A perfect fit for my rainy day mood, Paul.
I particularly enjoyed the beautiful fit you created of the photos throughout the middle section - the juxtaposition of the hopeful start of a marriage with the maturity and realities of a lifetime... youth through old age.
Beautifully done. A marriage of your artist's eye with your artist's ear.
    Thank you!
    Jane

This is an absolutely amazing piece to play and learn! I taught it to myself as a teenager. I’m 67 now and I can still play it from memory. But I can’t play or remember the Beethoven Opus 109 sonata I learnt in 1983……

Thank you for your fresh and enlightening instructions. I would like to comment though on the "meaning" of quiet middle section: I think it depicts the wedding ceremony, where the priest (right hand) recites the ceremonial words which are then repeated by the bridegroom (left hand). And then its the brides turn (higher, B-major) to repeat . . .

I really liked this. I can't play the piano but Natalie and I have just come back from a cruise to Norway and heard this piece when we visited Grieg's house. Together with the pictures your video provided some lovely memories. Thanks Paul.

I have two observations to make. Somehow, I can't help but feel this piece inspired Richard Rodgers of Rodgers and Hammerstein, to write the March of the Siamese Children for the King and I. Not only do I think it inspired him, but Gene de Paul! Who is he? He wrote the music for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. In that musical, the Love Duet called Falling in Love seems to be almost a direct take from the "Nina & Edvard" love duet in the slow section of this piece! Give a listen to both and see if I'm not far off!

Wow, amazing tutorial :) Thank you so much for making this! :D I'm Norwegian and I love Grieg's work, but I never learned to play by sheets so I usually play by ear. But some songs are more difficult than others and this tutorial was extremely helpful ^^

Hello, there is a spot with left hand chords that are bigger than a full octave. My hand cannot possibly reach that far. Any ideas? Leave one note out? :(

rockinstrawberries you could play the e flat and the b flat together and then quickly the f. Or you could just play the e flat and b flat togther. Lucky for me i can strech it

I have such a hard time playing the part at 4:41 although I have been practicing for years - my hands are small and I keep hitting the wrong notes. Any advice? I can't use my 4th finger since it's only possible for me to reach an octave by using my pinky and my thumb. I want to learn it so bad!!

Same here, but take it from me, persistence pays off! Thought I could never play this piece, worked on it diligently for a year, and I can play the whole thing - not quite as fast as Paul - but at a good speed. Not perfected yet (nothing ever is), but continuing to work at it regularly is what gets you there. I can play the spot you mentioned, and it surprised the heck out of me when it finally happened! The best advice I ever got for playing was to always pick at least 1 piece to work on that you thought you'd never be able to play. Since I adopted that approach, I've played and surpassed my own self-imposed limits so many times I've lost count. Every time I achieve what I thought was impossible, it opens the door to something else I'd never have discovered before. Don't give up, Cecille! Don't ever give up! Don't put time limits on your learning, and be gentle on yourself. The brain and body need periods of rest and relaxation to grow and integrate all the new learning. Can't tell you how many times I've skipped a day or 2 practicing a piece, or even playing anything, then come back to it and blown through a particular section that was giving me trouble before. Your body is amazing and you are limited only by what you believe you can't achieve. Much love, and all my best in your endeavors!

Paul have you any advice for achieving the stretch of a 9th on the bass E Flat chord in the fast sections? I am learning this for the LCM Diploma exam? Do you think it is acceptable to play it as a broken chord? Great performance.
