaller. We are NOT talking about a great amount of brain tissue here, The difference in size does not affect intelligence in any way. At the time, it was all over the media, so this is not a secret. Matt Walsh evidently does very little research, maybe to keep in step with the rest of the rightwing nuts or maybe he never saw it because the book was banned? In either case, they are born that way, 10% all gay, 10% all straight, and the mass majority somewhere in between.

As a medical professional, I have met , and taken the medical history’s of transgender persons- and had I not been privy to that history I would have never known that they were trans - you are among more trans people than you might think , because they are normal , regular, people not really any different than non-trans - they just knew that you can’t live a lie - Support to my great friends in the LGBTQ+ community!

Great response. I believe most people just follow what their body tells them when they get there. The idea of a choice being there for gay individuals seems at odds with the fact that many will try to fit in before accepting themselves.
My brother was gay and what he explained made sense. First he shared why would choose to be gay because it did make his life harder resulting in dying if aids. But most importantly he said it was about loving someone else. He said everyone goes straight to associated it with sex when it really was about caring and loving someone and they just happen to be the sane sex.
Im a 50 yr old gay man. The only "trauma" related to my sexuality i experienced was being bullied in school from about 7th grade on. (I never came out to anyone during that time, but apparently a pink shirt and the way i carried my books was all it took) Of course, i was inundated with 100% heterosexual media in movies and tv. The AIDS crisis was in full swing. I guess Matt Walsh thinks all that might have made me decide it was a smarter "choice" to be straight (as im sure he believes seeing drag queens and gay couples in advertising and social media today is somehow convincing kids they should be gay) But no. That is not the way it works.

As a member of the "alphabet" community, I believe sexual orientation is formed from a variety of factors and is different for everyone. This would explain why there is such a wide variety of expressions even in just the gay category alone, for example. Nature, nurture, environmental factors, hormone disrupting chemicals from plastics, social and psychological factors, etc. Even if it _were_ 100% a choice, what difference does it make? People are allowed to choose who they love! This world needs *more* love, not less.
There are absolutely innate factors that affect sexual orientation, one of the most well-known and well-researched being the *fraternal birth order effect.* Male children who already have multiple older brothers when they are born are increasingly likely to be gay the more male kids came before them. It increases with each additional male pregnancy, with odds increasing by 38-48% each time. So overall something like 2% for the first son, 3% for the second, 5% for the third, etc. Wikipedia has a great page on it with lots of research papers referenced.
You reminded me of being eight or nine years old in the 1960s. Walking home with my sister, asking her about a playground insult. “What’s a poof, exactly?” “Hmm…it’s when you’re boyfriend and boyfriend instead of boyfriend and girlfriend.” I thought about teenagers we knew who were winching, and imagined two boys holding hands, having a snog. “Why is a it bad word, then?” She shrugged. “Well, how should *I* know?” And then, “I don’t see why, anyway.” I only had the haziest idea about sex. I felt like I wanted to be a girl since such an early age it seemed like an immutable part of who I am. I remember wanting to plead with my parents to just buy me girl clothes. I remember discovering the wonderful hope of surgery! I set out to achieve it as soon as I could, and I was successful with that and hormones. But what I found was that people don’t want to accept you as a woman. They want to highlight your difference as a trans woman. Rather than letting you just quietly live your life as who you wanted to be, very well-meaning people want to use you as a political tool. You can never stop talking about your past, the most delicate and sensitive decisions you have ever made, answering invasive questions. My experiences may not be everyone’s experiences, but there are a lot of well-meaning people on the left who can make it such a living heck for you that you get tired. So very tired. Trans women are treated very differently from women, and while some may really want to highlight your differences, some people just wanted to live regular lives. And that is hard to do. Maybe those urges mean something." And they tried to hit me. Same kids also said I was gay because I didn't seem interested in girls at the school... But I was from an old family and this was a VERY small school district, the two towns had a population of less than 20,000 combined, my own being less than 7,000. I was related to a lot of people in both towns, enough to not even be sure of all of them. Maybe distant cousins were still on the table for them, idk. Definitely not interesting for me. 😂

My brother-in-law was married to a lesbian. She had hid it all her life. Her dad was a bishop in the LDS church. If she came out it would embarrasse him with the church. It literally drove her crazy. They did electric shock therapy, and other horrible things to try to help her. She wound up having an affair with a woman and abandoning her husband and 3 kids and 1 adopted. She stayed with the woman and she wasn't hiding it anymore. Her mental health problem went away.

