Snake Plant Re-potting (Sansevieria Cylindrica Starfish)

  • My Sansevieria Cylindrica Starfish was getting so big that it was time to repot my snake plant. I divided it into two and moved them to terra cotta pots.
    These are such hardy plants and fast growers too. They do well in low light and are drought tolerant. I got mine at Hirt's Gardens and I'm really happy with it.

    As a newbie, the best thing I've ever invested in was a moisture meter. I checked my plant yesterday because I thought it needed watering. It's cool here now in NYC. I checked in 3 places and only 1 of the places said it was a bit moist. I'm going to hold off watering and check again in another week. I've learned to check at least 4 spots before watering if the pot is big.

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. I still use a moisture meter before watering, especially large pots. Thanks for watching.

      Only watering when the soil is dry, if you are not sure the plant needs water or not, wait a few days to watering again.

  • @GardengalAAA
    @GardengalAAA ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have used coffee filters to the bottom of pots and then added potting soil (or my homemade mix), and without even watering the pot (I decided to replant it again the next day using a different potting mix), literally within 24 hours that coffee filter was getting mildewy. I do not recommend using coffee filters over drainage holes. You WILL have fungal issues in your pot.

I always use the Spice dry Cinnamon that you use when cooking over the cut main roots on my plants if I want to transplant right away this closes up the cut area so it will not rot the root. Hi Carmen! The Starfish is one of the next plants on my wish list. They are so pretty! What is the reason for putting them in dry soil instead of watering them? Disregard my water question you ended up answering toward the end. Nice video!

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching Judy! Yeah, the no watering is to protect it from possible root rot. Since I had a fresh cut and possible broken smaller roots, those can be susceptible to root rot if watered.

    Great video! Thanks!
    I use chopsticks for new plants that do not have established root system. Great pro for Chinese takeout. You can also use them to see if the plant needs to be watered and you do not have a moisture meter.
    I bought a Starfish last year. It had one leaf in the center and 2 smaller ones on the sides. It has not gotten bigger, but has a small pup that is still open and not grown closed. Any suggestions? Thanks!

      They do not grow back in that spot, but the plant will continue giving shoots throughout the pot or on the sides of each plant. But, if the arm is clearly dead then you can cut it off. I have done that and the plant did fine. Thanks for watching!

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Treat it just like a succulent. You want it in well draining soil and in a pot with a drainage hole. I water mine once a week in the Summer and about every 2 weeks in the Winter.

    Thanks! New to this plant. Assuming it was completely dried out, about how much water would you use for a plant/pot that size?

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wait until the soil is completely dry and then I water until the water drains out the bottom. So, it's essential you have chunky mix that drains well. I actually have a follow up to this plant on my next video, so stay tuned.

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer terra cotta, they can do well in glazed. You just have to watch your watering closer in glazed, because it evaporates slower than terra cotta. Hope this helps.

    Hi Carmen will u tell me how often do I water my senserveria starfish plant..thanks

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      During the Summer I water about 7-10 days. In the Winter I go every 2 weeks. But, always check the soil with a moisture meter or your finger. If is says moist or feels moist, wait a few more days.

    A friend gave me 2 single stem cutting from his starfish snake plant. Will they grow into a full plants or stay as single cuttings? Please let me know.

      I think it will eventually grow other stalks and form a starfish. The key first is getting those cuttings to root. It may take time to grow another stalk from it. How are you rooting it?

      I have them in a small wine glass of clean water with a ziplock bag over it.
      I bought one years ago that had one stem with two very small side shoots. They never grew. I think it had root rot when I bought it. I didn't catch it till it was too late.

    Carmen I need your advice. My snake plant is braided, but is making baby plants very rapidly. My question is, do I have to loosen the ties as the braided plant grow bigger?

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't necessarily have to. But, restraining the plant from it's natural growth pattern is not something I would do. I know many people actually unbraid it. Now the plant will have waves to the stalks that will not go away, but will grow up. Hope this helps.

  • @biancabeltran666

    Is it possible to replant these into a pot that doesn’t drain? I’ve seen people adding pebbles at the bottom to help with drainage... but does that really work?

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't recommend it. I don't have any plants in non-drainage pots. If you don't want to drill a hole in the pot, then use it as a catch-pot, meaning you would have the plant in a nursery pot and place that in the other pot. Then empty the water out of the catch-pot when watering. Hope this helps!

    • @biancabeltran666
      @biancabeltran666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carmen Whitehead thank you so much! That’s what I ended up doing. I left the plant in a draining nursery pot and just placed it inside a decorative pot!

    What kind of watering do you recommend if the temperature is about 35 to 40 degree Celsius

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be close to 100 in Fahrenheit. I tend to water every 10 days when it's that hot. Every 7 days if they are outside. Hope this helps.

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's extended release fertilizer from the grower. You can leave them in, it will help the plant.

    • @carmenwhitehead
      @carmenwhitehead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they are shrinking, it means it's not getting enough water. Water thoroughly (that the water is flowing out of drainage holes) when soil is dry. Hope this helps.😊🌱🐶
