You can see the ENTIRE PLAY for free on TH-cam! He was amazing and it is a totally alone for the entire one man show. I cannot believe an actor could go on night after night to do such a powerful one man show.
Wow ! Talk about a beloved actor ! You could feel the admiration from the audience throughout his speech. I actually looked him up on IMDb today because I was watching Match Game 74 and remembered him from Mad Men, but nothing else. He passed away last year 2022, 90 years young. RIP Robert !
The reason for the enthusiastic applause for Robert Morse might've been because his career and life had reached a low point, and the play he was nominated for was his comeback. After he had been in _How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,_ he struggled with alcoholism. At one point he was divorced and living in a one-bedroom apartment. And then the writer Jay Presson Allen asked him to be in a one-man play about Truman Capote, because she wanted a performer, not an actor. He went to AA meetings, got sober, and worked through abject terror to learn huge amounts of dialogue. His work paid off in a brilliant performance that you can view on this site.
Thanks. I thought that Robert Morse was out of the scene for while in the 70s and 80s. I didn't know the reason. My wife and I saw a Pittsurgh Public Theater production of Tru and that made me want to watch Robert in the role and I was able to see the whole thing in portions on You Tube. A remarkable performance. Robert was a constant presence growing up in the 60s and it is so great to see him win this (albeit a long time ago now) and be graceful about the whole thing. RIP Bobby.
What a generous man to be so full of kindness to those sitting there and everyone around watching this display of true genuine feelings for acting and performing. God Bless Robert Morse.
Remarkable actor and performer. Gracious, humble, lovely. Saw him in Los Angeles doing "Tru". Brilliant. He had such a joy for performing and it showed in his graceful speech. RIP Mr Morse.
I know right? Have been a fan of his for decades, and this acceptance speech shows what a gracious man he was. Had the good fortune of seeing him live on several occasions, both before this and after. A performer who more appreciated his fan base could NOT be found. Genuinely gracious. 💕RIP dear sir.
Had the JOY of seeing him live for a performance of Tru in San Francisco less than a year after this. Excellent role and performance and a performer VERY engaged with his audience. 💕💕💕
On TCM, I just watched a offbeat comedy movie Mr. Morse was in called "The Loved One." I laughed so hard until at one point, I had to stop. Great humor and an equally hilarious cast in 1965. I saw him in other shows as a child, I just liked his energy and comedic talent. Well deserving of all awards he has ever won! SIP, Mr. Robert Morse. 😢
It's fitting that he received the award from Matthew Broderick, who inherited Morse's Tony winning "How to Succeed" role (and himself won a Tony for it).

His early success overshadowed all that followed, even this, but everyone LOVED him and his God-given talent.

Wow, he really wanted to win that award. Never seen anyone so happy to win.
I saw him in "Tru" at the Kennedy Center and I loved it.

I know right? He's only started looking 'older' since his years on Mad Men. Happy Birthday to him today!

What a guy, giving a shout out to the bandleader/conductor.
The conductor was the conductor for his musical--when he was his 1st Tony
Riiiiiight? Not even for the show he just won the Tony for! For How To Succeed! Now THAT is respect.
Wow, I'm used to him from "Mad Men". He's probably close to 60 years old here and he looks like a kid!
They are all talented.
What a great guy. Great actor.
Abover Wonderful Actor!
The best things in life are free.
As Bert Cooper would say - Bravo!

MD was a disaster in that role.
So disastrous that he won a Tony Award for it?
I just want to say, Happy Birthday!
¡Grande Robert Morse!