I’ve heard of people in the Catholic Church who were given exorcisms when it was discovered they were gay, I just can’t understand how people can do this sort of thing in this day and age.

I knew I was gay when I was three years old. By the time I was five I understood the social implications. It was hard growing up, the beatings, name calling, etc. Today I am 67 years old. My greatest fear is the current political climate, the return to my childhood. I would rather die now than go through it again.

Being gay, I didn’t decide to be gay but societal pressures forced me to decide to hide my sexual orientation. Those pressures are responsible for a lot of the mental health issues in the world right now.
Exactly! I'm trans. I knew something was "wrong" by the time I was four, but the reaction from my father made me hide in the closet until I was 51. When I finally came out publicly (9 years ago today!) a whole pile of health issues, both mental and physical, went away. The only choice we make is whether or not to live our true lives.

I had a boss who told us she never knew she was gay until she came to san francisco and saw a gay pride parade with her family when she was young (I was working at an LGBT film festival at the time), and she realized that she COULD date people of the same sex. She never had feelings for men, but felt them for women, but never saw people express that in public

I pledged a fraternity for 3 weeks in my 1 semester that I went away to college, and I got propositioned by a frat brother over Aol instant messenger, and when I shut it down (it was an anonymous proposition, but I know it had something to do with that frat) - from what I hear, this is not an outlier, happens all the time. I dropped out of pledging and also dropped out of that school after that semester, I transfered to UB(uffalo) as a junior and was one and done, not really because of that but that certainly didnt make me want to stick around.

Exactly. It works similarly for many trans folks. Growing up, I always felt like a boy. I even convinced my entire class that I *was* a boy for several days at age 8 (until the teacher intervened). Being referred to and seen as a girl always felt wrong to me, like it just didn't fit. But I didn't know I was "trans" until well into adulthood, when I realized that 1. Being trans and performing drag aren't the same thing at all, and 2. Trans men exist. Prior to that, I'd only heard about trans women, and confused that even further with performing drag. Why on Earth would I, as a trans boy growing up, have ever thought to identify with the type of hyper-feminized performance put on by drag queens, when that represented everything that felt wrong about myself?
When coming out to my mom as an adult and explaining the difference between how I felt growing up and how she'd felt as a "tomboy" when younger, one of the things I asked her was this: If there had been a magic button shown to you as a kid, and you were told that pressing that button would give you a boy's body and/or cause everyone around you to begin seeing you as a boy, in every way possible, and you knew you couldn't take back that decision, would you have hit that button? She said no way. I said yes, I would have hit it without hesitation. Heck, I cried myself to sleep at night praying for God to turn me into a boy while I slept. That button didn't exist for me as a kid. As an adult, while the button isn't as magical or instantaneous in its effects as I'd like, it does. I know enough about the science, etc to understand now that I always was a boy/man. People simply failed to see that due to societal issues and a general lack of understanding.
Tl;dr: Just because a child may not have the words or frame of reference to express certain aspects about themselves to adults does not mean those aspects don't exist. You cannot talk about something if you don't know any of the relevant words. LGBTQ+ youth exist. The more we normalize that existence in society, the happier those kids will be as they grow into adults with a greater understanding and acceptance of those aspects of themselves.

I knew the little boy next door that played with my daughter was clearly gay. It wasn't sexual at that age, but when the 3, 4, 5, year olds in the neighborhood played house, he insisted on being the mom. As an 8 - 9-year-old, he was always fussing with his hair, and other feminine traits. Today he is a happily and successful gay man, in a long time relationship with another man.
None of those traits you named are gay traits or meant that he was gay. Could mean or implicate several different things. For example, I'm a man and I was that way when I was kid. I'm as heterosexual as they come.

You’re right, David. Stupid. I have 2 male friends, both gay and out. I knew something was different when they were 4. I had no name for how they they were “different”. I love them both; lovely adult men & so are their male partners.
I was at school with a family who had a gay uncle (a well-known tv actor at the time), their mother turned out to be gay. The two brothers were too, and the younger sister married, had kids, and all were happy in their own skins. We all knew that the older brothers were "different", but just accepted it, without delving into specifics.
This is just matt's anger from realizing humans can be born gay but can not be born religious or racist.
Also I think it's worth noting that most serial predators target their victims based on certain characteristics. I don't know if there is any literature on this, but I suspect it may be that child sexual predators target children that show traits that may be associated with homosexuality. Meaning, the abuse didn't make the child gay, the child was targeted because they were gay. Just a hypothesis.
I knew a man in the early 1990s who was a researcher and the lab he worked in had found that gay men's brains are slightly smaller in the same area that women's brains are smaller. We are NOT talking about a great amount of brain tissue here, The difference in size does not affect intelligence in any way. At the time, it was all over the media, so this is not a secret. Matt Walsh evidently does very little research, maybe to keep in step with the rest of the rightwing nuts or maybe he never saw it because the book was banned? In either case, they are born that way, 10% all gay, 10% all straight, and the mass majority somewhere in between.
I didn't know it at the time, but looking back I know I was definitely hetero at 4. Whether I was "born" heterosexual I actually have no idea, but it would be the most logical conclusion

As a medical professional, I have met , and taken the medical history’s of transgender persons- and had I not been privy to that history I would have never known that they were trans - you are among more trans people than you might think , because they are normal , regular, people not really any different than non-trans - they just knew that you can’t live a lie -

You are right David, it is 2023 and we seem to be sliding backwards, in protecting human rights. You are an amazing ally for our community and so knowledgeable about issues that you discuss. Thank you for that. Men like him have no idea of the harm that he wreaks on his public platform. His words, may have caused unbelievable anguish to a fellow human, young or old, or violence or a suicide, to happen. I’m just grateful that the world is populated with a majority that chooses kindness and love. The global community is made up of the best and the worst of humanity, but the worst are far outnumbered by the best.

Great response. I believe most people just follow what their body tells them when they get there. The idea of a choice being there for gay individuals seems at odds with the fact that many will try to fit in before accepting themselves.

My brother was gay and what he explained made sense. First he shared why would choose to be gay because it did make his life harder resulting in dying if aids. But most importantly he said it was about loving someone else. He said everyone goes straight to associated it with sex when it really was about caring and loving someone and they just happen to be the sane sex.
Im a 50 yr old gay man. The only "trauma" related to my sexuality i experienced was being bullied in school from about 7th grade on.
(I never came out to anyone during that time, but apparently a pink shirt and the way i carried my books was all it took)
Of course, i was inundated with 100% heterosexual media in movies and tv.

As a member of the "alphabet" community, I believe sexual orientation is formed from a variety of factors and is different for everyone. This would explain why there is such a wide variety of expressions even in just the gay category alone, for example. Nature, nurture, environmental factors, hormone disrupting chemicals from plastics, social and psychological factors, etc. Even if it _were_ 100% a choice, what difference does it make? People are allowed to choose who they love! This world needs *more* love, not less.

There are absolutely innate factors that affect sexual orientation, one of the most well-known and well-researched being the *fraternal birth order effect.* Male children who already have multiple older brothers when they are born are increasingly likely to be gay the more male kids came before them. It increases with each additional male pregnancy, with odds increasing by 38-48% each time. So overall something like 2% for the first son, 3% for the second, 5% for the third, etc. Wikipedia has a great page on it with lots of research papers referenced.

It's very common to be married and a closet gay. My gay friends have known who they are/what they are, since the early ages of 5 and 6. My gay friends have made it clear they were attracted to the same sex since they were very young, just as I was attracted to the opposite sex since I was very young. And, some people are attracted to both sexes. So, Matt, what don't you understand?

I felt like I wanted to be a girl since such an early age it seemed like an immutable part of who I am. I remember wanting to plead with my parents to just buy me girl clothes. I remember discovering the wonderful hope of surgery! I set out to achieve it as soon as I could, and I was successful with that and hormones.
But what I found was that people don’t want to accept you as a woman. They want to highlight your difference as a trans woman. Rather than letting you just quietly live your life as who you wanted to be, very well-meaning people want to use you as a political tool. You can never stop talking about your past, the most delicate and sensitive decisions you have ever made, answering invasive questions. My experiences may not be everyone’s experiences, but there are a lot of well-meaning people on the left who can make it such a living heck for you that you get tired. So very tired. Trans women are treated very differently from women, and while some may really want to highlight your differences, some people just wanted to live regular lives. And that is hard to do.
